♣ Moving day ♣ There's early, and then there's this. I think the only one who had fallen asleep last night was my brother. We had to get up before 4 in the morning to catch a train. Mom said it was a really nice trip, but I didn't really notice. I'd fallen asleep beside Finn and slept through most of the trip. But we were shuffled into a cab after we got off the train.
I mean, I knew moving would be a hassle, but this was kind of extreme. We're not just moving across town, or even to a new town. We're moving clear out of the country! At least while we were waiting for our flight, we finally grabbed breakfast. The diner at the airport was pretty nice, and the food wasn't too bad... for an airport I guess. Dad said it was horrible. Then again, dad thinks pretty much any food that mom didn't make is horrible, so that's beside the point. But he's the only one in the family that's traveled before. I was just glad to have food.
The flight was pretty long, but at least there were a couple movies to watch. The movies weren't really suited for younger kids, and Finn got really bored. But mom figured he would. She packed a deck of cards, so for most of the flight Mom, Fin, and I played old maid and other similar games until we landed. Cripes were we glad to finally stand up again. Though standing around for baggage claim was as thrilling as you might expect.
Picked up some treats at the airport to tide us over when we climbed into the cab to go to our new house. We were tired, exhausted really. But the sugar helped keep us going. Of course when we got to our new home, I must admit there was an adrenaline rush. It was a pretty impressive sight, much bigger than the house we had back home before. Dad was bringing our luggage in, Mom decided to call in for food, so that left Finn and I free to explore the house. It was so much bigger than we'd thought!
Dad had already been here on business, and set up the phones and things. And the master bedroom was obvious. (It was also obvious he'd been living here without mom.) There was a bedroom on the first floor down the hall from the master bedroom. Closets, bathroom, kitchen, diningroom- it wasn't that interesting really. But upstairs... First of all, there WAS an upstairs! Finn was really excited and wanted to claim the main room upstairs as his bedroom because it was so big. But after telling him how easy it would be for mom to come in and make him clean his room, he decided it was a bad idea.
The two bedrooms upstairs were both pretty fair in size, and Finn was excited by the windows... I think they're called bay windows? They have a neat little seat, you can sit in the window and just look out. Ok, I was pretty pleased with them too. Finn decided he didn't want the sun in his room in the mornings, so he took the room on the west side of the house, looking out over the street. I like the morning sun, so taking the east room was fine. And I could see the gorgeous yard out back. It was huge! It has to be at least 100 yards of just grass before you reach the trees that lined the property up to the fence. At least I think there's a fence back there. I can see fences along the side of the yard.
By the time Finn and I agreed on who got which room, dinner arrived. Mom called us down and I suppose what we had passed for food. It was pretty bad. Like some kind of fried, boiled mash with noodles and cheese.
I'll be glad when our furniture arrives. I hope it's soon. Right now I've got a sleeping bag on the floor and my pillow. But I should be grateful that I've got a roof overhead. I'll be enrolling in one of the school's here in King's City soon, so I should probably get to sleep. And Finn drug his sleeping bag in here, saying he didn't like the strange house. Thank you, God, for giving me an adorable little brother.

♣ Campus tour ♣ I knew I had stayed up too late last night. Or perhaps I was still exhausted from moving yesterday. I'd have liked to sleep more, but I had to go with my mother to the school I was being enrolled in. Place called Valley High. It sounded like the best fit for me, rather than the expensive academy for boys, or that school for kids people gave up on. First impressions were pretty good; the campus was clean at least. We met with the dean of admissions and, well, his reaction was a little off putting. Apparently he hasn't seen kids my age be as tall as I am. But his reaction was uncalled for. Asking my mother 'just what do you feed him to grow him so tall?' It was a little rude.
After finishing with the paperwork, reviewing transfers, and my old school records, I suppose I met his standards, and was invited to tour the school. We wandered around, the three of us, for a while. My mother was enjoying learning where everything was, and I guess it was nice having things pointed out. I think I'd have gotten lost my first day. But when the conversation turned to teachers, and the credentials and so forth, I asked if it would be ok for me to wander by myself a while. It's a good way to learn the layout. Get myself a little lost and find my way back. The dean thought that would be ok as long as I met him and my mother back at his office to discuss uniforms.
It was fun to explore on my own. The school was much bigger than the one I was at before. Now, I'm not sure if the other students were staring at me because I was a new person, not in uniform, or if it's because I seem to be taller than everyone, but I did get a lot of strange looks. It was a little unnerving until I found the gym. It was open so I stepped inside. I didn't know at the time that the basket ball team was practicing, but it was fun to watch.
One of the members noticed me after a while, and the practice stopped. I thought I was in trouble when they all looked at me. I mean, there was no one else watching the practice, and I was about to leave when one of the boys approached me. He asked if I was new to the school, and if I was lost. New yes, but I wasn't lost. I was surprised when he asked if I'd like to join them. I haven't played a serious game in years, so I didn't know how good I'd be, but the team seemed to insist, and so I joined in on a game.
It's more fun than I'd had in a while. After they explained the rules to me a bit, and designated teams (I'm glad they allowed me to be on the team to keep shirts on) we played for a bit, until a team reached 10 points. When the game ended, one of the guys asked me if I'd join the team when I started here. Does that normally happen? I'd never been asked to join a team back ... well, then again, no one knows me here. But I didn't want to just say no. I told them I'd think about it. I had to talk it over with my parents too. But I think I do want to join the team. It sounds like it would be fun, and the guys all seem nice.
I found my way back to the admissions office before my mother and the dean. But I wasn't waiting too long. Mom liked the school, I liked the school, now it was just a matter of the school uniforms. That was a bit of a problem. The school didn't actually have anything in my size, aside from the neck tie. Mom and I had to make a stop on the way home to get a uniform. I don't think it's quite the same style, but the colors are right. I hope it's ok.
And I mentioned to mom about the basketball team. She thinks it's a good idea. I'll meet people that way she said. Dad was supportive as long as it's something I want to do. So here's hoping it all works out.

♣ We met in the park ♣ It was kind of brisk today. But I went out to one of the near by parks anyways. I'd brought a book to read and just sit and enjoy the park. Of course, I wasn't the only one who wanted to enjoy the park, even though it was slightly chilled outside. But I did find an unoccupied bench to sit and read for a while.
I wasn't alone for long though. Well, ok, I had gotten through several chapters, but it didn't feel like I was there that long. A girl from school came my way and tried to chase me from the bench. I wasn't going to fight her over this, so I moved myself to a nearby tree. Of course the lass wasn't happy about that either. She didn't want me to listen to her play her violin, but I think she gave up after a while when she saw I wasn't really going to leave.
Some of her music blew away, and I couldn't just do nothing. I helped retrieve the sheets and we got to talking. We have a little in common. Both love to read, and have a fancy for music. She told me she knew who I was, but was baffled that I didn't know who she was. There's apparently gossip going around at my expense among the girls. Koorie, the lass I met, was not interested in gossip though. An admirable quality if I do say so myself. My disinterest in gossip is likely why I had no idea who she was.
We spoke for a while longer. She's actually pretty charming. I'd like to meet her again, maybe become friends. It'd be really nice to start meting more people. Sadly, it got chilly, and we parted ways.
