I am 13, and a Girl Scout of the Penn Lakes Council.

And damn pround.

But I've noticed that Girl Scouts are only known for their cookies.

And Boy Scouts for their community service.

People don't realize all the good stuff we do, too! I mean, just yesterday my troop made baby blankets for needy babies!

All the Boy Scouts do is clean up litter.

Girl Scouts have pride in being girls, and we can be tough and girly and act like morons all in the same day.

All the boys do is act like morons 24/7 and say how much better they are.

AT LEAST WE CAN SEW AND USE SEWING MACHINES WITHOUT CUTTING OUR FINGERS OFF.

Discuss how boy scouts are the 'real' scouts.

And discuss how awesome we are. 8D

i think boy and girl scouts are cool because it's a place to make friends and do some cool s**t. but in girl scouts it's like you're stuck perpetuating stereotypical woman-ish roles like cooking, sewing, etc. it's the same with the boy scouts. they go camping, learn about knives and stuff. both of these are totally perpetuating gender stereotypes and just drilling them into the heads of little kids who are there because their parents didn't feel like babysitting. plus there's that whole "no gay boy scout" thing which just pisses me off. raah.

Exactly. I was in Girl Scouts when I was 10 and I quit. When my group leaders asked why I told them how I hated being potrayed in a 'femminine' steriotype and how I think they're opressing these girls by teaching them things that are 'girly' alone. They were kinda shocked xd

I was also in the girl scouts but only because my mom didn't want me to join the boy scouts even though girls have. My guy cousins who I grew up with were all in it. I used to attend some of their meetings. My favorite was when they made drag model racing cars. I love mechanics so naturally I wanted to join. However, observing the boyscouts through the years I have seen they not only pick up litter, they rebuild and repair national parks. I don't really care about national parks or the boy scouts anymore because I don't like nature too well or a cult society (which I believe the boy scouts to be). The interests in the two organizations are definetly different, but the cookies in relation to the girls scouts shouldn't totally be considered an insult. Look at the boy scout conterpart of the cookie..........popcorn. How many people do you know buy boyscout popcorn. This proves that in some aspects the boy scouts are behind the girlscouts.

I was a girl scout and my mom was a troop leader for some time. We did sewing but we also did various crafts and learned a lot about nature and living out in the wilderness. I don't think the scouts stick to gender stereotypes much anymore...they didn't seem to back in the 80s and I'm sure they made a lot of progress since then. They seem to be all about the girl power these days!

It depends on the troop leader. My troop leader was an awsome, amazing woman who I really look up to, but we never went camping because she didn't like it. XD

I was a Girl Guide (Canadian Equivilent)...
The whole thing started when Lord Baden-Powell wanted to start up a program for boys to teach them life lessons, but girls showed up too. He thought it was inappropriate for girls to attend a session aimed at teaching boys to grow up manly so he asked his wife to take them.
Her aim was to actually do EVERYTHING the boys did, but also incorporate cooking and sewing, etc, to produce more wellrounded girls.
I think it's really unfair that people say that Guides are sexist, because when I was in it we were encouraged to try out whatever came to mind.

Just going over my old book, I got Buisness Communications, Baker, Explorer, Fire Safety/First Aid, Forestry, Folklore, Hostess, Intrerpreter, Law Awarness, Outdoor Cook, Pet Keeper, Reader, Singer, Skater, Snowshoer, Skier, and World Guilding, to name a few.

Obviously, they aren't limited to just cooking and sewing (which my brother, a scout, also had to do)
