I know the usual shtick about having kids make their own valentines for people, but I'm wondering about other ways to make kids feel special and included on a holiday that is, essentially, for sweethearts - and probably means Mommy and Daddy are going out on a date that evening. Not to mention, Lucien likes to *sign* cards, but doesn't give a fig about crafts. I figure somebody else must have some good ideas to make the holiday a special one...we didn't celebrate V-Day in our house growing up, so I'm at a bit of a loss, aside from going hog-wild with heart shaped meals, etc. (My brother died 32 years ago on Feb. 13th, that's why we all got kind of quiet, and usually sick, around that time of year. Long story. Yes, I'm fine with it.)

well, I don't have kids yet, but my family did celebrate valentines day. Every year my parents would each take us to the store to pick out a card for the other parent that was just from us. Our parents usually paid for them still since we didn't really have an allowance or anything. We usually drew pictures on the blank side of the card and scribbled whatever words we could to tell them we loved them. Then on Valentine's morning, my dad would get up extra early and go to the grocery store. He usually bought my mom a potted flower and bought us a little heart box of candy. Once my sister and I got to be about 4th or 5th grade, he bought us each a long stem rose. I always thought it was really sweet cause my dad doesn't usually do that kind of stuff! whee
When I was in my senior year of high school... my long term boyfriend of a year and half broke up with me on Jan 31... two weeks before v-day. I was really upset about and my mom was really worried about me. So that morning when I woke up, I had the usual card and rose from my dad and then another card from my mom with a really sweet treat... she took one of those tubes of mini m&m's and made a pretend perscription label for it that said "Chill Pills, Perscribed by: Dr. Mom, Directions: Take 1 as needed for heart ache pains, Refils: for as long as you need them!" It was so sweet!
Hope that gets everyone's creative juices flowing... just remember, you don't have to do something really big for it to be really special and meaningful! heart HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! heart

I can't say that I really remember a LOT about v-day growing up. I vaguely remember making valentines for my grandparents. I remember one year my mom helped us make them with popsicle stick frames. Just the four stick glued together and some silk flowers (small ones) and a little ribbon bow at the bottom; so the frame hung more like a diamond than a square. Then the "frame" was glued to a piece of paper that was cut to size. We were allowed to color the popsicle sticks if we wanted, and we of course got to draw a picture and write a message for the grandparents. Of course the flowers were actually added on last (so as not to get in the way of the coloring and writing) and I believe that they were hot glued.
I remember a few times when my dad brought home roses for my mom he would buy each of us girls a carnation bud vase, but I can't remember if that was valentines or not.
Yvaine: My little one also loves to sign cards, but she's too young to really make them. She loves Hello Kitty though, so we bought her a box of valentines from the store that she can sign and give to... well whoever we figure out to send them to.

It's rather silly... but a fond memory none-the-less! My Mom used to make us colored pancakes for holidays. For V-day she would shape them like hearts and make the batter pink and red whee heart

Thanks for the suggestions! So far we've gotten pix taken, and Lucien's going to sign the cards they go in. I also found heart-shaped peeps, so I figure on making some special V-day cocoa. I'm going to order him some Jelly Bellies today as well (our house features allergies to dairy and soy, so most chocolate is out...). His favorite color is pink, so that works out. 3nodding He had some heart stickers yesterday, but...they're mostly all over the house by now. I actually even went to my local discount home store and bought V-day towels for the bathroom! sweatdrop If I have time, I think I'll make a big heart-shaped loaf of cornbread - it's his favorite thing I bake. I think cornbread and hot dogs for lunch might seal it as the best holiday ever for him!
