It was dark out, but the bright yellow stripes on her uniform seemed to glow. She eyed the bright stripe along the edge of her glove and frowned. Maybe she should look into a costume change in the near future, or at least some kind of alternative stealth outfit. For now though hopefully there was enough foliage on the trees she was hiding in to provide sufficient cover.

Recks Ruthor had escaped – again – and one of the teachers had asked her to go ‘retrieve him’, like he was some kind of puppy. Really, he was more of a nuisance than an actual threat, but the fact that they sent her off on this mission alone made her smile. Maybe they didn’t think she was completely useless. She wondered, briefly, if they would have still sent her out after him if he had some kind of super power. Probably not, she decided, she still did not have a good enough control over her boosting abilities. At least with Recks there wasn’t any worry of that.

Before heading out she had called her reporter... friend, Daphne Ray. Danica still was not sure how she felt about the self-published reporter, but she seemed sincere enough during their brief dealings, and besides, she was an excellent source of information. The blond seemed to have an endless supply of informants. When “Conduit” had called her and asked about Recks Ruthur, the older woman had practically given her a play by play of the man’s recent activity. Apparently, Recks wasn’t very stealthy either.

Every night for the past week Recks had come through this park. No one seemed to know why, only that he did. Maybe he was just trying to keep up some kind of exercise routine. Whatever the reason, Dani planned on taking advantage of it. So she had found herself a nice thickly leaved tree that she could hide in and get a good view of the park around her. It was almost midnight, she had been waiting there for three hours and she was starting to wonder if Recks would be coming at all, when she spotted his shiny bald head jogging down the path.

How perfect! If he kept along the trail he was currently following, he would pass almost right under her tree. Could she possibly be this lucky? She waited patiently for him to get closer, poised to jump. As he neared the base of her tree she sprang! Recks looked up at the sudden sound of rustling branches and yelped when he noticed the miniature masked vigilante lunging towards him. He scampered to get out of the way, but he needn’t have run so quickly.

In her eagerness to catch the famous villain Dani had not considered just how long she had been sitting up in that tree. The moment she shot up from her crouched position her legs crapped up and she toppled over. “Eh-? Ehhh!” She tried desperately to catch one of the branches on the way down, and managed to slow her fall just enough that she merely winded herself when she landed on her back on the grassy floor.

Between the adrenaline messing with her head and the aching pain in her legs it took her a moment to get her bearings. She tipped her head back as far as she could to try and see where Recks had gone, just in time to catch a glimpse of him rounding a corner and out of sight. “Not this again!” She grumbled.

Dani ducked and weaved between trees as she attempted to keep up pace with the quickly escaping Ruthor. Where was he going anyway? As they traveled closer and closer to the edge of the park she began to hear the faint roar of lots of people talking in the distance. Oh no, she thought to herself and resisted the urge to smack her forehead with the palm of her hand, the Night Market.

Sure enough, no sooner had she burst out of the tree cover that bordered that park than did she see the tents and the sparkly lights of the Tasean style night market that ran every year for a few months. Of course, Ruthor would find the one place nearby that would be this crowded and his hard to navigate without causing a scene!

JACK

Rex Ruther wasn't so much faster than him than he was good at camouflaging in the background. That was one good thing that came out of looking like an average Crantellian man, Graeme supposed, instead of wearing a too-colorful outfit like most villains Jack read about in the history textbooks, who looked as if they strolled straight out of an artisan's dustbin.

Apparently, though, using the word 'villain' in this situation was very contestable, but nuisance or no Jack was giving chase with as much effort as he could muster. The only real trail he could follow was that thing Rex had took, the embarrassing but important thing that he kept tucked safely away in a plain cardboard box.

That box was important. It was so important that, as Graeme shifted through the crowd and tailed Rex's dirty old dress shirt, he reminisced about how quickly he'd marched through Sidekick Academy's deathtrap and, if he wasn't busy with heroic affairs, he'd give himself a pat on the back for the jump he made to hop onto Rex's boat (well, to the edge of it, for 30 minutes, while Rex awkwardly sailed them to shore while Graeme had a morning star in his hands).

It was so damn important that Graeme had tried to politely ask Rex to hand over the box, and they could both be well on their way, as the rookie could not get himself to give a damn about capturing a man that had escaped a hundred times over. But Ruther had run off as soon as they'd reach the pier, and as an hour passed, Graeme realized how damnably impossible this so-called mission actually was.

He was close, though, and Jack ceased his yelling as soon as he'd caught whiff of Rex Ruther once again, his hands gripped tightly around that cardboard box of his. Jack reached out with his arm to grab the n** of Rex Ruther's slack rim, and when he was able to pull the villain closer, he let out a triumphant shout.

"Ahah! Got you now, you--"

Aside from the fact that the man he'd thought was Rex Ruther was, in fact, a now-bewildered cargo man with a cardboard box too big to be his, Jack was pushed aside by the fray until he tripped backwards into a metal pole.
