My band is Going to Hawaii in december and we're trying to raise money for it. Though, we can't really think of a way to do so.

We've done bake sales, which don't sell much, and car washes are pretty competitive in this small town between us band students and them atheletes from both our high schools.

So... what have you guys done to raise money?

Candy bars sell REALLY well if your state allows you to fundraise with them (I know there's certain limitations in California, which destroyed a lot of my old middle school's fundraisers).

Ad sales do a great job, generally. Take a picture of the band and put your performance schedule of the year on it, then have advertisers purchase ad space on the poster (generally a business card). Then, when you have the poster printed off and such, you post them all around the school and around local businesses.

We also have a TNT fireworks booth during the summer.

The parents also manage some other large fundraisers, such as golf carts for local state college games, an insurance partnership, bingo night, etc.

As for smaller fundraisers, See's Candy is good (but generally around Christmas and Easter only). Candles can be good sellers too. Things like Tupperware you could try.

Another idea: COLLECT WATER BOTTLES and recycle them for money. I did this fundraiser on my own last spring and during marching season this year. I generated like $200, and could've generated more if I were more persistent! During the hot months especially, kids bring water bottles to school all the time and end up throwing them away. Put collection bins all over school (and check with custodians to make sure they don't recycle the bottles themselves!) or at least in your band room, and take them back once a week or so. It gets kind-of nasty when people throw trash in the bins (you'd be surprised what people think is recyclable), but in the end, it's money you didn't have before.

Um, we also get money for having our parents work the football concessions and my high schools co-hosts a DCI show in June with our feeder elementary bands' director.

Maybe you guys could set up a donation website (like a paypal) where people can just go and donate, or add a page to your band's website saying where to write a check to for donation. (Plus, donations to band programs are often tax-deductible, so that helps out the donators too!) If Aunt Mary or Uncle Bob want to help out your band, but they live on the other side of the country, they could send you a donation to help offset costs. Maybe for any concerts you perform, ask for a donation at the door (but not require it) to help offset costs.

Good luck! :]

~COOKIE DOUGH!!!! everyone likes cookie dough. find one where they have the pre-formed ones too. since you're band, theres a lot of families that are probably really busy...and those pre-formed ones take like 10 minutes razz
~discount cards. 2 options i've heard of here. we have a "panther card" that we sell for $10 and it has like discounts for places all over town that are unlimited for a year (then they gotta buy a new one haha) or what our middles school does is alike a coupon book which is basically the same thing, except theres i think more but they're only good once.
~big fundraisers. these take mostly parent organization, with students working. we have a gift, art, and wine auction where people and companies donate stuff or baskets and theres a silent and live auction. and all the band sections all do a project or wreath or basket or something. we also do a crab feed combined with the middle school band and we all work as waiters/waitresses/cooks/etc. we also sell random stuff there too. oh and we do a classic car show, which started with the band director before the last band director liking old cars and asking around town if people would pay $25 to show their car on the HS football field, and they did! i think i heard there were about 50 cars at the first one. now, like 10 years later, we have over 400 cars and we had to move to the bottom of 1st street (where theres this park-type area) and even now theres not that much more room and people from all over the place come now
~we also work Cal games (cal berkley football games) in the concession stands. idk if you live close enough to a college or if they do that kind of thing, but berkley lets different organizations work the concession stands. (too bad we can't do that next year because they're redoing the field...)
