I want to have a BJD of my character. So far it is really hard to find the right face shape, expression and hairstyles. Do I have to settle for what I can find? Do I have to have it custom made? I have no idea how to go about doing this.

You might have to do a lot of looking to find just the right thing. Expressions can be dramatically changed just by getting the right face-up, which is where you might have to go custom.
Don't give up, keep looking at different companies and dolls.
