How It Works
Currently a mare will go to a special cavern located in the mountains when she is ready to mate. There is a truce there that no violence between any species can take place, as it is their future that is within the caves. Inside the caverns the walls and floors are littered with crystals of all shapes and sizes. There is also several fields of crystals under the lake, ranging in size from small to large. These are known as the spawning grounds, and those with the most crystals have the ability to produce more foals, and are highly fought over.
The mare will find a crystal she likes either for color, shape, or both, pluck it gently from the stone, and eat it, which tastes much like rock candy and crunches about the same way. She can then journey back to her mate, and they can conceive a foal together. Without this step, any previous attempts would be in vain. A mare can conceive up to three foals, though sometimes, on rare occasions, she may also have a fourth foal as well. The foals generally take on the color, and shape, of the crystal that was taken.
This is only different for the Trybith and Tesharak. For those two, it is the male that goes to the cavern to eat the crystals, and thus starts their rut cycle, which can last three or four days. The females need not journey to the caves at all, but merely find a male who has journeyed to the caverns. Males can actually mate with two or three females, though all may not be successful, and only counts as one breeding towards their count.
