Looking up from his position under a lone pine tree, Mercutio could tell the weather wasn't going to be all the great. The clouds were beginning to darken, and already the chill in the air had begun to get worse. This was the perfect time to pull off a prank. The mischievous, toothy grin that seemed characteristic to the immature wolf began to spread across his face, but it was gone just as quickly and replaced with a sort of painful grimace.

The thought of being busted in the act by his prim and proper cousin was more than enough to kill any sort of buzz his premature planning could create, and the thought depressed him. It had been so long since he'd been able to pull off a prank without Banquo's interference, and it was about time to do something about that.

Grimacing once more, the Gamma looked down at the scar across his abdomen and let out a low growl, one more prone to the wolf's downslated mood than to any possible distaste to his cousin, whom he cherished more than he cared to put into words.

The cold, promising breeze tickled said cousin out of a light nap. Uncurling and stretching out, Banquo inhaled, tasting the weather. It was cold out. He turned his eyes to the sky, watching the formations of the clouds. A storm seemed to be brewing. The perfect time to check up on his family members and make sure they're safe and have good shelter. He yawned, shook his head, and then set his nose to the ground to chase that familiar trail.

Mercutio was probably up to no good. That was normal. Banquo trotted off after his cousin's scent, keeping one ear on the sky and its gurglings. He hoped it wouldn't rain. He didn't mind snow too much, but rain hadn't been fun since he was a pup. When he'd been walking for a while, he stopped to throw out a brief howl. Hey cuz? Where are ya? I'm looking for ya. Without waiting for a reply, he continued to seek Mercutio, moving a touch faster.

Jerking his head up into the air at the sound of his cousin's howl, Mercutio's mood nearly flatlined. Mumbling audibly, the wolf grimaced before throwing back his head and releasing a howl of his own.

"Stop reading my mind!

And yeah i'm here, just a little further in."

The message was clear, if not exactly descriptive, but he was confident that the more responsible and mature wolf would be able to pick up on his scent relatively quickly.

As he waited, Mercutio lay his head back down on his paws and listened as the wind swept across his muzzle. Wonderful, weather. This was what he loved, even if he would be soaking wet come evening time, he would also be able to roll around in the mud! The thought of mud under his paws helped to heighten the male's spirits just a bit.

As he lay there, daydreaming of his soon to come mud romping, a wonderful thought flickered past the grown pup's mind. He was going to SO scare the fur off the pups back at home. He just had to play the waiting game first.

Banquo put his nose to the ground, determined to find his cousin before it started to rain. Mercutio probably had no plans to find shelter; what if he got soaking wet and got horribly sick as a result? Still running, he turned his head up to look at the sky and smell the wind. It could be a big one. What if his energetic cousin slipped into a river made more powerful by the rain and drowned? Here he had to admit he was being a little paranoid, but storms put him on edge, made him expect something bad to happen. Bad things always happened when it stormed, if you asked Banquo.

Following the second howl, at last his almost-brother came into sight. “There you are,” he sighed, visibly relieved but still quite tense. “Have you smelled the weather lately? You should find some shelter. We should both find some shelter.”

Abruptly shaking his head in refusal, as was pretty normal when it came to taking an order from his higher ranking cousin. Mercutio followed up with a nose to the air, taking in the fresh scent of soon to come rain.

"Come on - you know me better than that. This is the BEST weather ever, why would I possibly want to find shelter?!"

The male lowered his head just long enough to meet the beta's eyes before continuing.

"You go on and find some shelter, i'll be fine. Besides - aren't there some young pups you haven't badgered yet? I'm sure they'd love to be advised by the mighty Banquo.."

The jealousy in his voice was so obvious, you'd have to be slow to have missed it, but flinching at his own words, Mercutio quickly jumped on the guilt wagon and came up with a follow up --

"Will you trust me if I promise to come find you if it gets too bad?"

Banquo’s face fell a little, clearly wounded by the jibe. He was only trying to look out for his cousin because he cared about him. “I wasn’t trying to imply anything,” he said, sounding more defensive than he meant to. Ears flattening against his skull, he looked at the sky again, pointedly avoiding Mercutio’s gaze. “It could be serious. I don’t want anybody to get hurt.” Still, if Mercutio promised to get to shelter if it got bad enough…

The ranked wolf hesitated, conflicted. Part of loving someone, he believed, was keeping them safe. Another part was trusting them. And Banquo wanted to trust his cousin, really he did – but trust had led to becoming the victim of a prank so many times, he couldn’t shake the need to prove he wasn’t gullible. “What are you planning on doing that’s so important it can’t wait for a storm to blow over, anyways?” He asked, suddenly suspicious.

Without a moments hesitation the lower ranked male blurted out his answer.

"Mud. Everyone who's anyone knows the best mud is only available when the rain first falls. After that it just gets really sticky and won't come out of your fur."

Mercutio smiled a toothy grin, and looked straight at his cousin. Naturally his comment had only been a half truth, but in most cases a half truth was all he needed to get past his cousin's watchful eye.

A loud rumble passed across the skies and vibrated the Earth beneath their feet, a sure single that.

"It won't be long now. You should go check up on the pack. I'll be fine, just gonna do some choice mud rolling. You'll see, while you're back there keeping track of everyone else, i'll be right here rolling away. Besides -"

With a pause Mercutio's toothy grin returned and he finished his sentence.

"When have I EVER lied to you?"

Whether or not he was enjoying their conversation, Banquo couldn't help that Mercutio's toothy grin was absolutely infectious and made him smile, just a little, even as he was trying to be the mature, responsible one. "Oh no, never. You would never lie to me," he said jokingly, tail giving a little wiggle, tension leaving his shoulders ever so slightly.

He paused and looked at Mercutio, eyeing him up and down as if measuring him up and deciding if he was a match for the oncoming storm. Finally he huffed and said, "Just don't get hit by lightning, okay? I'd never be able to forgive myself - or you, for that matter."
