The conflict thesis is pretty much bunked yet it remains a large part of the Modern Western mythic identity. Why has it remained so popular? Why is evidence that contradicts this outdated myth over looked? What can be done on our part to dispell this myth from at least our local areas?

Science & Religion (2002), Gary Ferngren
While some historians had always regarded the Draper-White thesis as oversimplifying and distorting a complex relationship, in the late twentieth century it underwent a more systematic reevaluation. The result is the growing recognition among historians of science that the relationship of religion and science has been much more positive than is sometimes thought. Although popular images of controversy continue to exemplify the supposed hostility of Christianity to new scientific theories, studies have shown that Christianity has often nurtured and encouraged scientific endeavour, while at other times the two have co-existed without either tension or attempts at harmonization. If Galileo and the Scopes trial come to mind as examples of conflict, they were the exceptions rather than the rule

I think the biggest reason the conflict thesis still has weight in today's society's perceptions is because we still have the factor of the most extreme on both sides happen to be the loudest voices in the subject.

Those who say Science and Religion can't agree normally are the ones who seem to argue louder when their ideas are called into question. The largest majority of us, who feel like Science and Religion are more like partners are just standing back watching the drama unfold, feeling it is pointless to add to the scene, and sometimes being somewhat amused by it anyway. rolleyes

Yeah I feel that they are partners and that religion and culture are ways of making scientific truths relate-able. Part of the human psychological make up is that we distrust information that is presented that is opposed to our values and if information cannot be presented in a way that is relate-able to us then we disregard it. We are not reasonable creatures but rational creatures. We think most often like lawyers than we do professional scientists so we are naturally bias to information that helps "our case".

I guess I find it odd in general because these arguments have been going on since the 1800's from what I can tell and is like hardwired in our culture to the point where it is part of the Western Identity to accept this cage match between the two is a fact when historic and professional evidence suggests otherwise.
