I think this year is the most appreciation our band has ever gotton. Over the last five years my highschools's marching band has finally made a name for itself. We have brought more attention to Naches then the football team, volley ball team, and the basket ball team alltogether. Then people from those teams make snide remarks like, "Well your job is easier we actually have to run around and physically exert ourselves." I said to this foot ball player, "Here put on this drum harness and this set of quads and on your toes in good form crab step across the field." He couldn't even make it 1/4th of the way. When he called BS on me I put on the quads and marched the field both ways. But still he was firm on his belief that we didn't do as much work as they did. I said tell me that when your football team wins 10 to 25 trophies every season and we'll talk then.

It's not as bad here in Cali for us. But we sill aren't treated fairly, and every once in awhile someone will say "marching band isn't hard" or whatever. For the most part, no one cares. Now, the school board loves us. The city, not so much.
Just the other weekend (before thanksgving) we were suppose to host our field tournament. However, it was raining. The field really wasn't that bad, we could have at the very least done stand still shows. But a city official came in, and shut us down. Just like that. Her excuse? "It's a safety issue, and there's a CIF football game next weekend..."
Now we are $30,000 dollars in debt. And all the city can say is "We're sorry and we know it's hurt your program." -.- no s**t. The first few bands that came in due to the fact that they didn't get the news on time looked at the field, then said "Really? They're shutting you down for this?" It was sad.
Our school, and two other schools have fairly large bands (5A and 6A). Their's one or two 4A, then the rest of the schools in the district have 3A and under. Why? Budget reasons. Their schools aren't given enough money to support a larger band, and the students that go to those schools aren't interested in being in band.
So...yeah...

Yea, down here in Mississippi its a little diff. I go to West Point High and here the football team get mad if we don't come to the game. Also, I live about an hr. away from Jackson State and there, ppl go to the football game and leave after halftime. Quencadence, I. Think. Not. lol. I do have to rep for our football team tho. 5A State CHamps and Ranked #26 Nationally But anyway back to Band. When we finished marching season with Superior ratings, we did get a standing ovation at the school.

The only real time I can remmber people giving us really good comments about our band and stuff that were good was probably the last time we preformed our last football game because we finally gotten our steps down and everything. The people actually stayed at halftime and watched instead of just getting up and leaving. I mean it was great we sounded good, our steps we good too. because the first few times we performed people get up and go to get food, or use the bathrooms.

Oh man, we had an incident recently with the athletics department like this.

So our volleyball team went to the national championship game, which was way too far away to bus to. They flew the dance team and spirit out there to support the team, but apparently couldn't afford to send fifteen bandsmen. Ok, that kinda sucks but it's not like it hasn't happened before so whatev.

Except then they rent out some AWFUL high school band for the game to butcher our fight songs. On national TV. Apparently athletics thinks it's perfectly ok to replace us, because we're nothing special. Let some random band play OUR songs.

-_-

On another note, I don't get the big deal about comparing band to football. But maybe I just have a different perspective on it cause of college, where it would be absurd to try to compare the two...(inb4 "marching band is a sport")

In middle school in east tennessee, If your in band, your considered a nerd. I find that very untrue because, Jenni (saxophone player) is on the volleyball, basketball, and softball team. She's in band but, she's not called a band nerd. Hell even the teachers call us band nerds. We (band) have turned it around on them by correcting them and telling them we are band weinies. If your in 6th grade- Band nerd, 7th-Band geek, 8th-Band weinie. Once a band weinie always a band weinie.

In Texas marching band, at least, is a big deal, but I think only the members of the bands know that. Still, most Texan marching bands are much larger than those of other states. My school band is over 200 strong. I'm just annoyed with the all the football games and movies shown on TV that don't show the band at all. Don't they know that the band, not the cheerleaders, pep up the crowd? Our cheerleaders actually do pretty much nothing except dance to the songs WE play.

our band is only about 45 people (yes i live in a small city) and guess how many cheerleaders we have? 5 cheerleaders................ during our football games once they started coming we had to wait for them to finish with their little cheer for us to play which is really annoying when there's only 5 of them cheering, and then you have 45 people waiting for them to be quiet for us to play.

My school is actually a Music specialist school (mainly for the money so the budget is still pretty meagre) but there are no real cliques except for the band nerds. Well, I mean there's no 'jocks' or cheerleaders or whatever (because English people are too lazy/grumpy for that) so there's the Cool people, the Band nerds and the Nerds. And that's it. But the Nerds rule the school, because its a Grammar school, so we're all nerds to some extent, except for the individuals whom we wonder how the hell they got in, but they are the minority in this case. But there's music activities every lunch (Chamber choir, junior choir, senior band, junior band, string orchestra and swing band) and sports are only ever poorly organised.

Although there was one case, where they promised an exchange for the Chamber choir to Prague, however the Netball Team got to go to South Africa instead, for no reason at all, except for sight seeing, which is silly.

Our band is definitely under appreciated. Most of the orchestra and chorus students actually "hate" us (unless they're in band) because they believe that the school gives the band a whole bunch of funds every year. Well the thing is, we have to pay $950 every year and the other two groups don't have to pay anything. So I'd say we ARE under appreciated.

Also everyone loves the football games and most of the students usually comment like, "This isn't the band show, blah blah blah they're not important."

I think when your school band wins more than the football team, that's something to account for.
