so, i finally decided i'm going to UC davis this fall, and i want to join their volunteer marching band (excuse me, the band-uh!. and 200 people even though its volunteer lol) except i haven't played clarinet in 4 years (8th grade) because i've been doing colorguard, which davis doesn't have. plus, i'm from a band that competes in parade comps, and we only march on the field when we do a crappy "here, learn this in 2 hours before the game" homecoming halftime show....do i have reason to be a bit...apprehensive about it? or is it not that hard to learn to do real halftime shows and whatnot? even with an instrument i've haven't played in forever?

What I've learned from hearing about other people's experiences is that no one really cares whether you can play in college marching band or not. They mostly want you there to have fun! And since they don't compete, it's not as much pressure to play well. Definitely brush up on your clarinet skills over the summer, though, so you can play through the music. :]
From what I understand, when learning field shows for college bands (if you have a bunch of little field shows throughout the year) the drill is usually pretty simplistic (no crazy drum corps stuff!). Memorizing any kind of drill isn't terribly difficult either, and if you can memorize your guard parade routines, you can memorize drill. It's really just going from one spot to another in a certain number of counts that usually line up with a musical phrase.
I don't have any personal insight yet, though (aside from learning drill, which I've done in my HS band). I'm gonna be a college freshman this fall, too! (But at Fresno State!)

I would just practice some before you go there it'll most likely come back to you fairly quickly
marching wise I doubt you'll be the only one going through the hole first field show thing they will probably do it easy for a start and it's not hard.
in other news because I really want to put this somewhere and I'm to lazy to start a new topic, the college I want go to has a super awesome marching band I hope I make it in, they only do one show a year but they are fairly difficult shows and from what I can tell they have awesome music to go with. Their music program seams to be really good I hope it stays that way

(then again, i'm on the other side of the country, so what do i know? haha) but seriously. extra stuff is good. (for example: girl in my grade, took a lot of the same AP/honors classes, took harder ones than i did, probably got better grades in math (i was straight A except for calculus lol don't mean to brag or anything, just making a point!) and we applied for the same school in the same major. i got in, she got waitlisted. i was in band. biggrin

I'm also thinking about doing a sport next year just to say I did one, I'm thinking I might do Tennis or Ultimate Frisbee seams like fun, surprisingly. I'm not trying to brag if that's what it came off as, sorry. But ya you were correct about the whole extracurricular stuff and I hope some one else see's it and decides to be a little more active after school

(and you're not bragging. cuz neither was i! yay!) lol well good luck!!!

College marching band is fun because it's not nearly as demanding as high school band. That is, unless you go to a university in which the band is the biggest thing there. I've been at Western Carolina University for 3 years now and I'm a member of the band there and it's pretty awesome. www.prideofthemountains.com
