Quote:
DES MOINES, Iowa -An Iowa high school wrestler who was one of the favorites to win his weight class defaulted on his first-round state tournament match rather than face one of the first girls to ever qualify for the event.

Joel Northrup, a home-schooled sophomore who was 35-4 wrestling for Linn-Mar High this season, said in a statement that he doesn't feel it would be right for him to wrestle Cedar Falls freshman Cassy Herkelman. Herkelman, who was 20-13 entering the tournament, and fellow 112-pounder Ottumwa sophomore Megan Black, who was 25-13, made history by being the first girls to qualify for the state tournament. Black was pinned quickly in her opening round match.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan and their accomplishments. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times," wrote Northrup. "As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa."

There were several thousand fans on hand Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena, but many were watching other matches when the referee raised Herkelman's hand to signal her win. There was a smattering of cheers and boos from the crowd before Herkelman was whisked into the bowels of the arena.

Tournament organizers declined to make Herkelman available for questions. Her next match is Friday.

In a text message to The Associated Press, her father, Bill Herkelman, said he understands Northrup's decision.

"It's nice to get the first win and have her be on the way to the medal round," Bill Herkelman wrote. "I sincerely respect the decision of the Northrup family especially since it was made on the biggest stage in wrestling. I have heard nothing but good things about the Northrup family and hope Joel does very well the remainder of the tourney."

Linn-Mar athletics director Scott Mahmens said the school would not penalize Northrup for defaulting. Because he defaulted and didn't forfeit, Northrup is eligible to compete in consolation rounds. Black will also compete in the consolation rounds.

Wrestling is hugely popular in Iowa, and this is the first time girls have qualified for the state tournament, which began in 1926.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, just more than 6,000 girls competed in wrestling in 2009-10 — compared with nearly 275,000 boys. Though most states require girls to wrestle boys, California, Hawaii and Texas now sponsor girls-only high school wrestling tournaments.

Well that's just a bad situation for everyone.

He was most likely raised with "never hit a girl" drilled into his head and to wrestle her would go against his beliefs. She made it to the state tournament and didn't get prove herself because of her gender.

It's not like she can go to a girl-only tournament, there isn't one.

:/

This is something called "benevolent sexism," which is a lot more common nowadays than traditional/overt sexism (i.e., women shouldn't work/belong in the kitchen).

He doesn't see her as an equal. He sees her as a girl.

Guys shouldn't hit girls.
Guys shouldn't be hitting guys, either.

He has no problem wrestling guys, but as soon as a girl comes along, he's all worried about... What? Hurting her? Why doesn't he worry about hurting the guys he wrestles?

I think she's proven she can handle it, so what's he going by when he decides it wouldn't be fair? The fact that she's a girl, of course rolleyes

But oh well. It's his loss anyway. His sexist attitude is hurting himself more than her at least.

Kid thinks he's being chivalrous, he needs to get off his goddamn high horse and go for the win.

You never treat an opponent like anything else other than an opponent.

Don't let your guard down if it's a female, a dog, a cricket, or even a god damn grisly bear. You go into a fight with your all like you would with any other opponent.
In combat, that's all the two forces going against each other are, opponents. Equal grounded with their own strengths and their own mentalities fighting for the same goal, victory through physical exertion to see which is more powerful. They're both aware of the consequences at hand and they're both responsible for their own injuries.

This man has no honor, merely the guise of it through outdated sexist beliefs.
He's walking away a coward... it's a shame some people must be looking up to his decision.

I feel sorry for the girl. The boy shouldn't be chivalrous at this time and show her that she's a worthy opponent to go up against. I'd feel really disrespected if I was her (going through all that effort for the enemy to blow you off, if you know where I'm getting at) X_X;

I could fence a girl. I could use an actual rapier and skewer her and not have second thoughts.

But I couldn't wrestle one. That would require contact, possibly in ways that I'd ne'er feel comfortable with.

Oh hey, new idea, perhaps the guy just didn't want to pop a jolly while out on the field? lol

I wouldn't want this either, but venting that into strength shouldn't be difficult xd

This implies that you'd be comfortable having to be in rough physical contact with a guy. :/

I wouldn't reach in between anybody's legs while wrestling them. But with a woman, that's not the only area I wouldn't want to get too rough around.
I mean, she'd probably be fine with it if she was in a wrestling competition, but I'd still rather not. It's a cowardly portion o' m' character.

Are people seriously upset because he chose not to wrestle a girl?
It was a lose lose situation for him. He would either be known as the guy who beat up a girl, or the guy that got beaten up by a girl. He did the right thing imo.

Then again... it is a wrestling tournament... so.... Hmm.... Well maybe uhh...
damn... Idk since it is a wrestling tournament the girl knew what she was getting in to. So idk I would most likely wrestled her. Good way to break the ice at least, no?

How is that a lose-lose situation? ._.
It's not a lose-lose situation when the two outcomes are either winning or losing... XD

At a completive level, it's a win or lose situation.
But many social groups would consider a guy harming a girl as an immoral act. So within his family, among his friends or at his club (or any combination of these), he may have been at risk of disrespect or being looked down upon regardless of the outcome of such a fight.

Man if only I was a wrestler, and then I'd know what to say. Till then it's all competitive sport till someone breaks a neck or two.

Chivalry is overrated. As much as a guy tries to "respect" you, it can be utterly irritating if he avoids spending time with you because he "respects" you because of being scared of his OWN feelings. /rant
The guy in the article probably shouldn't have wussed out. Their egos are just... Rage.
