I'm going to be completely honest, I've never once been bothered by guys about my gender. You know who usually start with me? Girls. gonk Some of them enjoy acting like a special snowflake and get bitchy at girls who also enjoy video games because, I don't know, maybe they feel threatened for whatever-the-hell-reason. And they usually like to go on and on about not being like other girls that are gamers.
Some. Not all by any means. But those are the types I tend to encounter.

While not completely related to this topic, this is somewhat correlated. This discussion makes me remember the fact that I have somewhat of a pet peeve with the drastic difference between male characters and female ones in video games. First of all, there are the two extreme stereotypes: males always are super buff and so bad-a** that they just can't keep their shirts on; females are always so helpless that they need a male character's help to breathe properly (and are usually wearing next to nothing and very busty). Of course, this doesn't happen in every game, and this stereotype (while a bit ridiculous) isn't entirely what bothers me. Specifically, I'm going to have to narrow it down to any genre where a character's personality is largely explored or utilized. Something like a fighting game doesn't count, where the personality of the character is only mentioned en passant. What I'm going to have to get at (and I know it will be difficult and thus, my explanation will be a bit vague) is that there is a definitive "male" persona and a very fine line between that and a "female" persona, though it's usually a subtle nuance. These nuances are based on the extreme stereotypes, which is where it sort of bothers me. For example, if I go ahead and label two characters who are from different games but of the same genre: Nathan Drake and Lara Croft (we'll take Lara from Tomb Raider Anniversary through to Underworld). You can already see it, can't you? These two characters could essentially be swapped in their respective games, but you can't treat them the same way in your mind. One may argue "because their personalities differ", and that's true, but what bothers me about it is the fact that their personalities differ solely because of their genders; as aforementioned, based on the stereotypes. A male character cannot be reserved, graceful, refined or have finesse without being emo or flamboyantly gay. A female character cannot be strong, brash or conspicuously confident without coming off inarticulate or being thought of as impossible just because she's female (though there are a few female characters that are this way; double standards, yay). Bayonetta retains almost all of Dante's cocky and trash-talking attitude. They're almost the same person. However, can you envision a Dante-like character that physically looks like Bayonetta? I personally like the more slender and long-limbed look of Bayonetta over Dante's obviously buff appearance. But male characters just can't look like that. They have to be buff and have lots of muscle. (And don't say that this is just because I'm a guy and Bayonetta's a woman. That argument doesn't work on me; I'm about as straight as a circle.) This is not to say that male characters shouldn't have muscle or be strong. There just isn't a happy medium for people like me. A woman's physique usually fits into this category and I often try to picture male characters with about as much muscle as the females. On the other hand, when a woman does have a lot of muscle, it's weird and/or unnatural to people. Yay, more double standards. Some of my friends won't pick up a game just because the main character is female. I feel that that's crap. I don't really care if the main character is male or female; what usually happens instead is I agree with or become attached to the character's personality. More often than not, this happens with female personas over male ones, and it's usually just because of the stereotype. I've had people say "those kinds of characters happen in anime all the time!" but I don't watch anime. I'm a gamer.
What can one do, though, aside from just complain about it? Ah well. Maybe someday I will hit the lottery and be able to design a character myself in some random video game in the future. He will probably be the least liked character in the history of video games, but at least I will like him. Sorry for the gigantic post. [/rant]

A faint smile I just want everyone's honest opinion on female gamers, and how they are treated. Any suggestions as to what to do to deal with ignorant jerks? I myself am a female gamer, I understand your frustatrion. Yeah they get treated sometimes like s**t but if we are going to talk the talk we better back up our game to it. Girls can play whatever the hell they want when they want just as much as boys can, should'nt be judged on it otherwise. And as to those ignorant jerks? Well if they can't handle getting their asses kick by a bunch of girls or if making sexual comments and not being a gentlemen about certain things then they sure as hell ain't no man, but a little punk.

I hate the girl gamers who act all "Oh, look at me I'm a girl and I play call of duty. I'm so awesome." Goodness, shut up. It doesn't matter what gender you are, only that you can kick some a** on the game.
I've encountered quite a few of these girls on different sites and once in public. In public it was worse cause I almost punched the girl. The oh look at me started and I told her to shut up cause I just killed her in halo.
I hate the guys as well who are all "Oh my god your a girl and you play thats so amazing."
Seriously guys you've never seen a girl play a video game in this day and age. So sad and pathetic.
Venting, sorry. My pet peeves with gamers. sweatdrop 3nodding

I think some girl gamers with the 'special snowflake syndrome' use it as a pick up technique, making it not so much about the gaming. I'm only saying this because I've seen it in person and it pisses me off because guys fall all over this s**t like girl gamers are magical unicorns that only appear once every decade.
But, back to the OP; being a female, I have never given much thought to how people perceived me as a gamer. I just couldn't give a pocket full of shits if I had any to spare. I've been playing since I was 5, and it has become a part of who I am. I won't feel ashamed or as if I can't do just a well as guys because of my gender. It can be annoying and disrespectful dealing with some of these idiots, but then make them eat those words by whooping that a** like the wrath of God and then sit back and bask in their stunned silence (or their pathetic whining of 'beginner's luck' or 'cheating'). Makes me rofl every time.
