eek *blink blink*
I so was not expecting to find a typewriter thread on Gaia of all places. Normally Gaians are so...techy. (I know, shoot me for stereotyping...ha, stereotyping. Bad pun. Not intended.)
I have a 1945 Royal KMM that I use primarily for letters, typecasts, and writing a novel. It's in the best condition of my collection. I just brought back a 1930s Remington #3 Portable from my parent's house where I've been storing it. Hoping to get it more functional (it works, but not well) so that I will have a slightly smaller, lighter, and quieter machine to work on. The other members of my collection include a 1918 Oliver #9 (nonfuctional at present) and a 1953 Royalite that I'm trying to sell. Would love to get my hands on one of the colorful portable from the 1920s, since those are my favorites. I love the pre-war machines. I also want to get a victorian-era typewriter. While the manuals are my first love, I kind of want an IBM selectric so that I can change out the fonts. I would love a script or gothic machine.

I have an IBM Selectric, so about as lamely modern as you can get. :b I didn't use it for a few years and now the keys keep getting jammed and mixed up. I tried cleaning the dust out with compressed air, and that helped some, but I need to try some more intense oil cleaning or replace something. /: I'm afraid to take things out or buy new parts since I don't know what I'm doing. I should take it to a shop but it's incredibly heavy. I'd like to buy a manual (and/or lighter) one anyway....

My Selectric II's name is Bluebell and she is my most favorite electric machine. heart I bought her new ribbon and 10 type balls and I love her. I've got a regular Selectric as well, but haven't tried it out yet.
My collection currently stands at 33 machines.

I just bought my first two typewriters this week! I'm so excited! I found both of them while on vacation in the USA, at an antiques mall in Missoula, Montana.
One of them is a plastic 1967 Olivetti Studio 45 (grey, sadly, not the spunky turquoise color it also came in) that I picked up for $25 and the other is a metal 1963 Royal Mercury I got for $22. Both are manuals in perfect working condition that had been kicking around the shop for some time. I'm so pleased! Both of them need a little cleaning up - is it safe to use a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean them?
