Chapter 1.11 - I Pose a Question I smiled at the Dwarven merchant prince. He looked back with disgust. His companion returned with the ink and paper. He was even so kind as to bring a wax stick. I thanked him and, after several seconds, handed him the completed slip. “That should suffice. I’m sure that you have a runner and guard ready for such an occasion?” “Do I look like I have a runner and guard ready?” he cried. “I am a merchant, and though I am from a wealthy family, I do not have the money to hire even a single extra hand. I was blessed to receive the cart and horse. There is only myself, and my body guard.”

Chapter 1.12 - The Done Deal I cut him off as he took a breath, obviously intent on continuing his rant. “Perfect! Not afraid to do the dirty work then. Good for you! Well, you best be off now. The bank will be closing soon, and I need to find a place to store my wares for the night” He stared at me in shock. Quietly, his guard came over and led him away. I saw the slight grin and the silent nod he sent my way. I listened to them as they slowly made their way through the crowd. “What of the Cart? I…” “He bought it. Now let’s go.” “Our supplies…” “We can buy more. Now hurry.” “But…” “If we do not get to the bank before it closes we will be sleeping on empty stomachs out in the cold. Now come on.”

Chapter 1.13 - Suprised by Someone Special I missed the princeling’s response, for at that moment I felt a slender hand slip into mine. “That was entirely un-necessary, you know.” Her voice was quiet and wistful. The Elven words seemed to roll from her tongue. “Non-sense,” I replied, turning and pulling her close. Her leafy garb was never the same. Every time I saw her it was completely different, and yet it never really seemed to change. Just like her. My precious Lyrianna.

Chapter 2.1 - My Bad Ok, I have to admit. I lied, sorry Graven. Lyrianna was, and always will be, my greatest companion. She was a half-elf ranger. We had been through thick and thin together and, over time, grew to be more then just sword siblings.

Chapter 2.2 - The Ballad of Lyrianna Raised in the Elven city of Tau’niece of the southern forests, Lyrianna grew up as a middle class troublemaker. The Elves were, to say the least, “un-amused” with her rambunctiousness and she had few friends because of it. This led her to spend more and more time outside the settlement. There, in the woods of Tau’telous, Lyrianna learned the ways of the forest. It there she learned to hunt and fish; how to tie snares and make traps. She learned stealth as she stalked her pray; and concealment as she became the prey. It was not long before she had mastered her skills and applied to enter the ranks of the rangers, where she was accepted with open arms. She was yet sixteen.

Chapter 2.3 - How I Met Your Mother Seven years later, I decided to “join” her. Though Rangers rarely worked with outsiders, there was something different about the relationship between her and I. Be it by chance or the work of others, we were constantly crossing paths. I, the roaming adventurer, would go to attack the camp of an Orc scouting party. She, the shadow of the forest, would somehow meet me there, matching my efforts arrow for arrow and blade for blade. This began to happen so frequently they eventually made us a team. As part of the agreement, and to cover their backs, I was given an honorary membership. I could have cared less. By that time we were something of a couple, and I had little in the way of appreciation for such things.

Chapter 2.4 - The Problem, and Its Solution As the years passed, we traveled most all of the known world, several portions of the unknown world, and on occasion ventured deep into the under realm. After a decade of adventures, the Rangers Guild was fed up. My methods, while effective, were quite unorthodox for their tastes, so they gave us two options. Either I left, or she left. Since being a ranger was her life’s dream, we decided to temporarily part ways. We saw each other often, however. Sometimes I would find her. Other times, she would find me. We were never apart for more then a few months This had been one of the longest periods we had yet to endure, I was more then happy to see her.

The embrace lasted several seconds, both of us being content simply with each other’s presence. Slowly, Lyrianna pulled away and gave me a stern glare. “Do you have to do that every time you enter a city?” I had to chuckle. She must have been tracking me to have known about that. Over the last few weeks, I had been getting bored. The area was unusually peaceful. While I did run into a few thieves along the road to Gol’tava, there was no-where near as much malicious activity as there should have been for the area. The “grand entrances” were simply my way of having fun. I thought about using that as an excuse to explain my behavior, and decided against it. Lyrianna, as much as she loved me, was not one for excuses. At that exact moment another excuse popped into my head. This one was much better then the last and was sure convince her of the necessity of such events. “I haven’t been here for fifteen years” I grinned and looked her in the eyes. They were unimpressed. Slowly, as the seconds passed, I my grin began to mellow and then turn into a frown. The eyes were still unimpressed. “Really?” She asked, her voice matching her glare. I was forced to look away in a bashful shame. “The last city we visited together, just five years ago. Explain that.” She continued. I had begun to fiddle with the items on the cart, desperately looking through the remaining gear to find something that might appease her enough to forgo the impending lecture. I saw a flint and striker set and reached to pick it up, a wasted action sadly enough. Apparently she was well aware of what I as doing and decided to have none of it. With swift movements she slapped my hand away and, anticipating my flinch, knocked me backwards over the tip of her boot. I landed hard behind the stall.

I landed hard with a loud, "wumpf," and groaned. It didn't hurt so much as wound my pride. She continued to glare at me as I got up, further chagrined by the snickers of the merchants close enough to see, and waited until I had sheepishly brushed myself off before speaking again.
"We talked about this. You can't keep throwing your inheritance away on petty performances and pissing contests." Her glower felt like a slap, but I knew she was right. "You know that was a pointless waste. Do you really think kicking around that little dwarf and his minder was worth the small fortune you wasted on trinkets?"
I wanted to interject there, but that glare stopped me. While the wares were defiantly not trinkets, she was right about the sum I had paid. Excepting a few minor items there was little use for the items I had purchased, and saying anything to defend my frivolous spending would only make things worse. With a sigh, she visibly deflated and once more leaned in to wrap her arm around me.
"So what will you do with this batch? We have to take it somewhere. Leaving it here will incur a fine and I will NOT tolerate you wasting even more coin on this mess." I sighed as I felt her begin to tense up once more.
"Another donation to the adventurer's guild, I guess." She relaxed a bit, and shook her head before moving to start packing up the cart. I joined her and within short order, it was neatly packed and hitched.
"I'd be surprised if they didn't have a wing named after you by this point. The equipment and supplies you have donated over the years must amount to quite the fortune by now." There was an edge to the comment, but it wasn't worth another row.
As we walked I began to regret my display. She was right, as usual, and my pride had once again cost me. As we walked, Lyrianna spoke with the cart horse I had purchased with the wares. It was small and rather amicable, as it seemed rather ambivalent to the whole ordeal, and its hooves set a steady rhythm as we lead it out of the marketplace and through darkening streets of the city.
