[I've posted this on facebook and twitter, so please forgive me if you're seeing this again. I just thought I should share some happy news with the guild since I think the last thread I made here was not-so-happy.]

On Friday, I received a letter informing me that I made the Dean's List at my school for Fall 2010! I'm still super excited because I completely forgot that even my college has a Dean's List and a President's List, so I was just taking my great marks (3.3 in Astronomy, 4.0 in Mythology, & 4.0 in Shakespeare) as reward enough for my hard work.

For those of you not aware of what a Dean's List or President's List is, it's like an honour roll. At my school, the Dean's List is quarterly and students with a 3.5 - 3.89 GPA at the end of the quarter (and were taking at least 15 credits, a full-time course load) are eligible for inclusion. (Also at my school, a 3.9 GPA or higher for the quarter makes a student eligible for the President's List, if they were a full-time student for the quarter. These can vary by school, though.)

This quarter, Winter 2011, is my last quarter at my current school. I'm applying for graduation this week and I couldn't be more nervous and excited because I'd really like to make the Dean's List again.

So, APG, how do you feel about honours lists like these? Have you ever made it to an honours list? Will you dance with me while I do stats and physics homework?

CONGRATS!
I myself didn't do hot in high school at first. Like... I did well in elementary school and got lazy in high school. I didn't make it onto the honor roll until my last year... the reason why?
Because they made an honor roll honorable mention for those who got 70-80% Kind of like a 'you didn't do as good but keep trying' thing.
I found it to be utterly humiliating.
And so I worked harder and got far better marks. Graduated with an 89% and got an entry scholarship.

But then I kind of... repeated the same thing. laptops are distracting. So this year i don't even open my laptop in lectures anymore because I realize I won't retain anything. I significantly improved since this last midterm and got a congrats from the head of my faculty for my improvement because he was impressed. <3
Dean's list, here I come >8D

Congrats! biggrin

I was on my school's dean list for a long time until some health problems came along and ya... now I'm not. But I want to return before I graduate, so I need to work super hard! I think at one time I was even in National... Hm...

D; Oh gawd I feel so lazy. I have really slacked off.

= 3 = Despite all that hard work though I never got one scholarship or any help with college and I think that's one of the reasons why I kinda gave up trying so hard...... poo.

:') Anywho. Good job!! I'm proud of you! *dances with you*

Did shitty in high school, not quite so bad in Grade 12, but still not great. I really think that by that time, I was getting really sick of the academics. By university, where I was so hopeful for a change of pace in a computer science programs, I was completely disappointed when I found out that it was way more science than it was computers. By that time, I had completely had it with academics, mathematics, sciences. I just didn't care about them anymore. Didn't see the point. I didn't want to be an expert in my field. I just wanted to make a living doing something that I love.

After dropping out of university, I took a college program in Computer Networking. A year and a half later, I have a co-op position in the IT department at the Financial Services Commission of Ontario in North York, and I really enjoy it. I feel really lucky to have the opportunity to get work experience there, I get to live in Toronto, which is awesome compared to living in a shitty small town, and I don't spend all day at work lamenting about how terrible my job is. Honestly, dropping out of university was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Honour rolls and Dean's Lists are great, and worthy of congratulations. It takes a lot of hard work, and it's definitely an achievement. That being said, getting on the honour roll is a measure of effort, and nothing more. Honour rolls are not a measure of integrity, nor morality, nor success in life, nor happiness. There are a lot more important things in life to worry about, and I'm glad I realized that when I did.

Congratulations! That's fantastic. It's always good to get some recognition for hard work. I got Dean's List as well for this past semester and, even though I've gotten it every semester except one, it still felt really good, particularly because last semester was rough academically.

I agree with you and have definitely realised this awhile ago and thank you for the congratulations; just wanted to share some good news with the guild since the last thread I made was about some heavy s**t going down regarding my medical issues. Realising last year what you mentioned at the end of your post is part of what has made me feel not so shitty about going to a community college first instead of straight into university like the rest of my graduating class. (The other part is seeing how many of them dropped out because it wasn't as "easy" or they couldn't pay for it like they thought they could and are now at a community college with me and have to start almost all over. But, that's schaudenfraude and that's horrible.)

@Demon: Thank you.
@Persephone: Thank you~ I've never been part of an honour society, but I'll probably get invited to Phi Theta Kappa if I remain on the Dean's List this quarter. If that happens, I will laugh so hard.
@Hisaki: I can definitely relate to that. Ever since my freshman year of college (and last half of my senior year of high school), I've been hospitalised on and off for different medical issues. The only difference between us, based on how I'm reading your post, is that I have a scholarship that is dependant on my GPA being at a certain level and also dependant on me being a full-time student. I don't have any financial help from the folks or government aid, so I really need this scholarship.
@Grimm: Thank you~

*O* I would love to take a class on Mythology.

Congrats on getting on the dean's list~

I hope I can do as well this semester; I'm taking accounting, honors philosophy, Japanese, and political science.

I had a reading to do for philosophy and I had NO IDEA as to what it said. I'm not so great at philosophy--at least, not ancient Greek philosophy. I'm better at the whole debating thing, but only if it's written down or something. I'm really shy and hate public speaking. D:

I've taken a couple of classes on Mythology and loved both of them. (This one actually applied to my degree, haha.) Thanks lovely. ~

I'm cheering you on for this semester! What kind of PoliSci class are you taking? (I took an Intro to International Affairs course last year and loved it. The prof was so awesome.) If you like, I can try and help you with your philosophy class. (Though, I haven't actually taken a philosophy class, I've just read a lot and other classes I've taken have had sections that have dealt with Greek philosophers. Depending on what you need help with, I might even be able to get the material from my work and try to read along.)

I'm the opposite when it comes to stuff like that; I'm a horrible writer, but being in theatre from the age of 3 has beaten the shyness out of me. It has confounded all of my literature professors. I can discuss a book and beat the horse until it's dead, but make me write about it and... yeah. Doesn't happen as planned. lol
