It's also because it's basically become a world based on appearance now. It's a place where if you don't look good then you're a freak, weirdo, whatever. It's very sad that a 7-year old had to get surgery due to bullies at school. In my own opinion, she was far too young for it to be even considered as a solution to bullying, and often when surgery is a choice out of bullying, it just leads the a new reason to be bullied.
And this girl wasn't even being bullied. It seems that her mother was worried that she might be bullied so she decided plastic surgery was an acceptable "preventative measure". What the crap.

Oh, but she was teased! rolleyes How many kids get teased everyday for something stupid... Try having two brothers, maybe. Then she'll know what teasing and bullying is.
Hehe, I feel like "teased" is even an exaggeration. One of my best childhood friends had ears that stuck out. Her family commented on it, even her mom called her "Monkey", but it wasn't mean-spirited. It wasn't, "Oh my god, what is wrong with your child! What a freak!" It was endearing. And she was aware of them, but not in a self-conscious way. They were special. I feel like this is the same situation, except this little girl's mom is, to be blunt, an idiot.

My mom was called "eagle beak" by her brother whos nose was sharper than hers O.o And phideaux by her dad, but she did get really annoyed by that. *shrugs* We all call my grandmother "Moo" (no clue where it came from), but she's always been Moo. It's life
Well yeah, no one really likes being teased. But we learn as children not to take it so seriously. Or at least we should. I guess another method is rushing to the plastic surgeon and cutting up your kid's ears. :3

And making them feel like they will never be good enough unless they are full pf plastic and stitch scars.

I think that is so stupid they mentioned in the video that childrens' ears are bigger in proportion to their heads than adults so her ears may have grown out to look fine when she was older WITHOUT SURGERY. Wow it is sad looking at our society, we have become more focused on outer beauty than the inner beauty that most people can posses.

It wasn't about the ears being too big, they did it because she had a lop-sided ear. I really don't see any problem with this - it sounds like a simple procedure and if they can fix it easily, why not?

No, it was also because they stood out. The cuff ear was just another reason. Like they said, how many other people have prominant ears? A lot...

I still don't see a real reason not to do it. It's a simple, harmless procedure and it will make her more confident. The cuff ear was an actual deformity, so that's a good "excuse" to fix the ears. If they're fixing the cuff ear, why not fix the angle of the ears, while they're at it?

Yea, but like pretty much everyone here has said, she's seven and hasn't even began to stop growing. Her ears could lay back with age and thee curl may come out. We don't know what we're going to look like when we stop growing, so why chance making it worse? Plus, the mother is encouraging her to use drastic measures to change her appearance. What if she gets harassed for being pale? Will her mom let her go to a tanning salon at 7? It's just not setting a good example on how to deal with life and yourself.

A seven year old has not even stopped growing yet. You have no idea at seven what you will even look like at 15 much less for the rest of your life. This trend is CRAZY. It is the mother projecting fears onto her child. This is messed up.

I don't think this has developed in to a trend yet. I think it is just this case and a few others that are similar. Like in the video, it shows what that one actress looked like when she was little, but her ears are fine now...

it might be. didja hear about the woman who was giving her eight year old daughter botox injections to reduce 'smile lines'? i also heard that she (the 8 year old) was getting bikini waxes as well (it's like, yeah, puberty's hitting at younger ages, but how many 8 year olds need to have their nether regions waxed for any reason?)
but the mom i guess was one of those pagaent moms, and said all of them do it, and pissed off other pagaent moms, who don't believe those measures are ever neccessary (because what 8 year old has serious smile lines?)

I cannot stand those pageant moms... What are they really teaching their daughters? Girls have enough self esteem issues, but they're making them worse... They really can be classified as extremists. And I think I already said this, but the mom is trying to live through her daughter. It happens so many times with older parents who are overweight/obese. They force their children to be something so that way they can have all the fame and glory.

yeah. you're right. the moms are living vicariously through their daughters, and it's the daughter's responsibility to make up for the hopes and dreams mommy didn't accomplish

Yup, yup. It's really sad, in a pathetic sense. I don't understand how people can hate their lives, but not do something about it. But instead they brainwash the people they can to make themselves happy since they're too lazy to get off their butts and do it themselves. But those pageants consume so much time! I just don't see the point in showing off a child like that... They're five, not twenty five... I really wonder how they interact with other kids. Do they even interact with other kids their age?
