Are you taking in fact of George Washington's knowledge of Rome? George Washington possibly did not know much of Rome. Not to mention that the bases, worl-wide trades, and other things have been established by years. Not by George Washington. Our position of Canada is considered an accident considering our presence here was all by accident.
We are pretty much a lucky bunch with a large, great territory and position combined with our peaceful years here to take documents and other things from time to combine them into one document: The US Constitution. It all started from the Magna Carta and going on from there.

Actually our second amendment suggests otherwise. Back when the constitution was written, the US was very poor. We did not have an army and anyone could walk through us. This is why we have the second amendment. So that we can have a standing militia in case of invasion. That is why we were able to hold our own in the war of 1812.

And then you have to consider the overwhelming isolationist attitude that existed for forever, and is still relatively strong today. It's not until the past few decades that our fingers start getting in a ton of pies. Used to be only a few pies. We're close to Canada because this is where Britain decided to set up a bunch of colonies. George Washington had nothing to do with that.

Our country was modeled a bit after the Roman Empire and the success' of the European Colonies, with a Constitutional Republic. It's more watched over and more regulated but still has loopholes and flaws of any Empire or Nation. It was to be cut short too. Even the founding father's knew it's children would wake up in poverty because of the implications of the temptation to Greed/Power. It wasn't made to be satiated.
