what does your band use?
Ours uses contra because we are a drum corps influenced band, and our director works with three differents corps (cabelleros, cavalliers, and raiders), and in his opinion they sound much better then sousas which just project...what do you guys use?

we use 3/4 sized convertible tubas because our sousaphones are 30-40 years old and our band director prefers tubas, but supposedly the other high school in our county is giving us their silver tubas (maybe contras we arent sure of the size) in return for our sousaphones.

Well, we use Sousas, but personally I prefer contras, as do our tuba players. They are always joking around about "shoulder canons" and once boycotted our shiny new silver sousas in replacement of their not-so shiny tubas. They got in trouble(which didnt make anybody happy. we all like contras better, and their protest was pretty honorable, as was taking off the unwanted berets right before they marched onfield.)

we have sousas...i don't think we have any...contras? those are the ones i see in pics of drum corps? idk we just have sousas and concert tubas...lol theres one sousa they call the god tuba because its so shiny and pretty-colored. its also the one with only one handle on the case and its about 10 pounds heavier than the others lol.

In my corps we use contras (duh) but in my marching band we use sousaphones. I prefer contras because the sound is more focused. Plus, you just look SO much more badass with them.

We have Sousas at my high school and my future college, but in corps it's contras (of course).
Contras look cooler, but I think they should be mainly for corps or very competitive field marching bands. I prefer Sousas for high school bands and college "show marching" bands, as well as bands more serious about parade.
I think contras have a more direct sound because they have a more focused bell, but the purpose of the Sousa was to project the music upwards and outwards over the band. The Sousa wasn't even meant to be a marching instrument.

We march contras, which we borrow from the Reading Buccaneers! They're giant, silver, and shiny...makes me wish I played them.
I prefer them to sousaphones 'cause you can actually do horn moves with them...to me they sound better, too.

Our high school has five Sousaphones that we use for marching. We don't go to competitions, so I'm not really surprised that we don't have contras.
may I say that I'm very fond of sousaphones, even over concert tubas.
