I love these kind of names! mrgreen Like Ushiwakamaru and Oniwakamaru (I think this was Musashi-bou Benkei's youmyou). These apparently are the names that the princes of medieval Japan retained until a special ceremony was held in their honor where they would be given the thrown of emporer and , usually, a two-kanji name based on the names of their families. Did I depict this correctly? sweatdrop

Do any of you know any youmyou names of any renowned emporers of medieval Japan???

::fall-over:: eek Damn that's pretty obscure subject to be interested in.. until you mentioned it I never knew that! o_O

I know geisha changed their names... in the older times when they were adopted by the okiya, they changed their name entirely, and then got a new name when they became maiko...

Oh and when women or men became nuns/priests, they changed their names to something all-kanji... like in Oh-Oku (a drama) the dowager of the shogun was a nun, her name was "Keishoin". Very unfeminine-sounding if you ask me. sweatdrop

I suppose you could think of the royal ceremony as a closely related equivalent of a Barmitzvah. smile

Eheheh you are so enthusiastic about this... can't leave you alone in here!

I guess if I did live in a royal mideval Japanese setting.. I'd really rather be a lady of a ruling family, rather than an imperial princess or something. Don't ask why, I just don't think being in the emperors family would be beneficial, since they were puppets since.. almost forever.

Anyway just something short and cute (which most old Japanese female names were..). O-den, or Fujiko, Yasuko... or something romantic sounding like Yuugao or Asagao. Or Aoi. (Yes, I like the names in Genji.)

Blah.

I came here to learn, So... I really wouldn't know how to change my name properly.
What would you suggest for a common name in my case?

I would want something that sounds nice (Genji is an awsome book!) and means something good l

I have a cool name, that becomes even cooler, when I convert it into informal version of Russian.

Here are some examples:
Alexander = Alyosha/Sasha
Peter = Petya
Michael = Misha

Catherine = Katya
Julie = Julya
...

Kenzu
