Apparently, there's been a lot of talk between Harbaugh and Smith.
With the CBA thing that might be dragged on forever, if it gets settled late... The Niners will have to get a QB in the draft or use one they had. Seeing as the one they have is David Carr.... They'll need to get a new rookie QB or resign Smith.
So hardcore rage right there... =/
Well.... Eh... Could do worse. He's a quality backup, but as a starter... Ugh...

Yeah, coach Harbaugh did say he has been talking with Smith and even went out and did some throwing with him. He mentioned that as the head coach he needs to observe any and all possibilities and potential Quarterbacks the 49ers can use next season.
There are many good QB's who want a trade, some who I think would be great in a 49ers uniform (Kevin Kolb) But with the potential lock out ruining the chances of the 49ers bringing in an additional QB from free agency or trade, they are limited in their options. They could land a really good sleeper in the draft, but due to the issues, we may end up with Alex Smith again next season. Could be worse though, our QB situation could be as bad as it is in Arizona, Carolina, or Miami.

With the NFL in full lock out and the possibility of games being lost in the regular season, team players have had to run their own training camps in the off season since the coaches cannot have any interaction with the player during the lock out.
Alex Smith may not be the QB of the future for the 49ers, but he has taken the initiative of trying to be the team leader for this season by running the team training camps. Smith received a copy of the playbook from Head Coach Jim Harbaugh during the few days the lockout was lifted and has been working with offensive players to get the team ready for when Football picks up again. Colin Kaepernick has also been attending these training camps, and since being drafted has spent a lot of time training with Andrew Luck, learning Harbaugh's offensive system to get a jump on the system.
Some members of the team including Michael Crabtree has expressed their doubts about Smith. And though I believe Smith isn't the QB of the future, he is a better option at QB than what most other teams have, and I have no issues letting him play a while longer til Kaepernick is ready to play. I just hope that time is sooner rather than later.
