Anton began in earnest a new life of study, with so much of his past hazy or a fragmented puzzle he was finding some of what he read to be familiar but out of context. There was a certain level of cognitive dissonance as he sometimes knew entire sections of text when he lay eyes on a book but only the words not the form or meaning. It was much like being given an outline of a picture of a dog but no color. He could recognize that it was a dog, but there was no true image or impression in his mind from it. As a result he was using his discussions with Instructor Jiang to give color and life to the image of strategy and tactics. While working diligently on the new and remarkably familiar text he had now been assigned the day past like smoke in the wind fading to nothing before his eyes.

The next morning Anton woke early and picking up the current book made his way to the nearby hospital for his check up as ordered. He arrived early for his appointment and checked in with the nurse before sitting down to read a section on the five essentials of victory while he waited. It was as he was waiting that a somewhat disturbing seen took place as a number of insects emerged suddenly from a nearby room and swarmed across the floor towards Anton before moving up his legs to his torso and from there into his sleeves before disappearing. Anton was only surprised briefly before he smiled widely and nodded, he suddenly felt a little more whole and comfortable as a missing part of himself was returned. As he was smiling the door the insects emerged from opened and the Doctor emerged. Your timing was good Anton, this batch was just cleared for release, the others are still undergoing testing so you understand they cannot be returned yet.

Anton stood and bowed slightly before saying, Of course Dr. Huo, I have no complaints but am simply relieved to have some returned. I had not realized how much not having them made me feel like something was missing before they were returned. Thank you. As he spoke he neatly closed his book as doctor Huo motioned his head to indicate Anton should follow him. Anton nodded slightly before moving through the waiting area and past the door to the halls beyond. After being led through a number of corridors that mostly looked the same they went up a flight of stairs and into the office Anton had departed from a few days before. As he walked through the door being held by Doctor Huo he was surprised to see another person in the room as well. Instructor Jiang! How are you today, sorry I had not expected to see you here. After a moment of shock as he identified the other person in the room Anton apologized for his reaction before moving to sit in one of the open chairs.

Doctor Huo entered last and closed the door before explaining, Don’t be alarmed Anton, I invited Instructor Jiang to check in today and occasionally in the future for hallmark appointments since he is helping with your training and will need to know your current limits. After all if he does not hear it from me how can he gain an accurate idea of what will train you compared to what will break you? With a slight nod being exchanged with Instructor Jiang, Doctor Huo sat down and began speaking once more, To begin, I want to emphasize the state of your health right now. It is truly horrendous even though the exterior appears to have healed. I can not at present agree to any level of strenuous activity or training. Some basic physical therapy is beneficial but even that should be light and focus on preventing further muscle decay not actually building it yet. At Instructor Jiang’s nod Doctor Huo paused a moment and reached out lightly to press his fingers against Anton’s wrist as he closed his eyes for several minutes as the other two maintained their silence.

After a short time Doctor Huo opened his eyes and retracted his hand before motioning to a couple diagrams on the wall. One was of the chakra system in the body while the other was of the muscular and skeletal systems. If you will look here, the main issues we have are two and they are frankly compounding each other which is resulting in some complications. First is the chakra system, in your body not only were the channels chakra flows through mostly shredded most of the tenketsu nodes were to some degree ruptured. We are not entirely sure what technique caused this though we believe you may have sent your own insects through your body to wreck the system enough to cover your jutsu, essentially inflicting on yourself what Anbu operatives would normally do to missing ninja to prevent leaks on our nations techniques. Which is admirable but you survived and whoever had captured you dredged the system further which caused increased weakness but also repaired the damage enough to not kill you. The issue with this is that the system is slow to heal and the damage is extensive enough that we don’t want to touch it and would rather let it continue to heal on it’s own. The progress is noticeable and compared to how we assume it looked three months ago it is not too bad off. However it will still likely be two or more weeks before it is fully recovered and even then due to the extent of the damage it is recovering from it will be weakened. So we will notify you when it is okay to begin chakra training and usage again but be mentally prepared to start over from the beginning as though you were a student again. Perhaps after three to sixth months if the therapy and rehabilitation is going well we can use other methods to help it recover to your previous level and once again train beyond that.

Pausing to nod encouragingly at Anton he then pointed to the other diagram, Now here’s where it gets more complex, or rather here is part of the complexity. Because of your chakra channels being torn and tenketsu ruptured you cannot even try to channel chakra, but that isn’t to say your body has none. However it has been leaking for months now. From your files we know what your chakra specialties are and the main reason the village is willing to invest in your training and recovery is because of your potential in chakra. However having the chakra leak into your body has resulted in lots of damage to your muscular and skeletal system as well as slowed your recovery. If anything we should probably be happy that you do not train in fire or lightning chakra since having seen the damage caused by your existing chakra I believe your nervous system would have been heavily damaged or you would have been outright killed from the internal damage of having organs burned. That was the fate of one of your former teammates we found before you. We theorize that your bugs actually also assisted in preventing your death and allowing you to heal to some extent because they consumed much of the leaking chakra. That is also why we prioritized the bugs that returned today to insure they could continue preventing damage from leaking chakra to help with your recovery.

Taking a deep breath Doctor Huo stood and moved closer to the picture before saying, Despite how it sounds that was in fact the good news. Now to focus more on the bad. While your chakra types have resulted in you not dying or having your nervous system destroyed or wrecked, they have not benefitted you. Instead we are seeing several different phenomena which we can extrapolate the causal reasons based on your files. First off is your arms and back, specifically your lower back. I am assuming you’ve noticed some weakness in these areas and based on your technique preferences we believe the chakra that usually was channeled into these areas has caused aggravated tearing to the muscles, ligaments, and tendons which translates into weakness and accelerated your muscular atrophy and lower strength. As a result until chakra stops leaking all together or is fully controlled you will not get any stronger than you are with or without training. There are some mitigating factors in your back that allow you to move normally but should you decide to throw a punch or kick then chances are ninety eight percent of the time you will hit softer than the average new academy student. As such I suggest you not place expectation on taijutsu at least not in the present.

Seeing the crease in Anton’s brow at the news Doctor Huo followed up, Keep in mind this is purely from a strength perspective and is limited to how forceful you can be with these movements, speed wise you should be fine. The weakness essentially is in more exaggerated movements but things like running or forming seals shouldn’t be effected so if you were to use the proper tools it’s not impossible to perform taijutsu just not practical to focus on it. Next up is your legs, the chakra types that were leaking here and in your chest were in many ways milder and in fact together helped to preserve and reinforce these areas so your speed and stamina should not be overly impacted save from the torture. However even here has some issues of its own to work out. We won’t get into it too much but if you feel a lack of flexibility don’t worry too much, gradually as you get your bugs back and they eat chakra in your body you’ll recover completely. Lastly is your heart, lungs, and brain. The first two were affected by a chakra type and weakened but should gradually recover. However, in the case of the brain we are looking at a two prong problem or actually I suppose three. Firstly as you yourself are well aware of most of the damage done to you is a result of a very powerful genjutsu user. The damage from their techniques and your torture are enough that your mind itself is technically still in shock. This is the reason for your current emotional state, the further fragmentation of your memories, and a glaring weakness that for lack of a kind way to put it, nearly made you into a retard. As a result while your intelligence and memories will recover your actual mental defenses are holey enough to be religious. The second issue is that the chakra leaking near your brain has caused some permanent damage to your brain so some memories are likely lost forever and the fragmented state of other memories can only be restored by analyzing each memory and forming new connections between them so essentially you would need to relearn your life to make sense of your memories.

Shaking his head softly Doctor Huo gave Anton a few minutes to process everything he said before continuing, On this note I actually have a suggestion for Instructor Jiang on your therapy but we’ll cover that at the end. The last issue is something you need to be aware of. We do not know who the person that ambushed you was but their abilities in genjutsu are absolutely considered top class and as such we can’t be sure there isn’t anything buried in your mind that will cause future issues or even if you have been brainwashed. As such you will need to be careful going forward in regards to your mind. The final overall issue is the interplay between these three factors. Your body, mind, and chakra are all disturbed and they affect each other in different ways so while your body’s recovery is limited and so is your chakra for at least a few more weeks your mind is not. If you are able to train your mind properly you may be able to accelerate your recovery of your body and chakra so to this end I am actually going to suggest putting plenty of time and effort into your mental training with a focus on controlling yourself first and your abilities after healing. To this end I understand one of the research and development departments may be approaching you in the future about taking in a new experimental insect. That will not be immediate though as you will need to greatly improve your intelligence before you qualify to bond with it.

Instructor Jiang nodded as he heard all of this and said softly, Well then Doctor from my understanding at present it is okay to slowly train his speed and stamina with things like walking and working up to running, avoid strength based training, and ignore chakra training of any sort for now but it’s okay to focus on intelligence and will? If that is the case it’s in line with my thinking we will simply have to focus on developing Anton into a ranged and support ninjutsu focus with genjutsu support.

One question Doctor. As Anton spoke he looked somewhat troubled, What happens if the bugs can’t keep my chakra in check until I’m healed or if my channels or tenketsu tear or rupture again? Also is there any way to train in genjutsu while injured like this? As he spoke he gestured towards his head to indicate the mental trauma he still carried.

Doctor Huo responded directly, If it happens again in the future that is something we can only analyze then. If your bugs can’t keep your chakra in check though then it is quite likely you will not truly be further hurt but your recovery will not improve and will take two or three times longer than currently projected. As for your question about training genjutsu, the damage to you is done and mostly residual now so much like normal rehabilitation the best approach to fixing it is in fact training. In this case your mind, learning and working on mental exercises will help you recover faster and while your genjutsu initially would remain weak while your mind is still healing it should still improve bit by bit and once your mind is healed you should see a sharp jump in strength and skill. That’s all for today, Instructor Jiang please use this information in tailoring your training regiment.

In response to these words Instructor Jiang nodded to Doctor Huo and both looked to Anton for further questions. After a few moments Anton turned his attention to Instructor Jiang for guidance, For now go on and follow my prior instructions, walk regularly but don’t push yourself, rest plenty and study the books I gave you. For now consider it self study while I work on a training plan based on this and once you finish those books go to the library and continue reading on any and all subjects that interest you with the exception of jutsu. I am okay with you reading books on the theory of ninjutsu, genjutsu, or taijutsu but not books on actual technique. I would actually prefer you limit your studies to fields such as medicine, science, geography, administration, and of course history and tactics. Anton nodded in understanding before bidding farewell to the doctor and teacher as he headed to the park to think on everything he had heard as well as his future prospects.

As Anton reached the park he moved to a nearby tree and sat beneath it staring blankly at people relaxing and playing amongst the benches and grass. As he sat he tried desperately to think but found himself losing his train of thought. Finally he gave up and simply closed his eyes to the world before him and focused on the darkness behind his eyes. There was a lot he wanted to say or do but he had no clues on how to begin. Should he seek his past or present first? Should he return to his old ways or follow new advice? There were so many conflicts in his mind and heart that he felt paralyzed as though the world was speeding on and he was standing still being left behind. Gritting his teeth he made a fist and felt the weakness in his hands which simply served to frustrate him further. What fairness could exist in this world?

Fine then. If the world is going to be unfair by its nature, then I simply need to become strong enough that I can rebel against such tenants. With enough power you can change everything, even fate and nature. So that is what I shall do, I will grow my strength and even if I cannot reach the apex I will find someone to serve that I believe can reach the apex. If they can reform the world and suffering then that is the person I will put before the village. Should I never find such a person then I will continue to work to become that person. Anton thought as he gritted his teeth and pinched his leg to use the pain to drive away his inaction.

Standing suddenly Anton took a pair of sunglasses from his pocket and put them on so that none of his appearance could be made out by others before he limped off with the feeling of salt rubbing his skin beneath the bandages on his face. As he moved he began to consider for himself how he could help himself. So far ever since the moment he realized his throat had been slit he had only survived because of other’s actions. How could he have forgotten the feeling of seizing control of his own life? As a child that was his purpose in training to become a ninja yet at some point everything became routine and normal. He no longer did what he wanted but instead what was expected of or required from him.

Often the moments that a life changes are small and would seem inconsequential to others but like grains of sand the moments add up and cascade into sweeping changes. This time out of frustration Anton made a decision, over time each time he decided to continue pursuing his decision the change would become greater. For now to others he would simply be frustrated, but in the large tapestry of time he had changed his color and was now the beginning of a greater design than his past. For control, for survival, for himself he had made his decision and now Anton had to give his all to achieve it. Taking a breath he made his way back to his room. To each effort a starting point was needed and the more detailed the map the better the results.

As he reached his home and moved to the table he took out a notebook and begin thinking of how best to train. Making quick notes on his condition and the specifics he was given by Doctor Huo, Anton began to consider what he could be good at. Speaking softly he said, So currently I can work on my speed, my ninjutsu, and my intellect though not yet my strength of mind. How useless. I’m restricted from working on techniques or using chakra for at least another few weeks and my body is damaged enough the only physical therapy I can do is walking. In that case for the present I’ll aim for walking three times a day just after meals to my limit. Other than that I’ll read and work on my reasoning skills. Also psychology, the better I understand how people think the more benefit genjutsu will have for me in the future. As he spoke quietly to himself his agitated mind began to calm and he found himself relaxing slightly and moving his mindset closer to a calm and logical process. That said there was still much to do. The first thing to do was to also set aside time for meditative introspection so that he could sort at least some of his fragmented memories and learn about himself. After all not knowing himself and hoping to recover from his mental trauma was foolish and would only be like burying explosive tags and growing grass. It would leave a nasty surprise waiting to go off in his future.

Deciding to begin immediately he wrote down a rough schedule for himself then moved to his bed and sat comfortably as he probed his mind and began to reconstruct his memories much as he would a jigsaw puzzle. He began with a corner, in this case the academy. It was a place he had to have attended and it was also a place he had been to and walked through since his recovery. As such he took time to focus on each part of the academy in hopes of having it trigger other images. To begin he chose the front gate and he remembered seeing it from a lower viewpoint and people walking past but nothing vivid emerged. After a moment of thought he decided this made sense, the view of approaching a school or work place was something anyone would see so often it could easily become little more than a background. Overlooked and forgotten yet at the same time easily remembered when brought up.

Next he shifted his attention from the building to Instructor Jiang, he had recognized him on sight which meant there were relevant fragments of memory related to his former teacher. As he pictured him he felt like his image of the man was several deeper appearances, younger, healthier, wounded, skinnier, a variety of images overlapped. For the moment though he focused on the youngest looking image that came to mind and carefully probed the image to see if any memories triggered.

Come on Ant, if you orphans can’t keep up you’re going to be used as compost. The voice was coming from a blurry figure ahead of him as they ran and another figure moved at his side. Yet when he tried to look at either figure all he saw was darkness or a twisted outline flickering with overlapping and confusing imagery that he could not even begin to process or understand. Anton opened his eyes suddenly to find his heartbeat hammering while he sat drenched in sweat not understanding what happened. There were at least two people that he could not see even though he clearly remembered and the second had been speaking but their voice was covered by dozens or hundreds of other voices in different tones and saying different words. Perhaps it was the same voice at different times but however the truth should be he could only remember the voice of the boy running ahead and not the person running at the side.

Suddenly Anton felt his stomach rebel and was only able to fall forward so that his head was over the floor as he retched and vomited onto the floor. Shivering and shaking in fear and revulsion he felt his mind go blank as his stomach emptied itself leaving him feeling weak and feverish while he continued to dry heave over the messy floor. Yet despite his best efforts to regain control of himself he simply lay shivering over the stench of his own vomit, spasms wracking his body irregularly as bile was forced out. Every time he started to calm down he felt like there was something nibbling at the edge of his awareness and when his mind began to make out a soft whisper it acted as a trigger causing him to once more be filled with fear and loathing. Weakly he let out a thought and his insects moved out of his body to trigger a nearby metronome.

Gradually he calmed down as he focused on the steady sound of the metronome and forced out all other thoughts only to consume himself with counting. One and two and three and four and. Over and over he repeated the simple four count in his mind until all thoughts were drowned out and only the ticking remained. Sighing as he collapsed weakly he calmed himself and did not seek further introspection, whatever had happened to his mind it was now clear that some memories were more dangerous to his mentality than others. Clearly what he had been told about his mental defenses being weak was confirmed as true to him in this instant.

Calming himself once more Anton moved off the foot of the bed and went to get cleaning supplies to clean up the mess he had made in his room before moving to the table and diving into the current book he was reading as though running from his mental demons. He devoted himself single mindedly to the act of reading and learning. The only outside stimulus he allowed was the ticking of the metronome to chase away the silence and help him remain sane.
