This thread is in memory of my beloved dog Harley. She passed away April 16th, 2011. She was 8 years old. I will post some piccus and some stories about her. As well as quest forms and pretties that I've already obtained.

Rest in Peace Harley. I hope you are happy chasing all the critters you can, going for all the walks and bye bye rides you want, and getting all the treats you can ask for. I'll miss you. <3

I apologize for the big piccus but I don't have the means to size them down at the current moment

Harley was a complete surprise. We were always told that we would never ever ever have any animals other than fish. After me and my brother became homeschooled though, I guess they changed their minds. They walked in one afternoon with a water bowl and a wiggling little puppy.

"Whose dog are we dogsitting for?" was the first thing out of my mouth. Because you know, it had always been the rule that we'd never have any animals. Lo and behold they told us that she was ours. Our very own puppy! Needless to say, I didn't make it to youth group that night. I wanted to stay home with the puppy! I went with my then step-father to the store to go pick out a collar for her. I picked out a bright pink collar, because it would look good against her black fur.

We get home and we all ponder names. Eventually we came up with the name Harley, since my brother's name was Davidson, and mom and then step-father always wanted a Harley Davidson. Bad I know, but the name Harley stuck. For an Australian Shepherd/Great Dane mix, she never got to be even remotely close to the height of a dane. I think my mother was kind of thankful for that. But she was a very very playful puppy. I taught her all her tricks. Sit, lay down, shake, high five, high ten, and even to bark when I told her to say please. Mom wasn't happy about that one.

There was one time she got stuck behind the washer because the neighbors started mowing their yard and the sound of the lawn mower scared her to death. It was an interesting process trying to get her out from behind there. She was also afraid of thunder, and the vacuum, and our own lawn mowers. If she ever got loose while outside, hoboy, it was a pain in the buttocks to catch her again. She was super super fast.

Not quite when we first got her, she was probably about almost a year old in this piccu. But she loved posing for the camera.

I owe my life to Harley. About a year after we got her, mom and then step-father ran into problems[mom found out he'd been cheating on her], and so they separated. They did the separation thing at first because mom wanted to try to work things out with him[he was my brother's biological father]. And at the time, my brother was still getting therapy to work past various social and emotional and communication issues he had due to his Asperger's.

Mom started to go out everyday, leaving me to babysit my brother every single days. The days his father was suppose to come get him and never showed just sent him into emotional breakdowns. So I got to deal with them every couple of weeks. My brother became very very violent during the separation and would never listen to me. Every time I told him that he needed to calm down or behave, he would come at me. Granted, he's younger than me but he is a lot stronger than I am. Harley would come barreling out from where ever she was at to distract him long enough for me to get out of whatever corner he had me pinned in and get away.

One time my brother had a couple of friends over. They were misbehaving so I told these friends that they needed to go home. My brother threw one hell of a fit and told me I had no right in telling his friends what to do. Him and the two other boys came after me. Him with a piece of board with nails sticking out of it. Harley kept them at bay until I could get myself safely away, and then I called her into the bedroom with me and barricaded ourselves inside until my mother got home. If it had not been for her getting between them and me, I could have easily died that day. So I owe her my life.

She also became protective of my son after we moved in with my mother back in Nov. While she was wary of a young child, she never nipped him, and only gave warning snaps if he startled her while she was sleeping, but never threatened him. There was one day she was laying next to him while he was playing on the floor and one of mom's friends reached down to quickly to pick him up, and Harley reacted thinking that this friend was going to harm Michael and snapped at my mom's friend. She was a very loyal and very protective dog. I owe her everything.

She happened to yawn at just the right moment. I promise you she wasn't trying to bite my head off. xD

Due to my ex step-father's greediness and just being a plain ole b*****d during the divorce, he refused to sign the paperwork needed for mom to refinance the house. So the house went into foreclosure and we ended up living up on my grandparent's property[farmland galore] in campers. Harley loved it up there. She could run freely about and chase whatever she wanted without getting into trouble. Every day the mail truck would drive by, she'd be chasing it all the way to the mailbox, and all the way down the road until the property line ended. We have no idea how she knew where the property line was, but she somehow knew it.

There was one day that I woke up to Harley just barking away non-stop. I go outside and see mom out there. Come to find out, Harley had treed a raccoon. She's not a coon dog. She just never liked anything that didn't belong on the property. Unfortunately, she didn't understand the concept that if she left the coon alone and let it out of the tree it could eventually leave the property. After about two hours of keeping it in the tree she wandered away, and I watched the coon start to come down the tree. The second it's toe touched the ground she was barreling back for the tree barking her head off. Her and the coon got into a small bit of a fight but the coon quickly went back up the tree for another two hours before we managed to drag her inside to finally let the poor coon get out of the tree and leave. She got a small scratch under her eye from the coon, and after that the fur grew in white instead of black in that spot.

Her barking at the coon in the tree. You can't really see the coon to well but it's about the middle of the tree amongst all the branches

There was another time when I was up in the woods down at my Grandma's house, and I had taken her with me. I had stopped to sit on the big rock piles that are in the woods, but she had continued to go further up the hill. I didn't think much of it. She never went far. About five minutes goes by and I hear this Kerthud! Crash! Rustle! nose. I turn and this big ole buck comes running down the hill and leaps off the very same rock I was sitting on. It was literally only two feet away from me. I just sat there and stared. Not more than 30 seconds later, there goes Harley flying past me chasing the buck. I started chasing after her, but her and the buck ran a lot quicker than I did and I soon lost her. She came back about three hours later as happy as could be. Obviously she never caught the buck, but she chased it off the property and she was proud of herself for it.

Me holding her and showing people that she wasn't nearly as big as they thought she was just because she's part Great Dane

We moved from Grandma's property to the town we now live in, back on Sept. 1st of 2006. Harley missed being able to run around outside but she adjusted. We did have a fenced in backyard but it really wasn't that big of a yard. She did love to just lay in the sunlight whenever it was nice out. Usually where we found her most days was lounging around just soaking up the sun.

During the winter time she loved loved loved to play in the snow. Chase any snowballs I threw. Try to catch any snow I kicked up in the air. She just loved being in it. There would be times she would run outside and just start rolling around in it. She was really funny when it came to snow. It was like her best friend.

Front chest coloring: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v521/PipPip18848/IMG_0249.jpg
Rest of her: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v521/PipPip18848/IMG_0185.jpg
Better piccu of her chest/front area: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v521/PipPip18848/IMG_0132.jpg

If you need anymore piccus I've got them but she's mostly black with just the white coloring. She does have a small smidgen of white fur under one eye, not that you can see it in any piccus but it happened after a small fight with a raccoon and the small scratch grew back as white fur instead of black. But that's not really needed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v521/PipPip18848/IMG_0127.jpg She looks like a bunny jumping in this piccu. I loved how her tail curled up like that. <3 [more for so you can see she's all black but it's still a cute piccu]

*Snuggus tightly* I know how hard it is to lose a pet: one of my family's cats ran away when I was about five, we sold the other when I was six (Dad's allergies + moving away = kitty looking for a new home). In addition, the cat my grandparents had when I was little passed away from old age around age 15 when I was in middle school. DDDDDDDD8

Since the start of high school, I've found the joy of having a dog that my family loves to bits. If our Ruby (small chihuahua-terrier-greyhound type mix) died, I'd feel horrible, too. D8 We got her when she was a puppy spring of my freshman year (she was half a year old), and she's had issues with arthritis, the legacy of an old accident long before we got her where someone must've dropped her or SOMETHING, and she landed on her spine near the hips. DDDDDDD8 We've worked hard making sure arthritis doesn't take our puppy, but winter of '09-'10, it almost did. DDDDDDDD8

BTW, Harley looks a lot like Ruby, and parts of the story resonated. I was at dance class the night we finally brought her home from the local shelter that had taken in Ruby and her chihuahua-terrier mother from another shelter in another part of the state. Her mother had this hole ripped in her right upper lip, clearly gotten from trying to protect her baby from SOMETHING. My dad and my sister had been joking about getting a dog (not likely, since Mom was a cat person, Dad was a dog person, Dad had allergies to cats, and Mom didn't really have any experience with dogs), but when I joined the conversation, having at times no sense of humor, it has generally been blamed on me that we found and brought home our puppy. She and her mother, we think lived for a while as someone's pets, but some adult men screwed up, and the two ended up on the streets. We met them around the time they were spayed, and I'm glad to note Ruby's tummy hair has grown back since then. xd

Our parents forbade us from giving her a Tolkienian name. We cheated, and named her after one of Sam Gamgee's daughters, anyway. She's our squirrel-hunter, our quiet, shy, fast, agile, affectionate puppy who eats only when she's really hungry and enjoys her daily walkies each morning. She keeps Mom company when Dad's busy and now that my sister and I are away at college. She's never gotten the "give back" concept of fetch, but the game of keep away keeps us active. xd

But yeah, when I got home, I didn't want to go to bed, even though I had school in the morning; early in the morning, in fact. I wanted our shy one to get used to me as her big sister, and...well...the rest is history. She's our little sister of the "pack," Mom's baby, Dad's companion for movies and afternoons on the couch. So this hits close to home. D8 *Will tell you the minute she has custom slots available so you can get Harley in DD*
