I'm attempting a new mid game style where I make VERY minimal lings, making them only for instant reinforcements after a push to put the nail in the coffin, or if I HAVE to get units immediately.

What are some things you can dump minerals into effectively as zerg?

Queens and spine crawlers are alright, but I'm wonder if anyone else has more ideas for a better mineral dump. I find roaches aren't bad for the mineral dump either, but they take so much into your population and eat up some of the gas I'd rather use on higher tech units, like hydras, broodlords or ultras.

the best mineral dump is another expansion, or taking gas faster. if your mineral:gas ratio is too skewed in favor of minerals (and you didn't plan on it/aren't about to transition into a lot of extractors, ie spanishiwa no-gas style), it basically means you took your extractors too late and have had too many drones on minerals for no reason (because you can't use them).

so yeah, just pump out drones... the "style" of minimal units is more or less key to zerg success, at least until a lot higher of a level... the more drones you can get away with early on, the better your midgame will be. this of course relies on you being IMPECCABLE with your scouting; blindly massing drones is no less cheesy than blinding 6pooling smile it just takes longer to win/lose from.

that said, spines are AWESOME defense, 3 spines + good scouting will let you survive 4gates and the like; roaches are awesome vs terran and vs zerg, vs protoss ling/bling is totally where it's at imo.

hydras ... suck. make them minimally to defend vs stargate builds, imo razz they are just so immobile and hard to use, they have TINY timing windows for offensive play compounded by the fact that they move very slow off of creep. basically the only time i'd recommend hydras are to a) defend vs stargate openers then transition into ling/bling/infestor; or b) after scenario "a" you see the toss is taking a third and need to deny it somehow.

keep in mind, while spines are awesome, they are very costly. 150 minerals + opportunity cost from larva, drone death/mining time (lost from the rest of the game, essentially).
