Butterfree
Did you know? Butterfree and Beautifly share the same pokemon classification, the Butterfly pokemon.
Butterfree, huh? Interesting choice from the random generator this week. Well, lets see what I can do... Also, if this PotW feels a bit strained, I apologize in advance: I'm up at 1:45 a.m. making this PotW for lack of a better thing to do. Anyway, we should probably start by taking a look at the base stats:
HP 60 Atk 45 Def 50 SpA 80 SpD 80 Spe 70
Not the best stats around. It's not hard to see that this pokemon belongs in the NU tier. But hey, some people *cough*Roy*cough* enjoy those NU pokemon. Besides, it's always better to play with pokemon you like over pokemon that are strong. So, lets look at what can be done to keep this little bug away from the bug zapper. Starting off with some of the positive assets on Butterfree in 3...2...1...
Status changes: Stun Powder, Poisonpowder, Sleep Powder... Three moves right there. Your choice: Sleep to make them miss a couple turns, Poison to chip at their HP, and Paralysis to make them slower. Oh wait... these moves have a 75% accuracy. But, lets not forget about Butterfree's ability, Compound Eyes. This ability raises the pokemon's accuracy by 30%, bringing the accuracy of these moves up to 97.5%. Miss with those odds, and the game probably just hates you.
STAB U-turn: Now, you know, I don't really like bugs that much. Or bug type moves. However, U-Turn is a great move for any lead, and my Infernape knows it. However, Butterfree boasts STAB U-turn, while Brisingr does not. Do damage AND switch out in the same turn? Yes please.
Now, some of the things that make sure this guy stays in the NU tier.
4x weakness to Stealth Rock: Ouch... those pointed stones hurt. They hurt my team a lot, especially Din, my Charizard. Charizard and Butterfree have the same resistance to Stealth Rock, and by same resistance I mean no resistance at all. Serious damage, make sure to spin these away if possible.
Poor stats: Yeeeeaaaaah... it's not that great of a pokemon. Statwise, it kinda sucks. And it doesn't even make up for that by having an awesome movepool. Sheesh, Gamefreak must play favorites with pokemon or something, giving some pokemon good stats and others bad ones. Butterfree is the kid that they stuffed in the closet and fed bread and water to for 18 years while Dragonite lived on steak and whatever else it wanted.
Sooo... Butterfree. Speaking in metagame terms... you should pick something else. Unless you want an NU status inducer, then by all means, use Butterfree. Other than that, it's probably better off just used as food for Snappy's birds.

It's got a pretty decent Special Attack stat, so Butterfly Dance and Bug Buzz backed by a Petaya Berry wouldn't be too bad.
Snappy's bird food. XD

Butterfree was given crap stats because he was meant to only be used in the beguinning, something that evolved quickly and was able to carry you through the beguinning until you got better stuff... compared to other fully evolved pokemon, it sucks, but compared to other 1st stagers, its stats are amazing.
there are butterfree's of every gen emo
but, like you said, 97.5% acc sleep powder is why butterfre is used, the only reason, it can sleep anything that isn't scarf'd if your scarf it ^.^
like you said, stab u-turn is usefull ^.^ and after I've used it for its sleep powder, I have brought it back out as a revenge killer with stab bug buzz.
his usefull ness is limited, and hindered by stealth rock, but over all, he does have a niche 3nodding
good job rol, covered everything there is to cover about this guy XD that why he's not used much, cause its SOOOOO predictable, having only 1 valid use sweatdrop
@Raiu: butterfly dance is in gen 5, but I dont expect it to help her out to much, she has to survive an attack to get the dance up. and after that it'll be easy to take it out with bullet punch and aqua gets, or even extreme speeds.

Who would've thought Butterfree was the Butterfly pokemon?! It's pure genius!!!
I use butterfree as an NU lead. Great for sleeping, then switching to something that can lay entry hazards.

I love Butterfree! twisted No really, I do. I've never used one, and I'm not a big fan of bug types, but there was an episode of Pokemon where Ash lets his Butterfree ..free, and I was little and my personality says that if a video or a movie makes an emotional connection, then it's usually a good one. Being so little when I watched that It made me want to cry. xD Just like the "Pikachu's Goodbye" episode... I love that one to this day. Besides, Pikachu is so cute, and there are tons of 'em in that episode. lol But yeah, I've always liked Butterfree... (They are cute too. lol)
I will say I know all about the 4x weakness to Stealth Rocks... But when all of your Pokemon have at LEAST a 2x weakness to the move, it's not cool then either. lol Over time I found my way around it.
