So, my band has a cocnert coming up pretty soon, Friday the 13th actually, and the music we are playing is very easy for me. I keep getting thrown onto lower parts(because two players are douches, but we won't go into that. Yet.) Unfortunately, lower clari parts are super easy for me, especially on easy songs to begin with.

Recently, i felt the urge to ask for a solo at the concert. Not one in our pieces; a one person on stage, solo and ensemble type solo. However, i couldn't think of what to play. I would have to ask, but I wanted to have an idea first.

Well, today, I was playing my grandmother's paino. I was playing Scarborough fair and greensleeves seperately. Thats when a thought came to em; how would they sound together?

Also recently, i've been trying to teach myself to compose music. I've written a few decent clarinet solos(mostly today) with piano accompaniements and thought of taking on a bigger project; a scarborough fair/greenseeves clarinet duet. As I was working on it, I remembered the beautiful bass clef part on the piano music. Thats when I decided to add in a third clarinet. So I now have a 3 Bb clarient trio piece. Its in progress, but wont take long to finish.

Now, the reason I posted this here.

Should I find tw other clarients to play this with and ask my director if we can perform it at the cocnert?

Its nto difficult. The rythyms are the most challenging part, and it wouldn't be hard for me to teach two otehrs. I have at least one in mind; Manny. He has few issues, but I think if I put him on the third, straigt eigth ntoe part, it should be fine.

The issues:
-My director. She is evil. Purely. She could possibly just say no.
-Who can play the second part?
-Each concert has a theme, thanks to our director. I don't think folk sogs fit into Movies.

Also, back to the other top clarients. I had an idea to invite them to join me. If the three of us were to play it, we would be the talk fo the cocnert. When you put us each on seperate parts, we overpower the entire sucky clarinet section and can soudn like one instrument playing three parts. The rest of our section sucks, but the three of us can sound really good.
isuues with this plan:
-They, for unknown reasons, ahte me. Al I've ever done is be there friend, at least try to.(I was sl, they gave me hell.)

So, I'm worried that if I ask them to play it with me, they will laugh in my face or not care about it. Like, i'm worried they will just put it to the back of their heads and forget about it. And then when it comes to practice, I'm worried they will say it sucks(definately not what i need for my confidence and selfesteem.theyve already racked that kidn of low) I don't mind constructive criticism from them(change this note to this so it doesnt clash, this sounds better piano not forte, hold this longer, etc.) What I can't handle is stuff like "this part sucks, We should take outt hese measures" or "I dont lke this note so im going to rise or lwoer it an octave or two." Which I'm almsot positive they will try.

If I'm going to do this, I want to do it well.

Three questions now:
-Should I even ask for a solo at all?
-Should I ask to play this trio I arranged or find a different song?
-And should I invite the two other top claris to join me?

(I know its a long psot. Thansk for bearing with it lol)

Also, if you would liek to hear my arrangemet to better help, and you have a noteflight account, clcik here

Well from what I read from this you probably want to avoid the other two clarinets.

Doing the solo would most likely challenge you but most likely bring alot of bitchy comments from the two.

If all the other clarinets are terrible try doing the trio with trumpets or tenor sax's though they won't be the same sound they all read the same since they are Bb though the range may be harder for tenor sax I think

or find a community band and join. Thats what I did to stop being bored with the music we were playing in band. The music I play in community band is all much hardy than what we normally play in band and actually gives me a reason to practice!

Well, unfortunately my area doesn't have a community band. I've been looking and asking around, but no.

AndI forgot to mention the whole response thing like you said. One fo the reasons keeping me from askingfor a solo is the likely response i would get from them.

It can't hurt to try to ask for a solo or to see if those two want to do a trio. I listened to the piece you linked though and some of the song just didn't fit well (even though some fit really well, too. ^^ ). I know you said you weren't finished with it, but maybe you should get that piece functioning correctly before you consider playing it together for an audience. Or you could try to find another piece maybe you'd like better. I say get the music together, then mention it to the director and maybe play it for them, so they get an idea about it.

If you really think the other two clarinets are going to be that jerky about it, I wouldn't ask them... If you do, you'd have to tell them "We're not changing anything in this. If you don't want to play it like this, then fine." and don't let them change your piece. They either do it your way or take the highway.

If you're really sure about your solo, I would say just do it alone. The band director would probably be the worst part to get past, but you could give it a go. Couldnt hurt? ( I'm just a freshie, so you might want to ignore me sweatdrop )

Tanks for the advice.

and yeah, I know some fo it is kinda off lol. I'm not at my house right now because my gpa died and I've been staying at my gmas house until the funeral(was today), and a lot of family is here with little kids, so I haven't had the chance to hear it well and fix clashign notes or off rythyms. I'm also trying to redo msot if not all of the melded scarborogugh fair/greensleeves part and the ending because it doesn't quite sound right. I'ma ctually working on that at this moment lol.

Lol, you ahve good advice. And being a freshie has nothing to dow tih whether people shoudlt ake your advice or not; sometimes freshies have the best ideas.
