After Eli's request to go explore Kevin had to think about where he could bring him. The city was pretty far away, but he knew that a river ran through this area not too far off from the stream. They could go there to explore.
So, after making sure everything was in its place, the sokoke took Eli's wrist as he had before--so he didn't lose him, and so he couldn't escape--and began to lead him towards the riverbank that was a decent walk away. It was nice out, anyway, and the sun wasn't supposed to set for a while, so..
"The river is where Nao usually gets the fish," the stream was nice, but it didn't have very big fish, "I haven't been to the river in a while," he admitted, shrugging a bit. Hopefully his past experiences wouldn't turn up again.

Eli couldn't say as he minded (though it should be noted that he was under the impression that this wrist-holding was for the purpose of not being separated as opposed to the more dramatic hand-cuff effect it was actually intended for). Considering that he'd had his tail temporarily kidnapped earlier, having his wrist held wasn't so bad in comparison.
"Why not?" Eli asked, not that Kevin needed to provide a reason or anything, but he was curious. As long as one wasn't getting pushed into it, a river could be tons of fun.
Oh wait, could that have been the reasoning? "Did you fall into it, or something?" Because that would, Eli figured, suck. ☮

Glancing back at him, he kept his grip on the man loose, giving a slight shrug at the question. He supposed the situation wasn't uncommon, but eh. He felt dumb.
"A bunch of strays came after me there," he murmured, smiling a bit. Kind of a dramatic change in his personality from earlier. Apparently he was bipolar. "That's kind of how I met Nao, so I've just never gone back." But, it was about time to face the fears anyway. It had been a while, not like they're really hurt him too badly since he still seemed like he had all of his appendages in tact.
"But I'd prefer to not fall in either," he chuckled, tail swaying against the backs of his thighs as he walked, "I cant swim very well." And he was tiny, which made it even worse. Maybe Eli was big enough to help catch fish and stuff.

Admittedly, at first, Eli was a little skeptical as he stared at Kevin. It was hard to believe anyone would go after him, considering how tiny and sweet he was-- until it dawned on him that in actuality, as unfortunate as it was, that probably only made Kevin an easier target. Poor thing, that was really awful.
He furrowed his brow for a moment, before grinning at him with a confident swish of his own tail. "Guess you don't have to worry this time, huh? Now that I'm here to protect you and all that." Not that he could do much if bigger cats showed up, but Eli was mostly only saying so in hopes of getting Kevin to smile like he was before, as opposed to the way he was now.
"And if you do fall in, I can pull you out," he added, shaking his wrist free of Kevin's hand so that he could ruffle his hair playfully. ☮

Kevin wasn't weak by any standard--but then again, he'd grown since there. Physically and mentally. He wasn't as young and he was more prepared for a life as a stray than before he came to this territory, so, he supposed it was a good learning experience if nothing else.
At least, that's how he wanted to look at things.
Smiling up at him--he couldn't help it, for just teasing him to the point of a tantrum and being told he'd protect him kind of surprised him--before squeaking when his hair was ruffled. Lifting his fingers, he combed them through his blonde hair and pursed his lips a bit.
"Thank you," he gave another smile now that he'd fixed his hair, ears perking and tail fluffing up a little, "Can you swim?" Kevin questioned, cocking his head and looking up at the larger cat through his bangs. What, he was curious. If he could maybe he could help fish..or something.

Eli only grinned in acknowledgment. It was tempting to ruffle his hair again just for fun, but he didn't. After all, it wouldn't do much good to complain about the bullying from earlier only to turn around and be a bully himself all temptation aside.
That aside, he thought about the question for a moment, then shrugged. "I don't know, I've never tried. But I can pull you out," he added quickly, not wanting his promise to be called into question. "And I can learn. Maybe." It didn't sound like something he'd enjoy-- swimming, in general, but now that the thought of falling in was brought up, it probably wouldn't hurt to learn. You know, for the sake of not drowning.
Kicking lightly at a pebble as they walked, he puffed a cheek out contemplatively. "Just do me a favor, and don't fall in.~" ☮

Smirking at this, he crossed his arms behind his back and watched their feet as they walked. Humming in response to his comments, he chuckled and glanced back at him for a moment, "I'll try not to," and with that, he trotted up the hill a bit to look down over the shore of the river.
Flicking his tail this way and that, he cocked his head and looked across the shore to a few humans wandering. Not that they could get over here very quickly, so he didn't worry about it. Plus, he tended to like human company anyway.
Looking back at him to make sure that Eli was still following, he slid down the small hill before plopping his feet into the sand with a smile. "I bet the water is cold," he mused, padding up until he was a foot or so from the water's edge. It was still the tail end of winter, so it made him want to get in the water even less. That and his dislike for water was flaring up anyway.

Eli didn't take much care in going down the hill. He ran-- not, because he was excited or anything, but because he was terrible at thinking things through. Even though there was a decent about of distance from the water at the bottom, he skidded to a stop which resulted in him falling backwards onto his rump. Lesson learned: Walk slowly next time. At least he hadn't grabbed onto Kevin to drag down with him.
Standing up as if nothing at happened, aside from wiping his hands off on his outer thighs, Eli hummed in response with a nod.
"Probably," he agreed, walking over to crouch down next to where the water met the shore line. Reaching out, he touched the tip of his finger into the water, only to draw it back and shake it off, pulling a rather dissatisfied face.
"It's cold," he confirmed. "Like ice, except. . . Not solid." ☮

Standing a good few paces away from the water's edge, he chuckled a bit when the other shook his hand off. That's what he figured, but that meant the fish would be moving slower, at least. Kicking at some sand, he pointed up the shore a bit and smiled, "That's our main fishing spot. There's this little pool that the fish gather in cause the water is slower," he hummed, trying to think of why he figured the river would be so excited.
Looking up at an overhung hill, he pointed again, "That's where the cats that like to swim go. Apparently the water is really nice in the spring, so they come here to swim," not just the territory cats, either. He probably wouldn't be caught dead here during the warmer months. Paranoia was hard to pull from him, apparently.
Once again, he motioned to another area, across the river where the humans were, "That's their camping ground and stuff..a lot of pairs of humans go over there. Sometimes they try to cross the river to come get us, but they never get far. The middle of the river has a fast current," and with that, he plopped onto his butt in the warm sand and stretched out his legs, tail wrapping partially around his waist to keep out of the sand.
"I like this place when the sun goes down. The water turns a bunch of different colors," Kevin mused, watching the water idly. Well, to him the river was fun. Might not have been the adventure that Eli was looking for, but they could always explore a little bit.

Eh, an adventure was an adventure so long as he had no idea where he was going or what he was supposed to be doing. Seeing as Eli had never been to the river before, nor the church (he'd even seen a brand new bed called a confessional!), the requirements had been met. Easy to please? Yes, but really, how could that ever be a bad thing?
Still eying the water, Eli nodded, looking up at what Kevin was pointing out a few seconds late. But he got the gist of the layout, and that's what was important in the end.
"Try to get you?" He asked, not seeming at all amused by the thought. "To do what? Play with?"
His earlier dissatisfaction with the cold water immediately seemed to transfer over to the humans in question, not wanting at all to fall victim to their weird little. . He almost snorted at the thought of calling it a game of 'cat and mouse'.
Shaking his head, he merely plopped down in front of the water to smack the edge of the waves that kept creeping up on the shore. What? It was entertaining. "I like it now. Even though it's cold. Think the fish ever talk about how cold it is?" Could fish even talk to each other, let alone think? He didn't know, but if they could talk amongst themselves, he bet that they'd complain about it being freezing, too. ☮

Chuckling a bit, he glanced over towards the feline and cocked his head a bit, "No, to try to bring us home. Or to the pound," he shrugged a little, slowly moving to scoot a bit closer to the other, though kept away from the waves as best he could--and the splashing caused from Eli smacking at them.
"Can fish talk?" He blinked looking over to the other as if Eli knew. He had never thought about the fish talking--birds talked, and rats, and dogs. But he'd never thought about fish. He just ate the fish. Rats were too hard to catch and they teased cats when they couldn't catch them, so...
Smiling at his comments either way, his tail flicked and he leaned back against his palms, crossing his ankles. "I'd complain about it, too."

"Maybe," he shrugged, thinking it over. "Probably about nothing important." Eli was just making an educated guess. What could fish really talk about anyway? If he were a fish, he'd be complaining constantly, he decided. After all, all they did was sit around and wait for other things to eat them. For a fleeting moment, he kind of felt sorry for them.
"Have they ever caught anyone?" He asked, using his heels to push himself backwards, away from the waves so that he could sit in alignment with Kevin. He grinned at the trail he left, then motioned towards the humans over the river.
"And taken anyone to the pound?" Because that idea wasn't comforting in the slightest. Getting locked up wasn't fun to begin with, but to be locked up in a pound with a whole bunch of other animals? Eli huffed. "That's rude." ☮

Chuckling again, he stretched his legs back out and tapped the sides of his feet together, listening to the other as he spoke.
"I donno. I've had a human come up and pet me before but he didn't try to take me anywhere. I've just been warned that humans take kittens and cats and keep them or bring them to a shelter or pound," he shrugged a little, then moved to lie back, crossing his arms behind his head as he watched the birds flutter and talk amongst themselves.
His tail swayed against the sand and he pursed his lips, thinking he should probably go back to see if anyone had come home, but...he kind of didn't want to leave, now.
"For all I know it could just be a scary story someone took seriously. Like the testing Facility that I've heard so much about."

"Testing facility?" Eli echoed, pulling his knees up to his chest to hug them. He looked down at Kevin, interest seeming to have been captured yet again. Not that that had proved to be hard to do or anything, because. . It wasn't.
"What's the testing facility?" It didn't sound particularly good. Tests were either really annoying (he'd learned that from when the little boy of the family came home from school with bad grades) or really scary (i.e. the vet; blood tests were horrifying). Why would anyone, in that case, dedicate an entire facility to it?
Eli scooted a bit so that he could hover over him, perplexed. "And if you've heard so much about it, how do you know it's only a story?" ☮
