I think that you should encourage the use of mnemonic devices, system of associations. For example:
We can remember the word viejo with an image of VA doctor trying to use a hoe to plow a field.
Not the best example, but I hope you understand the gist of what I am trying to say.

but yes, I do understand what you're getting at. Like 18th Amendment said you can't drink alcohol (18 years...) and the 21st allows it again (21 years...)
