Welcome to my garden! It is a mixed flower and food garden in USDA zone 9.

I know the photos are showing up a little bit on the giant side, but I'm unsure how to fix this. Think of it as life-size photos xd .

Please excuse my weeds and volunteers. "We mowz what growz."

Enjoy!

Edit: I have added some updates for 2012! I also figured out how to shrink the older photos. The same trick for some bizarre reason did not work with the newer ones, so again, I apologize for the giant photos.

My Amaryllis and Lily Collection 2012

User Image
Minerva buds already coming up, Feb. 29, 2012

*I added two amaryllis over the fall: Solomon and Bolero. Solomon bloomed in the fall. Bolero sent up only one bloom stalk so far. It should have opened last week, but I think it must have bugs because the booms didn't open. I might get lucky and see another bloom stalk on it this year, but it hasn't properly acclimated yet so probably not.

User Image
Crinum Lily
I jokingly call this my Resurrection Lily. These very cool leaves come up, and then later in the season the leaves dry out and die with no warning. The plant looks dead, and the bulb seems hollow. I always think the dern thing is dead and I have almost thrown it out several times. Every year it sprouts back out and surprises me. Someday maybe it will surprise me with some blooms. I have had it for three and a half years now.

My Amaryllis Collection 2011

Lemon-Lime Amaryllis (mini hybrid)

User Image
Lemon-Lime Amaryllis, Blushing (mini hybrid)
In full-sun, lemon-lime amaryllis take on a pinkish blush as they age. The picture is of the same blossom above, take 2 days later.

User Image
Exotic Star Amaryllis (hybrid)
I absolutely love this variety. The petals are wine and green stripped. I only have one of this bulb, so all of the pics are of the same plant.

User Image
Exotic Star Amaryllis (hybrid)

User Image
Minerva Amaryllis (hybrid)
This is one of the most common red and white varieties. While I have been taking care of these, they actually belong to my sister who no longer has a yard. wink Maybe she'll give me one of the babies when she wants them back.

User Image
Minerva and Exotic Star Amaryllis (hybrids)
Minerva (left) and Exotic Star (right) and some volunteer Arizona ash (now deceased), volunteer "talla" (which I have been informed is "tallow"), and volunteer tapioca (which still needs to be moved.)

User Image
Mambo Amaryllis (hybrid)
A close relative of Minerva, which is a lot shorter and has more white in the blooms.

User Image
Mambo Amaryllis (hybrid)
Photo taken 2 days after the previous one.

User Image
Fairytale Amaryllis (hybrid)
Another beautiful red and white variety. There are some buds in the back which belong to a fourth red and white variety.

User Image
Red and White Amaryllis (hybrid) (unknown variety)
Closely resembles the variety Lambada, but not closely enough. Very large and beautiful blooms.

User Image
Red and White Amaryllis
Another shot of the mystery variety.

2011 Roses

User Image
Red Climbing Rose
This was a Cherry Parfait rose, but this winter everything above the graft froze. Fortunately, the hybrid had been grafted on this very lovely red climber which decided to live on and bloom in it's place. I haven't tried to determine the exact variety, but it is a floribunda climber.

Flowering Trees

User Image
Tulip Magnolia (AKA Japanese or Saucer Magnolia)

User Image
Little Gem Magnolia
Full of buds! Little Gem magnolias are dwarfs which resemble southern magnolias but only reach 12 feet max height. Ours is about 8 feet.

Yet to bloom:

Cacti and Succulents 2012

User Image
Aloe Vera
The pup that survived the freeze last year has grown to a nice size and now has a pup of its own. biggrin

User Image
Cacti and Succulent Mix
I added several little cacti and succulents over the fall. They still need to be repotted, but I haven't decided exactly where I want them. wink

User Image
Succulents and Cactus Mix
Here are the rest of the newbies!

Cacti and Succulents 2011

User Image
Aloe Vera
The main plant froze this year, but one of the larger pups survived! The pup looks better alone in the pot anyway. xd

Color! 2012

User Image
Sugar Daddy Petunias
I filled my hanging baskets with these for the fall/ winter. The blooms are huge! I am super-happy that I have been able to save some of the seeds this year so I can grow them again next season.

Color! 2011

User Image
Spiderwort (Tradescantia)
We have this very cool wildflower growing all over the yard. It is an indicator plant, which means it changes color based on the conditions it is grown in. Changes in pH and exposure to radiation can make the blueish flowers turn pink!

User Image
Daffodills
Absolutely refusing to bloom and grow.

User Image
Dwf. Variegated Ginger
Died back to the ground this winter, but is finally sprouting out. (Time to clear away the dead groth, *sigh)

Fruits and Veggies 2012

User Image
Satsuma Orange
Absolutely covered in buds.

User Image
Satsuma Orange
Another picture of some of the buds. Each flower has the potential to grow into a fruit. The largest amount of fruits I saw in a cluster last year was four; Maybe I'll get a cluster of five this year...

User Image
Meyer Lemon Tree
The new growth on the tree is purple. Very showy! I am, of course, ecstatic that the tree has lots of new growth and seems to have recovered well from the freeze and drought that it survived last year. This is a very large tree- about 12 feet tall.

User Image
Meyer Lemon Tree
The flower buds are purple, but the flowers are white when they open. The flowers on the lemon tree are significantly larger than the flowers on the satsuma, however since the satsuma blooms in clusters the satsuma has more flowers.

Fruits and Veggies 2011

User Image
Tapioca
It's a volunteer in a bad place. We started out with one, but they come up like mad from the seeds. They are all over the yard, but not for long.

User Image
Satsuma Orange
The satsuma orange bloomed heavily this year. One flower was still showing this morning when I thought to photograph it.

User Image
Satsuma Oranges
There are tons of tiny fruits already set on the satsuma orange! These will be ripe in the fall.

nice biggrin wish I could grow citrus here. I have a lemon tree but whenever it fruits, the fruit is very small and usually gets frostbite before it ripens completely. Still edible though, but w/e.

The ability to grow citrus comes at a price, though. It is way to hot here to grow apples and cherries.

Oh, Dragon, what beautiful amaryllis! I can understand your desire for some cowboy justice where that thief is concerned. How lucky to have a grafting stock rose that you actually like! I can't tell you how many times I've hoped that the rootstock of a frozen rose would be something wonderful, but ended up digging it up! I'd love to grow the citrus, but you're right about the heat----I just need a greenhouse for citrus, avocadoes, and olives. The magnolias are beautiful!!! Thank you for posting these pictures---it's still too cold and wet for much outside here.

Very nice, quiet a variety! I love all your flowers. We're hoping to get some flowers out eventually as well. My mothers favorites are pansy's and sweet pea's so I'm hoping to get some of those for her when I have the money! I've never tried growing Amaryllis and just have a sneaky feeling it won't work well for me if I try.
