If a place on earth could be named Heaven, Shino would have definitely chosen the countryside just past the town he lived in. Miles upon miles of fields stretched as far as his eyes could see. There were no buildings, no people for miles, just the occasional abandoned shed or factory nestled amongst the corn. A single stretch of road cut through the sea of plants and it was this road that Shino traveled almost every weekend to visit his parents.

It was the beginning of fall and the corn had turned from bright green to a golden-yellow, contrasting boldly with the endless blue sky overhead. Strips of green bordered the road on either side, offering a sort of buffer zone between humanity and nature. Even the air felt different. It whipped around the car, smelling of hope and promises, whispering secrets in his ear. What they were, Shino couldn’t tell, but he still loved to listen.

Everywhere there was color and beauty, a feast for all the senses. The land seemed to flow about him, like poetry from a pretty girl’s lips. It was poetry. Everything flowed and meshed, giving off a feeling of peace and serenity as well as unrest and vigorous life. It felt like you could melt into the scenery and be reborn as something else. Just let it consume you and then nothing- and everything. It was one of those things that people can’t explain or just don’t want to.

Yes, for Shino, driving through the country was Heaven on earth. Nothing could go wrong on such a glorious day. It was impossible. Well, nothing is impossible, and that is exactly what Shino found out as he drove past one of the old abandoned factories that dotted the fields.

It was like any other old building on the outside, crumbling with a healthy coating of dust, cobwebs, and weeds. It was just sitting there, inconspicuous and unimportant, just part of the land.

Then it exploded.

It happened so fast that Shino slammed on his breaks and almost ran off the road. One minute everything was quiet and calm, the next a deafening crash from inside. All the rows of windows shattered into a billion glittering pieces, sparkling like diamonds as they fell to the ground. Enormous flames licked like tongues out of the empty frames, searching for more fodder. A tower of smoke wafted into the air and hung there like a warning to all who should be foolish enough to try and stop it.

Shino’s car had stopped in the ditch, hot and hissing its protest at his driving. Shino hopped out and stared at the massive fire that was consuming the building. It was like a scar, slowly spreading across his perfect world. Then he heard the screaming. Sharp as a blade it cut through the air, jabbing at his heart. People were inside.

Shino would never be able to say why he did what he did next. It was stupid and dangerous, but something lifted inside of him and he rushed toward the fire. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do once he got to the building, but he knew he had to get inside. It was a decision he would soon regret. He kicked wildly at the huge metal door barring his way in, not taking notice of the fact that the doors were much newer than the actual building and had no place being there. He finally got the door open and was assaulted by a wave of smoke that burned his eyes and throat. He put his sleeve up to his mouth and walked inside. What he saw would be burned into his memory.

Shino’s father had a saying, “For every Heaven on earth, there is a Hell.” Well this was Shino’s hell. Flames were everywhere, consuming all that was in their path, leaving nothing but charred remains and soot. An immense heat filled the space, choking out all the air and suffocating him. The light from the flames burned at Shino’s eyes as it danced in wretched harmony with the billowing black curtain of smoke above him. There was no escape from the destruction, the death. He stared in horrified awe of the spectacle, and it was only going to get worse.

Shino began making out the shapes of people through the flames. Well, what was left of people. There were only pieces left: arms, legs, clumps of hair. All were being slowly eaten away by the fire. The smell of burnt flesh swirled around him, making him want to gag. He tried to look away, but he only caught sight of the walls. Bits of flesh and innards clung in a demonic collage on the walls, blood sprayed about like a deathly Jackson Pollock. It was as if the people had exploded, being ripped apart from the inside, ending in a mosaic of gore.

Nausea overwhelmed Shino. He had to get out of there. The heat bore down on him, the smoke filling his lungs and strangling his insides. Darkness came at him from all sides, threatening to take him like the others. He staggered forward, praying the only prayer he knew, sure that he was going to die there in that God forsaken building. Everyone was dead, there was nothing he could do. He had rushed in for nothing.

Staring into the flames like a man possessed, he searched for something- anything- to comfort him. As he stared a form began to materialize within the fire. Shino squinted his eyes against the glare, wondering if his prayers had indeed been answered. His hope burned to ash as he saw that what he thought was his guarding angel was really an angel of death.

Indeed, that’s how she appeared. There in the midst of all the chaos and destruction stood a girl, no older than fifteen. She was completely naked, the flames already creeping up and claiming the gentle flesh of her arms and legs. The ends of her raven hair were on fire too, whipping around her shoulders in swirls of flame. Her ghostly pale skin was covered in soot and, while she stood there burning to death, she did not cry out. Instead, she stared out at the scene around her, seeming to welcome death as her world was drowned in fire.

It was easy to see why Shino had mistaken her for an angel of death, but what stood out in his mind the most were her eyes. He swore that they were sheer black like coal, endlessly deep, and had the effect of looking into his soul. Fear crept into his heart, worse than the fire that had begun to take him as well. She stared at him with the almost frightened expression of a deer caught in headlights, then whispered the words we have all thought at one point in our lives…

“Forgive me…”

It was barely audible, but the words rang in Shino’s ears like a siren. With that the girl raised a small, burning hand and exploded. Shino saw it all and could not even bring himself to flinch when the blood spattered on the floor in front of him. He finally gave into the delirium and utter hopelessness of the situation. He laid down and readied himself to be taken. Just before he lost consciousness, he heard the faint sound of sirens, then nothing.

He woke up in a room of blinding white light that made him squint his eyes. He put up his hand to stifle the brightness and noticed the lattice work of scars. The grimy color of his skin looked horrid against the white of the room. He was even dressed in white, laying on a white bed with white sheets. The extreme cleanliness of the room made him feel inferior and unwelcome. There was a faint smell of bleach and sterility that made his nose itch. Where was he?

Suddenly, a door that blended completely in with the walls opened and in walked a very burly man in a black suit that stood out in deep contrast to the room. He had an air of importance and hostility about him that sucked all the light out of the room. He sat down on a chair next to Shino’s bed, one Shino hadn’t noticed was there since it too was white. The man began asking questions in a stale, gruff voice, marking the answers on a small clipboard.

“What is your name?”

“Shino Yamamoto” was the shaky reply.

“How old are you?”

“Twenty-three.”

“What do you know of the Pyro-Kinetics program?”

“The what?” Shino was absolutely confused. He’d never heard of such a thing. And why was it important?

“So you have no idea of what was going on in that factory before the fire?”

“No. Why? What’s going on? Who was that girl? What happened to her? And the others? Who were those people?” Shino was becoming very distressed. What was going on? Images flooded his mind and he began to weep uncontrollably, the grief and horror weighing down on him like a car.

“Settle down, Mr. Yamamoto. Everything will be fine.” The suit got up and dug around in his pocket. He pulled out a large needle and inserted it into Shino’s arm. It stung terribly but was soon followed by a numbing sensation that swept its way over him.

“Wha…what was that?” His speech slurred, darkness creeping into the corners of his vision. Terror was replaced by an unsettling calm that was even scarier.

“Don’t worry,” The suit tried to reassure him, but it sounded more like an order. “It will all be fine. You won’t ever remember what happened. Just relax and let the serum do its work.”

“Who…are…you…people?” Shino whispered just as the last of the white was blotted out by blackness and he was pulled down by the vast current of dark that all must succumb to in the end. Shino Yamamoto was dead.

That was awesome! I loved the early description comparing the countryside to Heaven, very picturesque. I could see it in my mind.

Thanks. ^^
That was the first thing I wrote for my creative writing class two years ago. I had ideas to take the story further, but it kind of got put on the back burner.
I'm glad you liked it.
