Despite the fact that Adetsu had no intention of ever impressing a white, he enjoyed the lessons. Being taught new holds, new evasive maneuvers, it all fascinated him, and, while he never contributed much to the class it was one of the few places outside of Kaeyne's presence that one might here him vocalize a question without being prompted first. He liked to get things right, after all.

But the lesson was over and while some of the students socialized after, Adetsu kept for himself. In truth, he didn't even begin to understand the other white candidates, or particularly wish to. He was in at as part of a deal he'd made, and it was a deal he planned not to hold up his end of. A violent, creature, insane and barely manageable was not his idea of a real dragon. He wanted a real dragon.

Actually, he wasn't certain he wanted a dragon at all. But it was a solution to the 'white candidate' problem, so he'd stand, and hope to get one from the clutch now hardening. No whites waiting there. Not with a bronze sire and a gold dam.

Which brought his mind back to the hatching, and familiar anxieties. As Adetsu often did, when his mind wanted to go elsewhere, he looked for a distraction. In this case, he settled with his back against a large rock, and pulling the materials out of his bag, started knitting.

Yes. Knitting. No Ghenzan child ever sat idle, him less than most. So he'd learned to knit. Mind, there wasn't much need for knitted clothing on the islands, but it could still get somewhat chilly in the winter. A hat would not be completely uncalled for. Sometimes he even thought to wear one in summer, to keep his head from burning. Then again, maybe not.

Mairin was wiped by the end of the lesson. She was a strong and capable teen but the qualifications for a white rider were still enough to push her to her limits. Nevertheless it was worth it if it meant lowering the likelihood of death or serious injury when force impressing. Mairin believed herself up for the challenge of handling a white but she'd prefer the initial wrestling one to the ground and impressing them to go as smoothly as such a thing could. Just because it was guaranteed to be violent didn't mean she had to come out of it horribly worse for wear.

Not that Mairin would have a chance to test her will against a white's any time soon. The eggs currently hardening on the sands would contain no whites and thus the dragonets inside them would choose their riders and not the other way around.

Undoing her sweat soaked braid Mairin stretched then headed towards home, her parents were always curious if not genuinely interested about what she was up to during these sessions. The young woman paused though when she spotted Adetsu leaned against a rock.. knitting. Mairin didn't actually know much about her fellow white candidate but knitting was definitely outside the realm of things she assumed he'd be interested in.

"Are you actually good at that?" she inquired. The question was one of genuine interest, if he was good maybe she could pay him to make coaster or something for her parent's anniversary. Mairin had run out of ideas on what to get them and the date was fast approaching.

Adetsu did not stop knitting. At first, he didn't even look up, just kept at his chosen task, needles click, click, clicking. When his gaze finally rose, it was only barely, long enough to take in who, exactly was addressing him. Voices, other than Kaeyne's tended to blur together for him.

So, for that matter, did people. This person, however, made it past 'generic islander' into 'white dragon impression classmate'. Which, to be honest, was not exactly a position of honor in his mind. Still, it was, at least, an identity. It even came with a name, after a second brief glance.

"Mairin." It might have been a greeting. It might have merely been him testing out the name, seeing if he had indeed found the right one to identify the person in front of him.

The needles kept clicking.

A third glance.

"Yes."

" Would you make something for me if I paid you?" Might as well not dance around the subject, besides Mairin had a feeling that being subtle or burying the lead might only make this conversation awkward. " And how long did it take you to learn?" The second question was a one that had just popped into her head, hell maybe she should take this knitting thing up something as something to do when she couldn't be active. She had a potential teacher right here after all.

Either this question required deep consideration, or Adetsu was done talking. Either way, he was no longer glancing up at Mairin, the whole of his attention on his hands as he worked away. The yarn he was working with was undyed, a simple grayish white. He didn't much go in for colors. He seemed, as he claimed, to be good at what he was doing. He worked at an even speed, with the confidence of familiarity.

"Maybe," he said, neither raising his head nor slowing. There was no reluctance there, though. Whatever his reason for offering even so tentative an agreement, it wasn't simply to placate her. He generally didn't worry about whether people were placated or not. "Need something made?"

The second question got only a shrug at first, those wide shoulders raising and falling in one large, dismissive motion. "Don't remember," he admitted. He'd been knitting since he was small, something to keep his hands busy when it was too cold or too dark to be helping his father. No friends to play with, nothing to do, so one learned something useful. He'd learned to knit. "'ve always done it."

Mairin was not entirely sure what to make of the other white candidate. He was skilled in lessons but he seemed slow when it came to talking, like he needed an awful lot of time to think about his answers. He was definitely talented though, she supposed he knew his way around needles like she knew hers around sailing knots and fishing tools.

" I need something for my parents anniversary," she admitted. " I've run out of gift ideas but I can't not get them anything." The young woman had no real response to give back to Adetsu's on her second question, she was still curious about maybe picking it up herself even if it took forever to learn. She wasn't about to ask for lessons today though, one favour at a time; besides there was going to be a hatching soon and either one or both of them might end up with no spare time for such things.

Of course that was all up to the dragons because there were no whites to fight over in the upcoming clutch. Fiddling with the cuff of one sleeve she tried to imagine just how she'd have to go about beating her current companion to a white, that might actually be harder than wrestling the damn thing to impress it!

Adetsu glanced upward, at the path the sun was making across the cloudless blue sky. It hadn't been long since he'd started knitting, but he hadn't needed to kill much time. Just, enough. By now, Kaeyne would have finished his chores and would be headed home. And then there would be a meal, and more chores after.

Without speaking, he set down his needles, wrapping the yarn back up and tucking it away into his bag. He did so quickly, with the ease of long practice, each move neat and efficient. When the bag was fully packed, he stood, rolling his shoulders and glancing again at the sun to be sure that his timing was correct.

Yes, Kaeyne would arrive just as he did, if he kept his pace even.

Finally, he looked at Mairin. He hadn't formed an opinion of her, not really. But he didn't form many, not even after much longer exposure. She wasn't obnoxious. That was an opinion of sorts. As much as Adetsu didn't care for talking, he didn't mind it in others, as long as they didn't pressure him over much to respond.

"Find me when you decide what you want," he said. "I will make it."

He inclined his head then, politely, and turned away. The conversation was, quite clearly, over.
