Yeth? It was midday, a bit after lunch, when Palisanth sent to the former Weyrlingmaster's brown. Is Yours about? Mine - O'ri - she would like to speak to him, if he does not mind. They had questions! Nothing specifically important, considering they hadn't actually started teaching yet, but general questions. Twelve turns had passed since their own graduation, and Weyrling lessons seemed like a very long time ago.

There, she said to her rider, I have asked.

O'ri, who was leaning up against the green, patted her fondly. Thank you, Pali.

R'o spent most of his time spiraling down into a sorry state no respectable rider would be in. He hoped his least capable Weyrling would never falter in their stride, yet he not only hesitated in his own but stumbled every time he did dare to move forward. Or, shards, just looking back caught him off balance.

He couldn't remember the name of that Weyrling, if there really was one that championed only in the realm of incompetence; he could barely remember any of them anymore. He'd lost touch with everyone and isolated himself from all but the occasional mid-morning chat with the Weyrleader or exchange of gossip with kitchen workers. (A fallen man was still a man. Men needed to eat.)

Those that had been exceptional troublemakers or duty-bound prodigies he could recall - sometimes. O'ri? Not one of them.

"Who is he?"

A woman, Mine. A new Weyrlingmaster.

Hadn't he given up his rank specifically to avoid conversations about this? How troublesome. "Tell her to ask the Weyrleader."

She asked for you. If you will not help I will fly Dorath.

"You couldn't catch her," R'o pointed out. No hesitation, no mercy. His dragon would be offended but facts were facts. "If you could, that would have worked." He'd never want to be where H'pez was.

Mine...

"Ask where she is."

And once Yeth had done that, and R'o had a better idea of where he was supposed to be, he abandoned the lonesome comfort of his weyr to go out and help somebody. That's what Weyrlingmasters did: they helped.

Hmph.

He greeted her on sight, trying for all his good character buried beneath the gloom to appear happier to be there than he really was. "O'ri. What can I help you with?"

Blissfully oblivious to the former Weyrlingmaster's reluctance, O'ri greeted him with her customary enthusiasm, and Palisanth echoed her with a pleasant rumble. "Afternoon, R'o!"

"I hope you don't mind us asking you out here. I thought about asking H'pez, but he's kind of busy all the time now.." Something Palisanth had reminded her of, and urged her to inquire with R'o instead. Besides, if she remembered right, he had a very nice brown. Oh, and he probably actually knew more, that too. The green gave her rider a mental nudge - she was rambling!

"Um. Well. We were just sort of wondering if you could tell us anything about the Weyrlings?"

"I hope you don't mind us asking you out here."

No, he didn't mind. He'd kept to himself this entire time because he wanted to have conversations with strangers. R'o felt a sigh making its way up from his chest, but it never passed his lips. Not unlike the scolding words of rebuttal in regards to if he "minded" or not. He always had been one to bit his tongue until it bled.

"This batch?" R'o expected the question. Any drudge could piece together why a new Weyrlingmaster would request the company of an old one. "I don't know much about Dorath's last clutch... or those ones from Ghenza. Weyrlings come in three varieties: trouble, prodigies and ones you know are going to die during Threadfall. Sometimes, the first and third are one in the same."

This was off to a cheery start.
