The sky pirate's one visible eye drooped under the weight of exhaustion and what could only be described as the single most pressing boredom he'd ever experienced. When he'd told Geoff of his great plan to ground themselves and embark on new adventures, he'd assumed there would have at least been actual adventures involved.
Braedan rubbed at his eye patch with minimal irritation as he thought. Years of wearing it might have brought a certain kind of tolerance but that didn't mean he'd ever grown to like it!
True, the little shop he was in was interesting (if not a trifle upsetting to his sinuses) and there was an overwhelming hint of magic and the otherworldly...but nothing had manifested in that time to have made any of this worth while. People came and went, some returned, some didn't. He rarely met the owner and had only caught a quick glimpse of her extremely odd son, and he had never met any of the other employees if there were any besides himself.
It seemed to Braedan that the shop couldn't possibly be pulling in enough revenue to continue sitting on its little plot of land. Despite that, the owner seemed more than well enough on and the shop never closed between his shifts (despite numerous dreams that it would). To make matters worse, Geoff had been practically avoiding him for the past few days.
What was the point of grounding yourself and being bored to death if you didn't have your right-hand man to be miserable with?

At first, Landon wasn't quite sure why he was standing in front of the little scent store - hadn't he been on his way to a bookshop instead? For one of his projects.... yes, he remembered that quite clearly - his projects were always first and foremost in his mind, and usually the only thing he could remember without difficulty.
So what had brought him here beforehand? Running a hand through his too-yellow-to-be-truly-blond hair, he thought for a moment before remembering that, oh yes, he had a letter in his pocket from his mother, and something that had been written on it was the reason why he had come here! Now, what had it said...?
Fumbling around in his wrinkled suit coat, the scatterbrained man finally pulled out a very crumpled and slightly stained letter. Scanning its contents briefly, his eyes alighted on the phrase that was most likely the reason behind his ending up in this spot : 'Oh, and do try to find something that will make your home smell a bit better, dear. Moldy clothes and musty books just don't make for a pleasant atmosphere!'
Yes, yes, that was right, his mother had advised him of that due to the state of his house during her last visit! Folding the letter up again, and barely noticing that it was dated to almost four months ago, Landon placed it back in his pocket and entered the store.
Surely there would be something in here that could satisfy his mother's thinly-veiled concern over his living conditions? (Really, she needn't worry so much, he was well enough off, but his projects were just so much more fascinating than housekeeping!) "Hello?" the blond called quietly as he stepped inside. "I do hope you carry what I'm looking for..."
Well, what was he looking for, exactly? Something that smelled nice, he supposed. He'd know it when he found it, at least!

Braedan stifled an internal groan as the bell tinkled merrily over the door, marking the entrance of yet another custom that he'd have to deal with. Surprisingly, despite the weight of boredom on his shoulders and his longing to be elsewhere, even the entrance of something to distract him was just as monotonous as having to stand behind the counter and fight off sleep. But the sky pirate was nothing if not polite even in the most dull of situations and he managed to straighten and smile.
For a while all he could see was the top of a too-blond head bobbing amongst the shelves and the faint murmur that was tell-tale of someone thinking out loud (or talking to themselves, which was considerably more worrisome than thinking out loud).
"Hello!" Braedan greeted the man as he finally came around one of the shelves and into his sight, reserving his welcome for when he actually saw the man instead of sound like a ghost echoing from the back rooms. "Looking for something nice I take it? What kind of scent are you looking for? Fruity? Earthy? Floral? I think there's a scent in here even for the wildest of requests so whatever it is, just let me know!" The older man gave another smile, a little tense around the corners as he recited the same thing he said to every customer that entered.

Oh -oh, wait, was someone speaking to him? Yes, yes someone was! Fantastic, utterly fantastic, now he'd be able to get whatever he needed here and then go on to that bookstore so that he could continue with his project. Landon blinked at the man addressing him, his glasses and the ever-present sleep bags giving his blue eyes a slightly owlish look as he belatedly tried to think of what exactly he wanted.
"Oh, um, well," he started to say, then fell silent as he realized that... he really didn't have much of an answer for the shopkeeper. Well, aside from what that note had said.... "Something... strong enough to stop making my house smell like moldy clothes and musty books?"
It was only after the words had left his mouth that he realized exactly how stupid he sounded, and he pressed a hand to his face to hide the embarrassed blush that had sprung up there. "My apologies, what I really need is something that will make my mother stop complaining about the state of my home when she visits... but I don't suppose you carry anything like that."
Good lord, maybe he should just turn around and walk right back out of here. It certainly wouldn't take him long to forget humiliating himself so utterly once the place was behind him!

A shrug lifted strong shoulders in a small roll as the owlish man approached and made his request. Braedan had seen that look before from that orange haired scent that worked down the street in one of the older bookstores. Her aura, so to speak, was much stronger than those of the various gel cups scattered among the shelves. Perhaps the older their physical appearance the stronger they became.
One good green eye blinked owlishly back at Landon as the man realized he'd finished talking while Braedan's mind had wandered. Lack of excitement made the brain turn a bit lazy after all. "Well I don't know about dingy clothes, but I can't imagine why you'd want to cover up the smell of books. Not that I've ever owned enough myself to make a difference but there's something quite intoxicating about going into an old book store." Actually, that might make for a great scent. Mental note: tell the owner about a candle to make your home smell like a rich library. There certainly was more than enough other weird scents in the store that it shouldn't be too hard to come up with.
"So what do you fancy then? Flowery, spicy, weird, exotic, natural? We've got a pretty big selection so I'd hate to waste your time picking every little thing off the shelf hoping to find the right match." Braedan waved vaguely around the small shop, impossibly stuffed with a variety of colors.

"To be honest, I'm not entirely certain," Landon said, glancing around at all of the little scents on the shelves. "How does one go about purchasing this type of thing?" he asked, shoving strands of blond hair out of his eyes. He shifted uncomfortably on his feet, casting about desperately for an idea.
"I suppose I'm looking for a... oh, dear, I really don't know," he stammered ."I just need something to keep my overbearing mother satisfied," he said, forgetting for the moment that his mother was neither overbearing nor in his life all that often. The fact that he was having to take time out of his precious studies to buy something that would please her made her seem very demanding, despite the plea having been sent to him months ago.
At a loss for what to do, he finally shrugged and suggested "If I really must, perhaps something floral..." He personally liked how his house smelled; it hadn't been his fault that he had forgotten about the milk for two months before his mother last came to visit! She liked flowers, though, so perhaps this would please her and he could focus on his studies again.

With money Braedan thought with a mild smile at the question about how to make a purchase. Granted, that probably hadn't been what the man had meant so the captain kept his mouth closed from any offensive comments. Landon looked awkward enough as it was already.
Already Braedan's mind was drifting towards the shelves of fruity and flowery scents at the mention of a mother. If the man didn't care for the scent in his house and it was for the benefit of a woman...well, women usually gravitated towards the fru-fru rather than the exotic and certainly not the muskier scents the few men who bought candles preferred. Men buying scents for themselves. That was rare in itself.
"Do you know what kind of flowers she likes? Some women are awfully flighty about things like that." The lanky pirate drifted out from behind the counter and towards some scents stacked near a window. Floral scents and fruity scents and, true, even a few exotic scents lingered in the air in the area. These scents in their natural state did better in the sun, so why not keep them there as gels?

"Oh, um," Landon said intelligently, then shrugged as a thought came to his mind. "She... seemed to like the roses I got her for her last birthday...? So something with a rose scent, perhaps?" The blond suggested, blue eyes alight with confusion. Unbeknownst to him those roses had been given not at his mother's last birthday, but the one before - he had forgotten her most recent one.
"I - you do carry scents with that, yes?" He asked hopefully, thinking that perhaps he could collect one and be on his way again. It shouldn't be difficult now that he had assistance, right?

Braedan chuckled at yet another question he felt had a simple answer, but he didn't want to seem rude. The owner would not be pleased if she found he'd been scaring customers off with that mouth of his. "Rose is an extremely common scent, and it mixes well with other scents, so there are a very large number of rose-based scents, and another large number of scents that have rose as an undertone. If it's rose you're looking for, then we wont have any trouble finding you something."
Turning back to the shelves his nimble fingers began plucking a variety of different colored gels onto an empty display table. Most had colors of pinks and reds, but there were a few white tones and yellows and even a random blue which looked a bit out of place but smelled like a mix of fresh laundry and a hint of rose.
"I certainly hope something here can catch your interest, but if not then I will put together andother small selection for you to sample. Most of these have the main scent of rose. These," he pointed to one side of the table, "are rose and another similar flower while these on the other side are rose and a different mix, such as fruit or spice."

Landon was perfectly used to being laughed at, since he was somewhat clueless about anything not related to his field of research. Thus, he simply peered at the scents, almost considering the blue one for a moment due to the clean scent it held, before picking up one that... well, for some reason it seemed more promising than the others. Curious, but who was he to question it. The little gel was mostly reddish pink, with what looked like flecks of yellow within it.
"I suppose this one could work," he said thoughtfully, peeking at it. "I'm afraid I don't know how , precisely, you are supposed to use one, however..."

The sky pirate was not exactly laughing at the customer, though it certainly wasn't a case of laughing with him; it was just that Braedan had trouble keeping his opinions to himself when it came to things which fell into his category of common sense. He knew what it was like to be on the receiving end of such a laugh though, and he did his best to keep the tone friendly rather than possibly insulting. Insulting was not what he wanted to be. Knowledge varied from person to person after all.
Green eyes followed Landon's choice with mild curiosity, for he'd seen the linger on the rose and laundry scent and thought it was likely to appeal to the mother more than the man, but a wide grin settled on his face when Landon picked the one that he was drawn to. Better to have a scent they were both happy with, especially if Landon had to live with the choice more than the mother.
"A lovely selection! It has a way of overpowering the room though so I suggest a bit of caution in when and how long you use it unless you're absolutely in love with it." Braedan waved the man back to the counter so the gel could be packaged with the stand and complimentary candle. "Put the gel in the stand like this," he said, demonstrating after Landon has relinquished the scent, "and then light the candle underneath. It should only take a few minutes for the heat to warm the gel and allow the scent to fill the room."
