I'm one of those that likes to mix miniatures from different games, meaning i of course have encountered the fact that far from all 28 mm is .... well, 28 mm.
So, i thought it could be good with a thread where one compares different "25 to 30 mm" miniatures, to get a grip on roughly what miniatures works where.
To begin with, a statement: Non-human monsters tend to work independent of the size they have, within the "28mm-range".
Now, the largest i have seen, that is rather 30 mm, is the 'Clix miniatures. The smallest, seems to be those from Descent and Doom.
Somewhere inbetween, one has Star Wars minis, Last night on Earth, and Games workshops. However, it might be good to range even those inbeteen ....
Any comments and/or contributions?

What exactly are you asking for?
In my gaming group, we use what minis work as the closest approximation of what we're going up against. If they're slightly too big for the grid, oh well. Everything from Heroclix (not many) to Rackham metals to the pile of other stuff we've accumulated over the years.

28mm can be broken down into several categories, including: 28mm Heroic, 28mm true-scale and 1:56. It's all about the same scale bracket, it's just that all companies have their own take on it. GW sticks to the heroic range, with oversized hands and heads. On the other side we have say, Hasslefree, who does lovely 28mm in true scale proportions for the most part. Here's an older comparison I did ages ago (click for larger view). The unpainted models are from Mantic Games, the others are, from left to right: Games Workshop Space Marine, Hasslefree MacKenzie, Bolt Action plastic WWII German Infantry, Infinity Line Kazak. They all use the same scale bracket, but they all differ in size and mass. If anything, the space marine looks pretty true scale when put next to these models. wink

Everything from Heroclix (not many) to Rackham metals to the pile of other stuff we've accumulated over the years. My intention is to, if possible, make a kind of list over ...... i just realized, that kind of list probably already exist .... ( Doh! xd sweatdrop ) Anyway, the idea was to make a list over several kinds of games' miniatures, so one would see which ones that is closest in size (and, perhaps, mass). Example question 1: "I want to make a kind of Military vs Superheroes scenario, i already have a couple of Heroclix working as Superheroes, but what military miniatures would work, sizewise?" Example question 2: "I'm adapting the Doom Boardgame rules for bigger skirmish-missions, but i don't have enough soldiers. What soldiers would fit?" Example question 3: "I was playing Last night on Earth, and started to think of what would happen if the National Guard were alerted to the situation. What minis would be best?" The list would answer, or help answering those questions .... But, as i just realised, such a list might already exist somewhere ...

I think I answered it fairly well, then. So long as you keep to a relatively similar scale, most folks won't care too much if you go outside of the standard realms of scale. If you're in a gaming group that cares about it that much outside of tournament play, there are other issues at hand.

Hm ... i am a bit of a perfectionist myself ... i have managed to use the smaller 'Clix minis along with GW and Void minis, though .... I felt the larger 'Clix'es were too big, though(a Spiderman that is a head higher than a Space Marine in Power Armor? ..... Uhhh, no, thanks). I wonder if you know if DUST minis is inbetween those in size, or if they are smaller than GW's?

Oh, so you had it in your CB! No wonder i didn't find it in this part of the guild .... Its minis seems to be same as, or a fraction smaller, than GW ..... (BTW, i think i might buy it next time i get the oppurtunity ... ) Thank you, by the way. biggrin

You have a point. That thread -should- be over here, and will be moved in a bit. That said, the Chatterbox is the most active subforum on here. That's always a good place to check in general for updates.

As a fresh new Dust player I'd rather have the topic in the Chatterbox for the time being. I will however move the Castle Ravenloft topic here. wink
