There is a colored pencil drawing of an apple on a stool in my basement. It is framed, and has my name on the back in black washable marker. I did not make it, though I think I told my parents that. I had seen it at my childhood after-school day care, and decided I wanted it; I was a child who liked to just take things if they weren't being watched or with any other sort of belonging. Now, years later, whenever my dad brings it up, I feel guilty since it's never been my own creation.
Now, for the questions. Should I just say that it was made for me, but I wrote my name on the back? Should I tell my parents that I just found it and took it home? (aka the hard truth?) Should I just take it down and hide it? and when anyone asks, use one of the two above excuses? Should I just feign amnesia?
This guilt has kind of accumulated since it happened so long ago, but now that I'm a teen, I feel that my parents would be even more upset since I didn't tell them earlier. I would really appreciate any sort of helpful advice.

Truth is always best, but there's no need to tell it unless you have to.
I'd say hold it until you can't take it anymore.

Honesty is the best policy. Lying gets you nowhere.
Guilt is a horrible thing that never goes away until you let it go. Just tell the truth, you'll probably have to deal with some crap but, still...it's better then letting it rot and fester.
It happened so long ago, I doubt your parents would be upset, especially if you tell them how much it eats you up inside.

There's nothing wrong with lying, in and of itself, so long as you lie to the right people for the right reasons... But lying to enlarge yourself in the eyes of your parents over false artistic creations that aren't yours is a completely unacceptable lie. You don't have to tell the truth. You'll just receive no further advice or respect from me (and perhaps others) if you don't. It's bad enough not being able to return it. Perhaps you put that kid off of art, forever, by stealing it from him/her at so young an age.

[Edit] When I was younger I was a huge fan of Sonic and because of this I drew Sonic pictures left and right, all very good. My whole Sonic sketchbook was stolen and I didn't stop drawing, the only difference were that I stopped drawing Sonic which in turn was actually a somewhat good thing.

pirulaso Well if your parents are anything like mine, they'll probably think that's hilarious and take pity that its been eating you all these years My parents would do the same thng as this. I've told them about something that has happened years and years ago, and then they just laugh it off. I highly doubt that your parents are going to be upset or anything if you just tell them.
