It was obvious to even Val, who hated the place more than anything, that this wasn't the way it should have ended. The director had been known for being unreliable, with his long sick leaves and even longer holidays, but he always seemed to turn up one way or the other (albeit with a bad tan). Not this time, however..
What started off as a week without him soon became a month without him, and then half a year without him, and then it became hard for Valycinte to remember how long. For a while it almost seemed the Home would function even without its leader, the patients receiving their regular injections and regular counselling and regular meals and regular everything the red-head hated. But slowly and yet surely, the staff started falling away. It was hard to tell at first, Val being one to avoid the asylum whenever he could, that the halls became quiet without the determined sound of the nurses' footsteps. If he had sought out the other patients a little more, he might have noticed their deterioration into insanity without the gentle words of the two doctors to bring them back. It wasn't until the middle of spring when, after an enjoyable night, he shivered his way back to damp and dreary asylum grounds and found none of the lights were on. What the-
It wouldn't take him long to find the lunatic he was bound to. Viscount Greenleaf he called himself nowadays, which in itself was enough proof for Val that you might be able to cure someone of their insane desire to kill people but you can't cure them of being a ******** nutcase. Floating from one dark and cold room to another, the state of the asylum told him enough. Its vibrant inhabitants were long gone. They had disappeared without his notice like the ghosts that they were. It came as a mild shock to him when he turned a corner and was met by a lit up room containing 'his' crazy, as he imagined Vis might have left with everyone else. He cleared his throat in the doorway with the intent to startle him as Val had been startled, but the patient barely even showed that he had noticed him. He just stood there, slouched, and started speaking. "I'm the only one left, Val," he said pleadingly, his eyes unable to focus on even his imaginary 'friend' and instead ended up staring somewhere along the hallway. His cheeks looked sunken in, as it had in the days when madness had first fully gripped him, and with his pale skin it almost gave Valycinte the idea he was looking at the man's skeleton instead of his face. Demeanour softened, be it by genuine pity or need for information, the red-headed apparition stood beside the man he had spent so long hating. "Where did they all go to? Why are you the only one here?" The other man remained quiet for a while and then let his head sink, followed by his shoulders, and shuddered as he stooped over and fell to the floor. He gave his answer from the tiles. "I don't know." A muffled sigh."There's one nurse left that checks on me sometimes. She says the others didn't commit murder like me so they could go to, ah," some squirming followed as the man tried his memory, "low security facilities.. whatever those are.. I miss other people.. " He muttered more after this, but a quickly advancing clacking noise made it impossible to hear. Valycinte swiftly melted into the wall when the fresh face of a nurse made itself known in the light of the doorway.
"Now, now, Mr. Greenleaf.. You know that I told you about the couple of investors that came to look at this place," The nurse spoke in a sing-song voice as she moved to get the man upright. "They liked it, and it should be opened again in March. All your friends will come back! Ms. Ruriska and Ms. Autumn.. Wouldn't you like to see them again? Up you go!" She punctuated that last sentence by forcefully propping Vis against the wall and making him face it in a position where he wouldn't be able to fall over. Happy with this victory over gravity and a lunatic, she clacked her way back to the nurses' station. Val had heard enough.
Floating to a place he had often visited since a certain visit with a delightful green apparition, he felt glad for once that the Home had not ended. Setting himself down on one of the large chairs facing the even larger windows, through which now only moonlight shone, he thought to himself what a sad way it would have been to go. Strands of hair coloured a ghostly purple by the light fell over his eyes as he propped his face of his hand and sighed. It could have left him without the people who, only in the privacy of his own mind, he referred to as friends. Now the Home and him had been given a second chance and he would use it pay closer attention to its returning inmates.
Not too close, of course.. He still hated most of them.

At first the change hadn’t been all that bad. Ruriska seemed to be getting better and the new facility had a delightful garden with a fountain and lots of benches. Of course she would have liked to have stayed at her old apartment but during a relapse episode where she had attempted to take a blood sample off a stalking target with a syringe (sterilized, she always liked to add) had meant she was going to a Home whether she liked it or not. But not to the old Home which housed people she adored, but instead this place with its well maintained lawn and salmon coloured walls.
Nexium had taken the move a little bit harder. While Ruri was easily distracted and constantly forgot she even had friends, Nexi’s self was centred on those he had made connections with. Being with Ruri helped with that, but when she drifted off in her vague way, he couldn’t help but remember those he was desperately missing. Val of course topped that list.
After a while however Ruriska had also grown discontent and had proceeded to leave her new home by various means and run off into nowhere, only to be repeatedly caught and eventually strapped to a bed. But everything was all going to be okay now because The Happy Home had been saved and they were being transferred. And so, sometime during March a bus full of crazy people stopped in front of the Home and the nurses set about reinstalling them all.
Ruriska was standing in the lobby with people moving about her, a nurse directing everyone out into the hallways. Nexium stood beside her, one arm draped around her shoulder. She smiled at him, not bothering to hide her interactions with her invisible friend. “You can go now. I’ll be fine.”
He blinked at her, dark hair falling across his face and then nodded. “Thankyou Ruri. I will come back later.” He gave her an affectionate kiss on the cheek and then slipped away, passing through the wall and making his way through various rooms in search of his old friend.
Nothing would please him more now than to see Val again after so long. He would be happy too, wouldn't he? Unconciously he moved in a direction towards the solarium. It held good memories for him and now with his much more solid form, disappearing in the sun wouldn't be so much of an issue.

The solarium provided an excellent vantage point to spot incoming vehicles, and while he now knew the license plate of every single one of the new staff members by heart, he had yet to see the vehicle he was looking for. Until about five minutes ago.
No. I will not.. I will not.. Valycinte frowned as he tried to convince himself that he would not- Absolutely not- go out there to the bus that just pulled into the grounds and hover around it like some prepubescent girl waiting for Justin Bieber to show. His midnight pondering wasn't forgotten, but on the surface it appeared its influence had waned somewhat in the bright daylight of the past few days. Mouth drawn into a scowl and his arms crossed, Val made a good attempt of looking like he really could not care less whether the vehicle contained anything at all. But yellow eyes curiously flickering from window to window betrayed the fact that he was eager to know which inmates would be returning today.
I wonder if he's there, he mused, craning his head to look past the Home's particularly wild grass and narrowing his eyes as he caught sight of a familiar shade of- Duck? What the hell? His brows knitted in confusion as he noticed a duck wearing a hat and smoking a cigarette jostling onto a hill, expertly managing to not only block Val's line of sight but also looking perfectly disapproving while doing so. It seemed the arrival of the Home's inhabitants necessarily brought with it a weird assortment of creatures that seemed to sprout directly from their insane minds. The red-headed apparition struggled to remember why he had wanted them to come back at all, as he sought a window that would allow him to see past the (still frowning) duck. Of course.. He scowled once more as he noticed the bus was now empty. Thanks a lot, Donald.
Setting himself down on one of the chairs, he weighed his options. He would have preferred to have seen who had arrived before they saw him, but getting the drop on them was now undoable. Surely the staff would have the inmates split up and settled in their rooms as soon as possible. A hand wove itself into his reddish hair as Val tried to remember what room the stalker-girl inhabited, and frustratedly dropped again as he remembered he had never known that at all. And even if he had known where she was, what the hell would it say about Val to come bounding around the corner at the moment she- and him- arrived? It'd say that I've been waiting around for him like a pathetic puppy, is what it would say, Val scoffed, trying to convince himself that wasn't exactly what he had been doing. Saying hello on the first day.. I'd have to be really desperate to do that, he decided, shifting uncomfortably in the old chair. Tomorrow I'll go see him, if he's even here. Not that I care if he is or if he isn't. That last thought seemed to have reached the duck, as its beady eyes turned once again in Val's direction and it gave a disapproving quack, unsettling the apparition a little more.

Nexium glided through each room, always careful to avoid contact with anyone should the room be occupied. On more than one occasion he stopped to watch a nurse settled in one of the old and even some new occupants; but he quickly moved on and before long he was standing outside the door to the solarium. This was where he paused, one hand tugging down his top and then flicking any errant stray pieces of dark hair from his face. There was no guarantee he was even in there or that the Val would even be happy to see him, which made the little nervous butterflies in his chest utterly pointless.
Don’t be silly. He chided himself; his hand now resting gently against his chest. Nexi desperately hoped that Val would indeed by there, but if not he would simply search the entire building until the red haired friend was located. Nexi had been waiting too long to let a sudden onset of nerves to keep him from seeing Val.
With his shoulders set determinedly he simply walked straight through the door, blinded for half a second by the brightness of the room. And there he was, sitting in a chair, staring broodingly out the window. Nexi just stood there, watching him with a fond smile and drinking in the sight of the first friend he could touch and hug and adore. His hair slipped free from its place again and this time he ignored it, taking a few small steps forward and uttering the others name.
“Val…” That one word was filled with warmth; all his early anxiety vanished.

Valycinte wasn't certain he had a heart, but something in his chest sure jumped at the sound of that voice. Before turning around to face what had to be him- Him, he's here- the red-head struggled to get his body under control, as it seemed intent on revealing him to Nexi as being pretty ******** nervous. Much to his dismay his body opted for a compromise instead: his hands would stop twitching but the anxious expression stayed. A pretty lousy deal if you asked Val, but he settled for it as he got up and turned to Nexi. "Hello, Nexi," he said before he'd gotten a good look at the man standing in front of him.
He might not have been able to say it so calmly otherwise. Nexi was brilliantly visible in the bright room and yellow eyes took the sight in with eager pleasure. Valycinte had forgotten how much the other had changed since they'd last been here. Back then Nexi was only a boy, obviously new to his surroundings and maybe even to his body, while Val was an adult who thought he knew everything (and hated it all). An unlikely combination to make friends but it had worked that day. Now things were definitely different, definitely taller and more handsome, Val thought as he appraisingly cast his eye over the other apparition. He idly wondered if they could still get along, when Nexi had grown so much and he barely anything at all.
"So, what brings you back?" Val surprised himself that he didn't just start talking about the weather, as he posed the question while walking towards Nexium and the distraction the other provided must've short-circuited every part of his brain (including the small talk section). Fried or not, the small talk area joined forces with some snarky part of his brain and bravely soldiered on: "It can't possibly be the great facilities.. or the patients.. Maybe it's me?" A stupid question, as Val was (usually) very well aware that Nexi would go wherever that stalker-girl would go. It wouldn't hurt to fluster the other though, now that Val was near enough to him to be able to see blushes appear. Being so close he couldn't stop a smile from appearing on his face. It's good to see you again.

While Valycinte was drinking in the sight of his old friend, Nexium was doing very much the same, rather covertly from half lidded eyes. The first greeting was hardly ecstatic and the tone could have been used to note the weather; but Nexi didn’t mind. He knew well enough that Val was hardly one for great shows of affections. That was Nexi’s area and he could make up for Val’s lacking for both of them.
When they had first met he had been so new and young; he had developed a strong attachment to the older apparition and he had believed Val to be far more wonderful than anybody else he had met (excepting Ms. Ruri of course) and now grown older he felt pretty much exactly the same. In the space of a few short minutes together Nexi had gone to wariness to adoring Val with every inch of his being. He held the prized memory of Val acknowledging their friendship close to his heart and thinking of it now caused his smile to broaden.
So, what brings you back?
Of course the reason he was back was because two enterprising individuals had chosen to save The Happy Home from a sad, lonely demise and then Ruri’s transfer due to being far too hard to handle. However if the question was why are you back here in the solarium, well of course the answer was Val and that was the one he decided to run with. Unfortunately for the red-haired apparition, Nexium was not flustered and nor did he blush. It was only natural for him to be open with his feelings.
As soon as the smile appeared on Val’s face, Nexi took it as his cue to step forward and throw his arms around his friend’s neck. “I missed you Val.”

How can he be so warm? Valycinte wondered as he struggled against the temptation of fully sinking into the embrace. Part of him was startled by the sudden invasion of his personal space and wanted to back off from the impossible closeness of Nexi. But as his arms moved to hold the other and his head tilted to nestle into Nexium's shoulder and his hands started tracing nonsensical patterns on the other's back, it was very obvious that part of Val had lost. It had been so long. So long holding anybody, really, but Nexium especially. Felt like years. Closing his eyes for a moment, Val murmured: "I missed you too."
After a few seconds Val started to feel that if they stayed like this- so comfortable- much longer he'd have to speak again, and didn't know if he could help himself from blurting out terribly honest things about him and his feelings. Somewhat unwillingly leaning out of the hug, Valycinte took another good look at the apparition in front of him. Now that he was blocking the sun he could see Nexi a little clearer and noticed the other had a feather stuck in his hair. Val smirked. "Don't tell me you have a bird, Nexi? Or should I be getting jealous around you and things with feathers?"
The duck, now settled comfortably on the hill, couldn't help but snort at that.

This was perfect. This was exactly what he had wanted, what he had needed. Every worry, every stress from the past few weeks that had been building up washed away as if it had never existed. Sure he would have been okay with just Ruri, if that was the only choice, but this was so much better. He finally felt like he was home.
Nexium probably could have stayed like that for an indefinite amount of time, but he allowed Val to pull back without protest. At the mention of his bird, Nexi looked mildly confused before realizing that the feather had given it away. “I’ve fallen in love Val.” Nexi replied with a silly little grin as he plucked the feather out of his hair and twirled it in his fingers. “His name is Blue and every morning when we wake up he sings to me.”
The apparition chuckled as he reached out and tucked the blue feather into Val’s hair instead. “We couldn’t get him on the bus with us, but Ruri organized to have him transported here. You can meet him then. He’s a Budgerigar.” The first budgie that Nexi had owned had unfortunately died and it had taken a while for to want to get another, but now the new delightful little blue bird was already part of the family and could actually see Nexium, whereas the other one had nearly died of a heart attack every time he had filled up the birds food tray.
“No need to be jealous though. His hugs aren’t half as good as yours.”

"But my hugs aren't enough to make you fall in love with me," he said as he reached up to touch the little feather in his hair. "Apparently I'd have to take up singing lessons for that." Valycinte wasn't quite sure why he had just said that, or what it even meant to have a comfortable moment last this long. And yet, running a finger along the feather's vane, a small smile accompanied an equally small thought: I hope it lasts a little longer.
That hope soon proved idle as Val's cynical nature, which was forced into submission by the shock of seeing and holding Nexium again, resurfaced with a vengeance. Fifteen minutes with him and I'm already thinking like a lovesick imbecile, how disgusting, he chastised himself. The small smile faded as Valycinte turned to face away from Nexi. Unwilling for there to be a silence, he asked: "Any other pets I should know about?", but it was obvious his thoughts were distracting him. "I have to tell you, I don't like ducks." He was upset that he had let himself get so caught up in the moment. He was unnerved by the fact that someone could make him feel so many of the emotions he usually hated to see in others. "And those dogs that look like rats creep me out." What does he want with me, he wondered, looking far too serious to be talking about chihuahuas. Golden eyes flickered back over to blue ones, searching. All he found was that he couldn't even look at the other for too long without wanting to- ugh- hug him again. He didn't understand the feeling. What do I want with him?

“Oh Val…” Nexi laughed softly. “I already do love you… even if you can’t sing.” He added the last part with a cheeky smile. The words were said so lightly, rolling easily off the tongue as if he spoke them every day. After all, he loved Ruri didn’t he? This wasn’t any different. Or was it? The only romantic love that Nexium understood was what he had seen in the movies; seemingly far away from his own existence. His expression changed from open warmth to a thoughtful frown; fingers idly playing with the hem of his shirt.
“No, there are no other pets. While I would love a giant aviary of exotic birds, it’s unfortunately not very practical.” Nexi attempted to meet Val’s gaze but the golden eyes would quickly dart away before he could read much from them; after a few moments of this Nexium became somewhat frustrated by the evasion. He had always been the emotional type; quick to smile and equally fast to cry if the situation called for it. And in most cases he understood exactly why he was feeling one thing or another…
But this one, this was something new. There was something strangely tight in his chest. “Of course I love you.” The apparition repeated, almost completely for his own benefit. You’re my best friend and… Then Nexium did something he had never done before; he completely changed the subject. “This place looks like it needs a dust! I’m so glad we got to come back here, though I do hope Ruri can set up a competitive chess club for me. So… so how have you been?”
