I'm not certain of how to go into a grand detail, but from what I know...charcoal is usually focused on drawing the item in question through shading. So practice on drawing pictures through shading rather than plain lines.

Charcoal: you touch it once and it's all over everything. I recommend having a workspace away from anything you don't want to get dirty.
The videos here are really helpful. In general though charcoal is an easily smudged around surface so you probably won't draw much in the way of cartoons and such with it. It's very nice for figure drawing and life studies though. c:'
You can probably find a tons of use for it to fit what you'd like when you get the hang of it. Just play around and see what it does! best way to learn is through experimentation.

haha charcoal rocks!! its currently all over my walls cuz i had a hard time keeping tidy and now im too lazy to clean it up lol. ~but ya you might want to set up newspaper or sumtin under ur paper. ~the chamois clothes are a good for smearing the charcoal around and if its dirty enough you can even use it for smudging ~Erasers... i prefer pink pearl. its great for when ur doing charcoal erase (i love charcoal erase). id show u one but my art teacher was a big fan of the nude drawings lol so i dont think ill post one
