I have heard it argued that a fetus is not alive because it cannot maintain homeostasis. Homeostasis is simply put "the ability to maintain a relatively constant internal environment." 1
How exactly does a fetus NOT maintain homeostasis? Even single-celled organisms manage to maintain homeostasis, but we're supposed to believe a growing complex organism doesn't have a constant internal environment?
If the answer is, "Well a fetus can't regulate its own homeostasis," I have news for you.
Neither can we if you define regulation of homeostasis like that.
The womb is literally an environment. It is home to hundreds of thousands of microbes. There are millions of organisms dependant on our body for survival because our bodies are the perfect environment for these organisms. That's why they live there.
The earth is also an environment. It has the perfect conditions for our survival in some places. In others, we can adapt the environment to fit what we need to survive. But if you were to take me and put me in outer space unprotected, I would not be able to maintain homeostasis. I would die.
It is a myth that humans are totally independant. We depend on many, many things, and many creatures for survival. I'll add more later, this is just a stub really, but I just wanted to get the idea out there.

Very true. Humans can't survive if you take them out of their environment, either. You can't judge a fetus as if it were a born human, they're just different. Because...they just are, but pro-choicers don't seem to want to acknowledge that. You can't tell me a fish isn't as alive as a human because it can't survive in the same environment as a human can. Humans can't survive underwater, and after they leave the uterus, they can't survive in it anymore. eek that's a very weird mental image...

The poor mice! Oh my heart is breaking. >.< I almost cried when I saw that. They're killing off mice to see if they can make them breathe underwater?

They're trying to use this technology to save heart attack patients by getting oxygen to their brain. It's sad, but at least it's being used to save lives, it's not just randomly killing animals.
