Long story short, one of my aunts is planning a trip to Japan in late March and wants to take me, my sister, and my mom with her. Now I'm aware of the general etiquette rules there, but what if, say, I forget to bow when saying thank you to someone or something? Will I be judged for that? Also, has anyone here gone through Japan through Amnet? If so, how good is that company? My aunt wants to go to Japan through that particular company, and I want to know the pros and cons of it. Lastly, because I'm a vegetarian, how do I politely refuse meat if it is given to me and explain at the same time that I'm vegetarian?

Hey.... I have been to Japan in the past 6 months. I did I home-stay for 2 months. It is a very good experience. I do not know anything about the company that you are speaking of.

The natives will know that you are not from there, and bowing is not expected, but respect is. I simple head nod with eyes looking down and not directly at the person is fail-safe.

As far as being a vegetarian here are the two options....

A. If you are just a vegetarian and don't eat meat, but eat fish you will be fine Just learn basic vocabulary. Check the guild's LEARNING JAPANESE sub-form for plenty of options.

B. If you a vegan and only have tofu, then it will be more difficult. You will be having lots of fruit juice and tea.

Keep us posted!

Actually, I'm a vegetarian and don't eat meat or fish. I do eat eggs and dairy, though.

And I already know about the equivalent of 2 1/2 to 3 year's worth of university level Japanese (though my speaking skills is rusty and needs a lot of practice), so vocabulary isn't much of a problem for me.

Then you should be fine. I don't have that many years. But if you eat egg then that and tofu will be your main source of protein. I did have milk with my cereal, but I never really ate cheese very much. Ganbatte!

Ugh, turns out my mom's just going to Japan alone with her sister. -_-; Now I'm extremely disappointed. Neither of them know any Japanese, so they're going with a tour group that has an English-speaking tour guide, which to me doesn't sound very exciting at all (which is part of the reason why I'm learning Japanese. So I can get around Japan without a tour guide).

I am sorry that you are not able to go. If you do want to go would look into doing a homestay for about a week. I used a service called HOMESTAY IN JAPAN, and was very pleased. I hope you get to visit the land of rising sun soon.

Let me just say... Don't knock the English tour! I know Japanese perfectly well enough to get around on my own, but I still loved going on a few half-day tours. I learned so much about the places we visited and got to see a lot of places that I wouldn't have been able to visit at all otherwise.

Of course, it was also fun to explore on my own. I think a combination of taking a few tours and doing some exploration on your own is the best of both worlds.

Anyway, I'm sorry you're not going to get to go this time. There are schools and scholarships out there, so hopefully you can find another way to get there!
