User ImageNovacaine was wandering further and further from his home each day, though he always managed to make his way back by nightfall. He was independent -- and a little scatter-brained -- but he wasn't ready to leave his family forever, or even just a night.

Sure, Mayhem made fun of him sometimes. And, yeah, Mom still didn't really know who he was...but at least he was one of her favorite voices in her head, and that had to count for something.

The teen was out wandering that day again, bright and early, his brilliant green eyes surveying the land with vague interest. His puppish love of...well, everything...hadn't worn off as he aged, although he wasn't so openly fascinated anymore. And he hadn't ever tried fishing again, since that time he fell in the river.

He wished Stormkeeper were around, though. He hadn't really made many friends in the pack, and it'd been so long since he'd seen his childhood buddy that he was starting to wonder if she'd wandered off. And now Smirnoff, his lynx, had wandered off somewhere too. Great. He couldn't help feel a little abandoned. He'd even welcome Fubar's company, but even his cousin seemed elsewhere today.

Ah well. Sighing, he returned his attentions to the world around him. Surely there was something interesting he could do with his day...

'Why won't father listen to me?' Ayizoe was clearly overstepping his boundaries, but Downburst would hear none of it. Nor'Eastern's father just shook his head at his son and sauntered off, looking for his mother. Nor'Eastern was a good seed, his father had said so himself, why would he make up tales? He'd trusted Ayizoe since the day he joined them in the wastelands, but perhaps father was too blind, too kind to see something even if it was happening right before his face.

Nor'Eastern knew his grandmother was near the drinking hole, he'd just seen her as he passed by. He needed to walk this off, before he lost his cool. His father was his hero, always had been since he was just a pup. DownBurst left the almighty Agua Azul pack to stand by his mother. He carried on, after waking up one morning to find his lover had left and taken with her four of their five puppies. His heart was so big and his soul, old, but that doesn't mean he should disregard the honest word of his young son. Nor'Eastern was an adult now, he had the right mind to leave and join another pack, where he could prove his worth, but that wasn't right. Family is thicker than blood.

He continued on the beaten path, past the greening weeds. Spring would be here soon enough, meaning food would be less scarce, and the flowers would bloom again, by night's light. Nor'Eastern wasn't sure where he was going, but he thought back to something his grandmother, Mania, had said to him just the day before, 'Follow the signs.' Signs? More non-sense perhaps. But it couldn't hurt, just maybe he'd find something worthwhile on his outing.

Novacaine stopped, brow furrowed, and cast a glance around himself. That was odd. He'd never been here before. He peered across the land, which seemed to have faded from the beachsides and sparse woods he was accustomed to into an open space. Desert-like, almost.

How fascinating!

He pondered a moment on the gradual shift from loam to sand. It was like the beach again, he thought, but without the sea-salt taste on the air. Interesting. He sniffed at the sky, contemplatively, and recognized the scent of wolves. Unfamiliar wolves.

Doubly fascinating.

Making a split-second decision, he headed toward the wolf-scent, his unnervingly bright eyes scanning the area. Maybe he could find a wolf he wasn't related to. That was always a pleasant surprise.

Nor'Eastern kicked the pebbles before him as he went, still infuriated by his father's easy-going nature. 'Impossible!' He was positive his father had no idea how far he was driving a stake between their once strong father-and-son bond. He was a pack leader, a father, and he should be acting as such!

The youth hung his head in dismay, but shot up as soon as he noticed a freshly made path. No one in their pack traveled out this far. Mania had once tried, creating quite the scare, but no one since then. It was most definitely fresh for he could still smell the scent; unfamiliar as it was. A stranger in their lands? He scoffed. 'Father would welcome them with open arms.'

Nor'Eastern would handle this, there was no need to involve his father or anyone else for that matter. And so he set out, trailing behind Gods-knew what, with his family on his mind. He wasn't sure how he'd defend himself or put up a very good fight, without ever having had a confrontation before, but he'd put up a strong front. 'Yeah, scare them down!' He prayed that would be enough to send them packing.

Pink, lots of pink crossed his mind. The flowers would be out soon, but not now. What was the source of all that color? 'The wolf!' He barred his teeth and took off like a jet, trying to close the distance between them, without so much as a plan in mind.

Novacaine froze, realizing too late that another wolf was coming at him -- and that aforementioned wolf's intentions didn't seem friendly.

The pink teen wasn't exactly a fighter. In fact, he was probably the single most useless wolf in the world when it came to combat. He just...didn't have it in him. It wasn't really a "lover, not a fighter" thing, or a gentle giant thing, or any of those other situations. Honestly, he was just a little too oblivious to have that sort of survival skill.

So when the green wolf flew at him, all fang and snarl and intimidation, Novacaine didn't growl back...didn't assume a submissive position...didn't move from his position. Instead, he simply stood where he was, head tilted to the side with polite curiosity, and stared a little vacantly -- but also very intently, probingly -- at the other wolf with those strangely bright lime-green eyes. "Oh. Hello."

'What the ---?'

Before Nor'Eastern could even register the simple greeting, he realized (much too late) that he wasn't going to be able to stop before the polite intruder. He withdrew his teeth and made his descent from his long bound and bowled the poor pink wolf over.

Moments later, Nor'Eastern could only lift his head from where ever it was laying. With his vision wavering and head aching, he could only make out a tail. 'Since when did you have stripes on there?' That certainly didn't look familiar, and neither did the haunting neon eyes that were staring at him. He flew up and onto his hind legs, trying to put distance between the two of them. He dropped onto all fours now.

"What? This doesn't...."

Why had this wolf simply stood there and let himself be mounted? No, 'mounted' was definitely not the right word for it. It wasn't like he set out to do it. He was in attack mode after all. Nor'Eastern tried to shrug off the uncomfortable still between them before beginning again, breastplate raised and out.

"This is my packs' land. Who and what are you doing here?"

'Yeah, that sounded macho!'

Novacaine sprawled out beneath the other wolf's weight, completely unresisting. He lay there for a moment, slightly dazed, as the more aggressive creature rose and sorted himself out. Well. That certainly wasn't what he had expected to happen today.

He shook his head and, with some effort, found his way back to his paws, testing each one in turn, as though verifying that they were all in fact connected to his body and still in working order.

After a few shakes of the paw he seemed convinced enough that he was all in one piece, and he looked over Nor'Eastern curiously. "You could have just told me to leave," he said, in a voice that was a flat monotone, inscrutable whether he was upset or not. "You didn't have to knock us both in the sand, really."

He looked over the other wolf with those probing eyes, and was silent for a long while.

"You look familiar," he said, after an uncomfortable pause, apparently oblivious that he had not answered any of his questions. He couldn't quite place what about him had caught his eye, but something had. The shades of blue and green in his pelt, perhaps? There was something...evocactive, almost...in the color, and he couldn't even tell why. Very frustrating. "Why do you look familiar?"

Nor'Eastern stood, dumbfounded and stared through the wolf for a minute or two. Was he serious? He had wanted him to ask, not act? Had he just overreacted? NO! He was defending his own. This wolf, he wasn't right; not normal. Where was his canine instinct?

"I, I look 'familiar' to you? I can't imagine why, I'm positive I'd remember such a fluorescent wolf."

Nor'Eastern smirked and began circling the other wolf. Perhaps he could make the other confess to whatever intentions he had being out this far, by intimidation. If this wolf were playing dumb, he would let him.

"What about me looks so 'familiar' to you?"

"You're not exactly earth-toned yourself," Novacaine said, reasonably. He watched carefully as the other wolf circled him, his expression impassible. Whether he was very brave or just oblivious was hard to tell. He settled back to his haunches.

"It's probably nothing. I know I don't know -you-. It's just...." his brow furrowed. Growing up in such an enormous family as his, Novacaine was quite good at recognizing relations between wolves. It was a survival skill, after all. Wouldn't do to have him chase after some lovely female only to realize she was a third cousin or something. "Well, anyway. Who are you? I'm Novacaine. I love....back there, someplace. Agua Azul lands. This isn't Agua Azul anymore, is it?"
PostPosted: Sun May 15, 2011 11:31 am

So this stranger, now known as Novacaine, had a sense of humor. How fitting! Nor'Eastern rolled his eyes before slowing his pace to a lazy swag.

"You have a point, but nature has it's purposes for using such bright colors. Take the poison dart frogs for example. My family's coats are enough to run off even the stupidest of canines."

A light jab, but Nor wondered if the other would even pick up on it. Instead he turned his attention to the mention of his father's origins, the Agua Azul lands. Had this stranger come looking for them? Downburst had left the lands on account of his family's wishes to outcast his mother. Had they followed after them with hopes of spilling blood on their minds? Now Nor was beginning to worry again, this whole situation may be bigger than both he and this stranger.

'Keep him talking. Extract whatever you can before... well, before any blood shed.'

" 'Novacaine', hm? The name my parents blessed me with is Nor'Eastern. We usually aren't so cold, but you must understand we don't get ANY guests out this far. So no, to answer your question, this isn't Agua Azul. Far from it actually. So tell me, what brings you out this far, Novacaine?"

His ears drooped the slightest to focus on the creature before him. Nor'Eastern would not jump to conclusions (any more) and allow Novacaine to make the first move. Nor would and could take him, if need be.

Poison dart frogs? What did they have to do with anything. "I wasn't planning on eating you," he said, with a tone that suggested he thought the green wolf was fully off his rocker.

But, well, whatever. He shook his head and allowed a long silence to lapse, his brilliant eyes inscrutable. "I was following a butterfly," he said, finally, as though this were a perfectly acceptable reason to come barging into someone else's territory, "And then I found the sand and realized I'd gone too far."
PostPosted: Wed Jun 08, 2011 10:50 pm

"Well then, what's keeping you here? I no longer see this 'butterfly' you speak of and you have no right to be trespassing in our wastelands. My father doesn't take kindly to uninvited guests, you see."

Nor'Eastern had made up his mind, he REALLY didn't like this other wolf. They were on totally different pages of the same book. He would not, could not take such lack-luster conversation much longer. All he'd managed to find out thus far was that this stranger, Novacaine, may know his family line.

"Wait..."

Something was pulling at his conscious. A weakness, a craving, a quiet murmur he dared not speak about even to his father. Nor's breath caught in his throat for a moment, did he reallly want to know? Before he knew it, he was spouting something out.

"You're from Agua Azul and I look familiar to you, right? Then tell me, have you ever... Do my brothers or sister still live there?"

"How should I know?" He asked, a bit put-out by this whole discussion. How bizarre. Were all wolves like this outside of his family? Fascinating! But dangerous, maybe. That just occurred to him, that he might be in danger.

But he wasn't the sort of wolf to be alarmed by that.

"...Oh!" He said, eyes widening and ears sweeping forward, registering as much surprise as he ever did. "Your sister. Is her name Stormkeeper, maybe? I know someone named that. She doesn't really look like you, but somehow she kind of does."

He wasn't trying to be infuriating. It just sort of came naturally to him.
