If I didn't have a kerosene lantern I would definitely say light as it allows you to be productive after nightfall and also provides comfort and security. Since I do have one, however, I would chose to power a rechargeable car battery jumper as you can power just about any average sized electronic like air pumps, hair dryers, lights, etc. It is also portable so you can use it indoors, outdoors, at your neighbor's, wherever. Not to mention it's nice for it's intended use as well if you happen to need a jump for your car.

Oh and if I had to imagine life completely off the grid I would have to say it would probably be complete and utter hell. My dad lived a lot of his life nearly totally off the grid on the edge of the Big Thickets in Texas with an out house, hand water pump, no electricity except for lights run on a car battery, coal and wood burning stove, hunting fishing and gigging for his meals, the works. The only thing him and his dad ever actually bought was canned food for emergency food storage, rice, potatoes, the occasional veg, salt for curing, bullets, tools, etc. My dad's told me all about that kind of lifestyle and while I would enjoy living half off the grid I definitely would never want to have to endure life totally without modern conveniences. The thought of living without AC, especially in the area I live, is just unthinkable. Perhaps letting go of those types of things would be easier in a milder climate but it is not an idea I am even willing to entertain.

I would choose my computer, too. It is really the only piece of technology I use.

I would say my computer since ou can get so much information from it. But then I would really need my cell phone for emergencies and general contact. So my phone.

Laptop.

I do so much research on the laptop and I like to go on online communities like Gaia.

Just one thing? Probably a refrigerator. That is probably the single most useful-for-life piece of technology in my house.

That, or my cell phone. In reference to what We Are Organisms said, I think the general idea is powering only one thing *of your own.* Let the phone company worry about powering the cell towers. XP

Oh wow I'm allowed to participate even though I'm not a member! biggrin SWEET!
Well if I could only power one thing it would probably be an LED light setup for my house so that I could be productive after dark. That or my laptop.

In reference to what We Are Organisms said I'd be using my laptop for music and entertainment that is already on it. Though I do realize that my cell phone would probably be a better option now that I've thought longer even if it doesn't offer me any sort of comfort outside of calling people who are on the grid.

I read a great article about renewable energy in Africa yesterday which left me wondering about what life would be like completely off the grid. What did you think of the article? If you could only power 1 thing, what would it be?

What a fantastic article! So many interesting aspects that I'm speechless. I think it's impossible for us to answer that question because rural sub Saharan culture is so different from American culture. That kind of poverty is completly hypothetical to us. The americans who live in similar conditions do it by philosophical choice & can chose to cease living like that whenever they want. I'm just grateful the entrepreneurs mentioned in the article who are familiar with their culture are able to be so successful!
