xxxx Hello and welcome, this is my Pokemon fanfiction. Well I say fanfiction, but I think it's more of my version of the Pokemon universe.
It follows Pokemon FireRed Version, but not to closely. I hope you enjoy it, and please give me you're feedback.

Chapter 1: The Dawn of Dusk

xxxx The midday sun sat high in the sky of Pallet Town. A stray stream of its golden light broke through the closed blinds of a dark bedroom. An older boy about sixteen was silent under the sheets of his bed. His alarm clock flashed twelve o'clock signifying that it had yet to be set. Or at least that it needed to be set again.
A light knock came from the door. After a few moments of silence the door cracked opened and his mother's head popped in.
xxxx "Dusk, honey, are you awake?" She asked softly. He stirred slightly but still remained silent. She walked over to the bed and sat on the side. her son wasn't facing her, instead choosing the wall to focus his glance at. She stroked his shoulder gently. "I know you're upset that he had to move honey, but it has been over a week. Don't you think it would be best to come out of your room, maybe go outside?" She was worried about her son, he had been very distant since one of his closest friends had moved away.
She sat there for a few moments before standing up and heading for the door. "If you change your mind I will be making lunch." She closed the door with a look of disappointment on her face and descended the stairs, heading for the kitchen.
Some time went by before the boy let out a deep sigh and slowly sat up in bed. His shaggy, charcoal hair was tangled and partially covered his eyes. He turned his body out of bed and sat on the edge, taking a moment, he brushed his hair back with his hand before standing up. He stretched briefly then continued to the door and out of the room.
As he arrived on the main floor of the house his mother turned to see him. "Oh, you decided to come down!" His mother's eyes were sparkling with excitement.
Having just finished making a lunch she brought a plate over to him as he sat down at the table. "So what are you going to do today? Maybe go out and meet up with Gary?" She asked smiling. "Or are you going to go back to bed?" she frowned realizing this was far more likely.
The boy began eating. But after several bites of his breakfast, he responded.

xxxx "I was thinking about taking a walk, maybe in Route 1 or something," he took a sip of the drink his mother had just brought him. The smile returned to his mother's face.

xxxx "I think that's a wonderful idea, you can go right after you finish eating." She then brought her own plate to the table and they ate a quiet lunch together.

After they finished their meal the boy went upstairs to change from his pajamas, while his mother began washing the dishes.

Several minutes later he returned downstairs. his outfit of choice was a red and white baseball cap, a black t-shirt, a red zipped-up vest, blue jeans, and a pair of black fingerless gloves. "You look nice dear" his mother said with a smile. He nodded and flashed his own smile back before walking to entrance of the house and putting on a pair of black lace-less shoes. "Dusk, please try to be home before dark" his mother requested.

xxxx "No need to worry, I won't be gone too long" Dusk answered with another smile. "See ya in a bit Mom!" he said opening the door and walking out.

Looking around he could see it was a beautiful day. The sun was shining, the sky was blue as could be, a soft breeze was blowing, but even so the smile faded from Dusk's face. He slowly made his way South. Past the houses, past Oak Lab, to the ocean's bank.

He glanced into the sparkling water and saw his reflection then sighed. He looked fine but it didn't reflect how he felt. Things haven't been the same since he moved away. I'm miserable and Gary's become a d**k Dusk thought. He stayed there a while, skipped a few rocks, laid down and watched the clouds roll by, before eventually turning around and heading back.

He passed by a few neighbors here and there, and greeted them casually. But never staying to chat.

Dusk arrived back at his house and reached for the door knob, when he heard his neighbor from across the road's door open. He bolted further up the path to avoid being seen by Gary Oak who was now heading the way Dusk had just come from.

"He must be heading to the Lab... I guess I'll go this way, not any harm in being out for a little longer. " Dusk muttered to himself. He leisurely made his way towards Route 1, and the close call with Gary hadn't improved his mood. As he arrived at the tree line between Pallet Town and Route 1 he heard a voice yell out from behind him.

xxxx "Hey!" it sounded a bit distant but Dusk still stopped in his tracks Crap! it isn't Gary right?! he thought as he remained frozen in place. "Wait!, don't go out!" the voice called again this time significantly closer. Wait, that isn't Gary... Who is it then? Dusk turned to see Professor Oak running towards him.

It didn't take long for the Professor to catch up to him, which surprised Dusk do to his age. When he did get to Dusk he hunched over to catch his breath. After a few moments he stood up and cleared his throat before speaking again.

"You can't go out there. It's unsafe, there are some nasty wild Pokemon that live there." Oak said still breathing a tad heavy.

xxxx "I think I can handle myself Professor. I've been out of Pallet before" Dusk responded with a nervous smile and scratching the back of his head.

xxxx "You can't be too careful! I think, you need your own Pokemon for protection." Oak nodded as he finished his statement.

xxxx "Yeah but-" Dusk was cut off.

xxxx "I know! Here, come with me!" Oak grabbed him by the wrist and started pulling. Dusk tried to resist at first but eventually conceded. Once Dusk stopped struggling, Oak let go of his wrist, fairly sure that he would continue to follow on his own.

It wasn't long before they arrived at Oak Lab. Oak opened the door a gestured for Dusk to follow.

Dusk glanced around at Oak Lab once he entered. There were several full book shelves across most of the walls, and even more books sat in piles all over. Many electronics including computers and other research devices were scattered throughout the building. Several aides in white lab coats were working hard and only looked up for a second to notice that the Professor and Dusk had entered before returning to their work.

Oak took Dusk to the back of the lab. There was a table with three Poke Balls on it and impatiently standing in the middle of the room was Gary Oak.

Damn it! Dusk thought. He glared at Oak I didn't want to talk to Gary! I was trying to avoid him!

xxxx "Gramps! I'm fed up with waiting!" Gary practically snarled at his grandfather. Dusk stopped his glare and turned his gaze to Gary, he couldn't believe this guy. Did he really just say that to his Grandpa?

xxxx "Gary? Let me think..." Oak said mockingly as he placed a hand on his chin, and feigning that he had forgetting the reason of his grandson's attendance. Gary gritted his teeth. "Oh, that's right, I told you to come!" Oak's mocking then changed to authority. "Just wait!" He said sternly

xxxx "Tch" Gary tutted in anger as he crossed his arms and averted his gaze to an attractive female aide.

Dusk let out a quiet snicker as Oak looked back at him.

xxxx "Here, Dusk. There are three Pokemon." Oak gestured towards the table with the Poke Balls on it. He glanced at the table before letting out a quick laugh.

"The Pokemon are of course held inside these Poke Balls. When I was young, I was a serious Pokemon Trainer. But now, in my old age, I have only these three left. You can have one. Go on, choose!" Oak was smiling brightly at Dusk who wasn't expecting in the least that the famous Pokemon Professor would offer to give him a Pokemon, let alone one of the only three that he had left.

Gary's attention snapped back to his grandfather from the aide.

xxxx "Hey! What the hell Gramps! Not fair! What about me?!" He exclaimed.

xxxx "Be patient, Gary. You can have one, too." Oak dismissed Gary calmly.

Dusk walked over to the table and looked over the Poke Balls. The first Poke Ball had a leaf sticker on the front of it signifying a grass Pokemon. The second, similarly, had a rain drop sticker signifying a water type. The third and final followed in suit by having a flame sticker signifying a fire type. Dusk looked back and forth between the three, he wasn't sure which he wanted. After a minute or two Gary was fed up with waiting.

xxxx "Hurry the hell up Dusk!" Gary yelled. Dusk glared at him before finally deciding on the Poke Ball with the flame sticker.

xxxx "Ah, Charmander is your choice. You should raise in patiently. Also a good fit in my opinion." Oak said with a smile at Dusk. "Why don't you introduce yourself?" Oak offered.

Dusk nodded in agreement before throwing the Poke Ball.

xxxx "Go, Charmander!" he said as the ball opened and out came an orange bipedal lizard with a flame burning brightly on its tale. It stood about two feet tall and immediately looked back at Dusk. It stared for a minute, blinked, then let out a satisfied cry, then it began to sniff and look around the lab.

xxxx "He is really quite energetic!" Oak remarked pleased that Charmander looked happy to have Dusk as its trainer.

"Why don't you give him a name?" Oak asked Dusk. I wasn't planning on keeping it... Dusk thought. He glanced at the Charmander, who in turn looked back at him and smiled.

xxxx "I guess I have no choice." Dusk murmured to himself. "It's male right?" Dusk asked Oak who gave a quick nod in response. Dusk thought for a few moments before speaking again. "How about... Zado?" He asked the room. The lizard looked up and responded.

xxxx "Sounds good boss!" He answered Dusk and gave a thumbs up. Dusk jolted for a moment, he knew Pokemon could talk but he hadn't seen it in person, at least not in a long time.

Gary then stormed up to the table muttering various grievances and obscenities before grabbing the Poke Ball with the rain drop sticker.

xxxx "I'll take this one, then!" Gary said with a smug smile. He then proceeded to release a bipedal turtle.

xxxx "Ah, Squirtle, interesting choice." Oak with a hint of irritation in his voice. It was a few inches shorter than Zado and had light sea green skin instead of the normal blue. It looked up at Gary acknowledging him as Its trainer. "Your name is Gamera" Gary said repeating his smug smile.

xxxx "Yes , Master" the Squirtle said bowing to him.

xxxx "Well, I guess I'm out of here." Dusk said trying to spend as little time around Gary as possible. "C'mon, Zado, let's head out." He said to the Charmander. Zado nodded and they both began to leave the lab side-by-side.

Dusk didn't get any more than seven steps away when he heard Gary call out to him.

xxxx "Hey, Dusk, why don't you show me what your crappy lizard can do, in a battle?" Gary jeered.

xxxx "No thanks, Gary" Dusk answered, attempting to leave again.

xxxx "Come on, I'll take you on! Or are you too scared?" Gary began taunting Dusk with various synonyms of coward.

xxxx "Fine!" Dusk yelled in annoyance as he spun around to face Gary. Heh I'll kick Dusk's a** in a Pokemon battle and Alexis will be so impressed with me she will ask me out! Gary thought as he glanced at the aide he had been ogling.

xxxx "Alright, Gamera, go get him!" Gary yelled. His Squirtle lunged forward and narrowed his eyes at Dusk and Zado.

xxxx "Let's beat them down!" Dusk said to Zado who nodded in agreement and jumped forward to face off against Gamera.

xxxx "Oh, for Pete's sake..." Oak began. "Dusk, you've never had a Pokemon battle before, have you?" Oak asked. Dusk hated to admit it, but he hadn't ever really battled. Gary began laughing now remember the disadvantage.

xxxx "I forgot you hadn't battled before, you're going down loser!" Gary continued to laugh.

xxxx "It's quite simple Dusk" Oak began. "Just try and take down your opponent's Pokemon before they can take down yours. Be somewhat careful and have a good enough strategy and things will be fine. But you will learn from experience, go ahead and battle. Oh and by the way, the attacks Zado knows right now are scratch and growl." Oak finished and Dusk looked back at Gary.

xxxx "Let's do this! Zado, use scratch!" Dusk yelled. Zado rushed forward, and struck out at Gamera with his claws glowing white.
