Presumably, part of why I had been invited into the guild is that I engage in long discussions and debates at times and have quite a bit of experience with presenting my opinions. So here, I will maintain a shop of sorts for anyone looking for assistance in expressing themselves or getting a point across, or, alternatively, finding the holes in a particularly difficult reply.

Part of the fun of debates is that the one that is correct is not necessarily the one winning the debate. When you are arguing from a strong position, yet find yourself coming across difficult questions, or being ganged up on, it can be discouraging and make you want to wash your hands of the deal. I'm here to play back up if you need it.

Others are of course welcome to provide the same services as well here. I don't need a monopoly, and the more people we have participating, the more valuable this service might be for the community.

So what might you post in this thread looking for help with?

1. Post editing. This would include scratching out typos, and potentially rewording things to have a better flow, make more sense.
2. Research assistance. Need to figure something out to make a point that you know is true, but can't quite find a source that fits the bill, ask and I'll take a look and see what I can turn up. In most cases, I have a knack for finding something.
3. Back up in a discussion. If you feel ganged up on in a thread and want someone to step in I'd be happy to do so, provided that I either already share your opinion, or can be convinced of it.

Please be aware that this list is subject to change, and that this entire thread will remain in a developmental cycle for a while, as I figure out how to best serve the community.

I would like to point out that debates often form around people's personal opinions. No opinion is "right" or "wrong". It's more of what opinion is more acceptable and feasible.

I would like to point out that debates often form around people's personal opinions. No opinion is "right" or "wrong". It's more of what opinion is more acceptable and feasible.

This is true to a certain extent. Fact of the matter is, some opinions are better than others, and should be defended as such. An opinion is usually formed based upon facts an evidence of some sort. You observe something, come to some conclusions, and form an opinion on the matter.

Let me draw an example of this. Once upon a time, people thought the earth was flat. Their experience and knowledge of the time suggested this to be true. Then a small minority found otherwise. They were hard pressed in presenting their opinion however, against an overwhelming number of those that disagreed. If they were not steadfast in presenting their case, the advance of exploration and expansion of science would have been slower.

It is a good idea to fight for an opinion you hold, even if in the end you are wrong. If you were wrong, you learned something, or at least had your mind opened to alternative possibilities. If you were right, you are helping to make the better place, a bit at a time through the spread of knowledge.

There are other examples I could draw on this subject, but will refrain unless you feel its necessary.

I do feel the need to point out that the function of this thread is not to assist people in arguing about issues of personal taste, such as which music is better. My focus, and I hope the focus of those that will make use of this service, is in the defense of fact and evidence against wild speculation and outright absurdities. Debate and discussion that can make a real difference in the world, even if it's just a piece at a time.

I should perhaps note that I'm not in the business of helping people with their homework. Just because I engage on college level work of my own accord doesn't mean that I'm willing to help people get their degrees. Of course, such edits will come in time as the thread has more time to develop, assuming of course, that it does. This guild is still dead. A few active posters does not a lively guild make.

Oh where art thou, our valiant leader? I would hope that you would be the one putting us all to shame in terms of post count. ;P
