So the series has changed a lot over the years and, from what I can tell, has lost quite a bit of steam on its popularity. On the other hand, seeing as 2011 is getting a completely revolutionized approach to the series, we may soon see a flood of interest rush back into the franchise.
So, let us Brutality a dead horse and discuss what, at a time, may have been the most popular series around. At least of the fighting genre.
So, as a basic approach, try to answer a few of these:
Is MK better in 2D or 3D gameplay?
What is your favorite Mortal Kombat?
What is your least favorite Mortal Kombat?
Who is your favorite MK character?
Who is your least favorite character?
(Unfortunately, on the poll, I was only permitted ten options. Since those ten seem to be the most essential to me, I felt putting a 'Other' option would be alienating to the classics. So... no Khameleon, no Frost.)

There was already a topic for this series in the Playstation forum, but I'll just lock that one and let this one take over.
I've only played MK in 2D. Favorite character is Sub-Zero. Don't have any particular MK game that I like in general.

Mortal Combat was best in 2D. Gotta love the classics. My favorite character is Sub-Zero, however Reptile does have a cool Fatality.

I got to say MK is better in 3D because you can explore more of it which is pretty freakin kool.
Mine has to be Armageddon since it brought the whole cast of characters inculding a some more.
Mine has to be Armageddon since the story didn't add to the MK universe except something to Blaze
Kung Lao is my Fav
Blaze is an @$$!

I liked the 2D and 3D version. My favorite characters are Subzero and Sony Blade.

Sub-zero, all the way! 3nodding I played all the 2d Mortal Kombats, and I was never excited when the game went 3d.

My personal feedback...
Is MK better in 2D or 3D gameplay? -2D was far superior. Something was really lost when MK went 3D. I enjoy the Konquest modes in Deception and Armageddon, but the mechanics for the actual fighting were terrible. I actually felt Deception's normal modes were borderline unplayable. And why does everyone look cartoonish? I cannot stand the 3D art designs of MK.
What is your favorite Mortal Kombat? Trilogy. I had the most exposure to this one and it seemed to offer the most variety. Huge character roster with a lot of extras. I hear a lot of people say UMK3 is better, though.
What is your least favorite Mortal Kombat? Mortal Kombat 4. Not only did it mark the end of what I considered 'good Mortal Kombat', but it really just... sucked horribly. The new characters were boring and not worth using, Reptile got the worst make-over of anybody in the series, and the fatalities all sucked. Not to mention the graphics were mediocre at best. But this started the age of when MK really looked cartoonish and silly. The 2D games did too, in a campy way, but the CHARACTERS looked realistic.
Who is your favorite MK character? Not to be a broken record, but I always adored Sub-Zero. He represents my favorite element and he is the original badass. A lot of people prefer Scorpion, and I greatly respect him and admire him for being a perfect counterpart to Sub-Zero, but I just strongly personally prefer this ice god. But by that, I mostly mean CLASSIC Sub-Zero. I never liked his younger version.
Who is your least favorite character? Pretty much anybody introduced in MK4 or later. I am sure I am forgetting somebody I actually did not hate, but... with so many failures, I just do not care if I missed one.
