Makoto had found a perfect spot under a lightly shady tree to read her newest book about indigenous tribes of the Serengeti, a pile of books waited quietly beside her for their turn in her paws, she had learned to speed read a few years back but had never really enjoyed reading so much as when she took her time with it, getting to know the book like an old friend the feel of its spine in her paws the crispness of the pages, the smell of freshly pressed paper and ink, the words spinning tapestries of knowledge in her head. The sun light danced on the pages and it dodged the leaves of the tree creating patterns like water, as thought the sun itself were trying to bring moisture to the life in the Serengeti through the books pages.
She smiled her tails flicking idly as she lay there book in paw, a beautiful quiet day perfect for reading, she never got enough of reading her books, the Serengeti within this book warmed the sun on her fur made the snow feel like sand and the birds sound like tribal chants, she had no magical powers like other kitsus but she didn't care, the magic of books is all she needs, she even began to hum along with the chants of the tribes within her book

Humming.
There was humming?
Why was there humming?
Lucent blinked his golden eyes open a bit blearily and peered out into the daylight away from the shadows beneath his piece of scrub. Well, not his, but he was using it for now. He could make out... something? Pink, green, white. It moved. Tails. There was a someone!
He'd not really had much experience with someones aside from his family and "uncle" Chaos, so he was fairly socially inept, but even if he'd realized this he would probably not care. Not much, at least. So instead of a proper greeting, the half-breed Heartless melted partway into the shadows and slunk over to the tree, attempting to peek around the trunk for some clues as to what precisely she was up to.

The book had a few photos of the tribes people beautiful full page photos showing a dry monotone landscape contrasted by it's people with vibrant colorful bead work clothing and body paint, as bright and colorful as many kitsu, she wondered if they had kitsu there, there had been no mention of kitsu but she couldn't imagine any place without kitsu, perhaps they were in another chapter or book? The kitsu of the Serengeti, she smiled, it had a nice ring to it she thought. She stared at the photo for a while, she wasn't normally one for books with photos as they tended to be distractful, she liked this one, she could almost see the people move in it, and over there in the corner was that... was that a kitsu?! She strained her eyes trying to decipher the half hidden form no not a kitsu, she sighed, just a dog.
She hadn't yet noticed the shadow that had been cast on her, too absorbed in her book, but a crick in her neck required adjusting and when she shifted to a more comfortable position she about fell over in shock
"Ahhh!!" she panted her eyes wide where did he come from? "Where did you come from?!" and when did he get here? She had expected to be alone out here, not find some eyes peeping out at her from behind the tree "You're not a peeping tom are you?" She was very glad she didn't have a skirt on to worry about or a low cut neckline like some kitsu, still she felt like she needed to cover up more at this moment, she didn't really know what to say either, she had such a large vocabulary in her head but she never seemed to be able to articulate what she wanted to in social situations

He was not quite so fascinated with the book as she was, but it was an intriguing thing. He'd never seen such a funny thing before, that had white leaves with pictures and odd little markings on it. Then the book went flying, and very nearly the she-kitsu went with it. Why did she throw the book?
There was a slow moment as Lucent tilted his head at Makoto's startled yell and then finally lifted a shimmering paw, still half-faded into a white shadow-smoke, to point back at the bush he'd been napping beneath. It was the answer to her first question, at least. Another moment passed before his brow furrowed in confusion. -Peeping... Tom? My name is Lucent, not Tom.-
The voice sounded a pleasant, musical sort of baritone... but it was made at least as disconcerting as his appearance by the fact that he never opened his mouth to speak. It was sent directly to the mind of the intended recipient, and was the manner in which both of his parents typically spoke. Seeing as he was physically more Heartless than not, he didn't actually have lungs or vocal chords TO speak normally with.
It also seemed rather apparent that the fact that he had frightened Makoto, or why she would feel the need to be afraid, had not really registered. -Why were you humming?-

"I... hu... wha-..." She was still in shock over his unexpected appearance and now he seemed... seemed... what? Kinda innocent and creepy at the same time, she didn't know what to make of him. Now that the initial shock had worn off she was able to collect herself a little better, he really did seem rather kit like. She tried to smile at him but her nerves made the attempt weak, she tried again
"Lucent, I'm Makoto.. it's uhh.. nice to meet you" she faultered... this was awkward what do you say in this situation. "Do.. do you like books?"
She picked up the book that had gotten tossed in her surprise and dusted off the snow on the pages, her face twisted in disappointment the pages has gotten wet and they were going to curl, she gave a heavy sigh, she hadn't even finished reading it yet, her ears drooped as she it closed the book and placed it under the others hopping their weight would press the book down enough to keep it from being ruined. She looked up at Lucent, still unsure what to say... she opened her mouth to say something but closed it again wordless

Innocent? Yes, that was a good word for Lucent. Innocent, but not naive. He was just rather... literal, and a bit clueless about personal interaction and emotional responses. And socially acceptable behavior. THAT one was blatantly obvious.
-Makoto.- He repeated her name curiously, seemingly testing it for something, though what that was only he knew. Or perhaps he didn't. He watched her handle the book before he responded further, obviously intrigued by the way she was acting. -You don't have to lie. You don't seem pleased to see me.- A pause. -That is a... book? My father told me about them, but I have never seen one before.-
He leaned down to examine the stack of books, squinting a bit as though he couldn't quite see them properly. And really he couldn't; he had a peculiar mix of his parents genes there, as well. In bright light he could make out colors and general shapes, but no real details. In the dark he could make out the tiniest nuance of pattern, but no colors. He had a sort of happy medium in dim lighting, a point where neither side was perfectly clear but neither was it entirely blurry, but he rarely encountered such lighting when the desire to see better was actually with him. It made him even more curious about the books, and what might be in them, but this was hardly a good place for HIM to get a look. -You should take it somewhere dryer. It will take a long time out here in the cold.-

Makoto felt a ping of guilt she hadn't meant it like that, but she supposed it could have sounded that way, and he really did seem nice..
"I didn't mean..." she cut off, this was why she prefered her books, there could be no mistaking the meaning of things unless you didn't know the word and then you always had a dictionary, social encounters were so much more complicated.
"You just surprised me is all, I wasn't really expecting any company, but you're right I probably should go inside" She glanced up at the sky, the sun was already getting low in the sky, she hadn't realized how long she had been out here. "You could join me if you'd like" a smile this time an honest and warm one made it across her face. She handed him the top book in her pile, and old favorite, cover worn thin in places from use, the spine having been broken in years ago so that it had the flexibility of a slinky.
"No one should ever go without reading at least one book in their lives, they are wonderful things, this is one of my favorites...." She paused, she didn't know if he could read or not but she certainly wasn't going to let him miss out on the wonders of books if he could! "you could borrow it if you'd like" and if he couldn't read? a little voice popped into her head and said, and guilt struck again, she shouldn't assume everyone was as lucky as she had been... and now that she was thinking about it he did seem to have trouble focusing his eyes... should she offer to read it to him?
Awkward Awkward Awkward! How do you offer something like that and not have it come across as an insult? She looked at him and back to the book not sure what to do, just wait she told herself, see what he says first, no use sticking your foot in your mouth if you can avoid it!

-You meant it as a greeting, an adjustment to your initial response to my presence. You were not, however, pleased to see me at our actual point of meeting. But it is better now, I think?- Apparently the fright he'd given her at first hadn't been as completely lost as it first appeared, though it still didn't seem to have made much of an impact on him. Not nearly as much as it had made on her, at any rate.
He shrugged lightly and proceeded to take the book from her for further examination, his paws solidifying back into their normal shapes even as he lifted them. He ran his paws carefully over the cover, then the spine, obviously feeling the texture as much or more than he was actually looking at it. He glanced at the markings on the side, squinting slightly, but they were hard for him to make out in this light and foreign to him besides. -Father can read, he could probably show me.-
He tucked the book into his scarf and ambled around the back of the tree into the shadow... and disappeared. He then reappeared a moment later from the edge of the shadow without the book, picked up a couple more of the books, and peered at her. -I can take them there faster than walking them through the snow, if you want. I could take you too. Or I can help you carry them. It would be less wet this way, though.-

Makoto stared in shock, she knew kitsu's who did magic but nothing like that she just nodded unsure what to do or say he had just melted into the shadow and come back again. Where was her book? Where did he go? How did he do it?
"Does it hurt?" She eyed the shadows, she really didn't know him, what if it was a trap? What if she didn't come back out? What if she got lost in the shadows forever? But she had already agreed and wouldn't do him the injustice of changing her mind no matter how her nerves shook her. She gathered her books around her and clutched them to her chest like a security blanket, they comforted her, she would do this for their benefit as well as the benefit of this budding friendship, if things went badly she would not let it be by her doing. He was being so very nice she really was hoping they could be good friends
"If you would like, I could teach you to how to read? So many new things to find in books" She really did hope he liked books, someone she could share that love with

It wasn't to say that Lucent was harmless, exactly; he was just as dangerous as any other kitsu, in his own way probably more so. But he was far too literal and emotionally blunt with his responses to things for anyone who knew him to ever mistake his intentions about anything. If he was going to try and do you harm, there really would be no doubt or second guessing involved. But that was something Makoto and anyone else he had yet to meet would have to figure out on their own.
-It doesn't hurt. I've never walked anyone through but Father says it's like... what was it? Oh. Walking through a bit of chilly mist, that's what he said. But it's not wet.- He emphasized that last part, partly as a reiteration of what he'd said before about it being dryer than walking through the snow. Likely less cold, also, though probably more likely to elicit a shiver from someone who wasn't used to it.
He didn't really understand her apprehension, but then, being what he was he'd never had to guess if someone had a hidden agenda. He could tell when people were up to something, their emotions radiated it. Not that he could tell what, though... he was no mind reader. So after furrowing his brow at her for a moment Lucent led her over to the shadow. -I'll have to touch you. I can only take things I'm touching with me, and stuff attached to them, as long as it's not big like... a tree.-

Makoto giggled at the thought of what peoples faces would look like upon seeing a tree materialize out of the shadows
"Yes that would not be good to bring with" she smiled feeling a bit more at ease and stepped beside him. She glanced over and smiled at him. He was a bit odd but she liked it, she liked having a friend, she liked him. Maybe there was something to this whole socializing thing.. she would have to read more on the subject. There had been a great section on sociology at the book store she would certainly have to check out. It surely would have pointers for her, how to socialize more comfortably, though he seemed to have the ability to ignore her ineptitude which helped greatly, others would have laughed at her but he didn't even seem to notice.
