Christmas '10 Spriting Contest
Welcome to my contest. This yeah, I hope for a much larger contestant number, as I do feel making an entry for this contest is child's play for even spriting novices. You do not have to be skilled at it- I could put something together and have it not be as creative or good looking as someone else's. (I hardly ever actually win a spriting contest when I enter anyway, go figure..) Anyway, give this a look and please consider entering. If you have a question that I have not answered, then PM me. »→ The Theme:Unlike what I've tried to do lately, I will not be holding two divisions, as I could not really think of a suitable theme for just mugs. Instead, I will be holding a spriting contest that covers all spriting resources. Thus, I came up with: Festive Scene Simply put, make a scene of sprites that fits with the Holiday or Winter season. Not very hard at all.»→ How to Enter:If you wish to join this contest, send a trade of 500g to me, and then once you have finished your entry, PM it to me. The maximum number of entrants allowed is ten. The deadline for entering is the end of the day on Christmas, December 25th.»→ Rules/ FAQ:- You are not limited to mugs. You are not limited to battle sprites. You can use whatever resources for FE spriting you have or can find, so long as you are not stealing. You can even custom work as needed, so long as there are Fire Emblem styled sprites in your entry. - A good place for resources is FEPlanet. - This is not a comic making contest, but I will accept comic entries, so long as they do not exceed 5 frames. - Here are some examples of sprites I did a few years ago, for Christmas Search and Find. You cannot use them, but maybe they can help give inspiration. »→ Prizes:The prize will be a collection of all the entry fees. The more people that enter, the larger the prize. However, I may include some additions, including consolation prizes.»→ Contestants:1. askem2 [Trade Accepted | Awaiting Entry] 2. Misuki Marishima [Trade Accepted | Entry Received] 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

There will be no voting, as only two people entered and only one person actually submitted an entry.
I am personally tired of running a contest that nobody enters, so I won't be doing it anymore in the future.

You denied my entry. Not my fault I broke Photoshop. Then the computer. Then the back up computer.

@Naomi: .....Entry has been open since December. We advertised the contests in an announcement and in the newsletter and on the main forum. The topics have been in the Holiday forum for months. Entry is over and should have been long ago. The Halloween contest also had a total of zero entries. Reason says that nobody save for maybe one or rarely two people has any desire to be a part of this contest. And it is not just my contest; all the others hardly get any entries at all. If the crew should decide that it is worth putting in the effort to have another event (which I'm not seeing, since nobody seems to want to have anything to do with games or contests or the RP anymore), I will not be running this contest. However, if any other crew should wish to, it is theirs.
@Shadow: Your entry was not a fire emblem sprite and did not fit the theme of the contest. As much as you may wish, there are no mechas in the world of FE. And as far as photoshop goes, that is the last thing I would suggest you use, anyway. MS Paint works very well unless you have the latest version of it.

Rath, the only time of the year I know I can honestly devote sufficient effort to creating a respectable entry is in summer. But if you decide to have one then, I can guarantee I join it and will submit an entry. For other times of the year, the only people who actually produced results somewhat recently were Sue and Rei, and... yeah. We both know why that isn't going to happen anymore.
@ people looking to enter contests: spriting is insanely time-consuming. Especially if you're new to it. ESPECIALLY, especially if you want to make something innovative or do something from scratch.

This is why the latest themes have not been about one's skill for spriting, but about one's creativity. For Halloween, the task was to make a random bandit mug- as ugly or gross as you want, skill in spriting does not guarantee anything. (I would know, I hardly ever WIN a spriting contest when I enter..) This last one was the most broad theme ever and combined every field of spriting in FE into one. Skill with making sprites was completely irrelevant. For example, I will show Sue's entry, the only person to submit anything. Notice that none of these sprites were of her own making. The Nino battle sprite is FD's and the Rath mug is mine. Not even the background is hers, she got it from FEP. The idea of what to make was hers and she did it. All resources were open to her and she used them- and yes, I was a resource too, and would have been to anybody who sought to use me. I told her this, hinting that if she desired to have an older Nino mug made, I could do it for her, but she didn't catch on and worked around it. Anybody who has read the Spin the Bottle game when it has been renamed to the Mistletoe game during Christmas will recognize the scene here. My next idea was to issue a theme where you have to use a certain person or significant part of somebody in a mug. The parts/person in the mug should still be identifiable, but not too identifiable- the more creative you are with what you use and how you use it, the better. Aside from the required mug or part of that mug, there are no other restrictions. Skill in spriting will help, but those like me who custom practically everything now will have to go back to our roots of splicing in order to achieve the goal of the theme, meaning there's not much of an advantage to the advanced spriters. That, however, is moot. I simply do not see enough interest in this guild to continue doing this contest during any time of the year.

...I can at least say on my part, I understand your frustration with the lack of entries Rath. People either just don't do anything, or they try to wait till the last second, thinking, "Oh well I can just whip something together in the end." It never works that way.
Me being on the school newspaper has shown me this in many occasions. Due to being the art editor, I know that I would have to hound certain people to ensure that they would do their work. But there are still the cases where the work does not get done, and then things start falling apart.
I'll use an example I complained about a while back, but have come to terms with: Last months issue. We had a lot of work for this issue that people had to do. I had two story assignments as well as my job as copy editor and art editor. When it came down to it, people didn't go through to make sure their stories were as good as they could be. Due to this, we had to hand them back, and hound them to do their revisions. We had to push our publication back a week. I even had some art that didn't come in. It made me mad, and we couldn't cancel the newspaper.
Overall, I understand your feelings here. I know that on my part, I have no experience for any of the contests, save for maybe the fanfiction one. The only thing against me for entering contests is the fact that I just don't have as much time as I used to. I focus my attention on other things, such as the school newspaper. If you need a break from contests, then take that break. Hand it over to someone else who would want to run the contests, and have time for them.

I can understand where you are coming from, Rath. I'm sorry that I haven't been entering these contest since forever, but I've been tapped out on creative juices for a while mainly because they are going somewhere else. Not to mention I haven't been too active. :/
