After hearing all the stories from my coworkers and looking at all the youtube footage I can safely say that it was worse than I initially thought it was. One house about a 20 minute drive from where I live is now completely submerged and is now resting out in the middle of the bay. A lot of surrounding houses were damaged and destroyed as well.
Official news footage.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJHjiyppxRsI can see the location where this was filmed from my house. It's about a 2 minute walk down to the rock wall on Alii drive. The top of the rock wall where the girl runs to is normally around 8 feet above sea level and the wave easily rises above that and spills into the street.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2z5o0qVH0YI'm getting concerned for my island. About a week ago the original fissure for the volcano down south that opened up during the 80's had reopend and started spewing lava again. With the growing geologic activity in the ring of fire I'm starting to think the big one for Hawaii isn't far in the future.
