It was late afternoon, the sun high and hot in the cloudless blue sky. In respect to the weather, Adetsu stood shirtless on the shoreline, his attention fixed on some distant point across the ocean. Ghenza, perhaps? Maybe. It'd been known to happen. Even now. Then again, maybe he was just thinking about the eggs hardening on the sands, the opportunities and dangers they presented.
At least there wouldn't be any white eggs. Kaeyne had made his feelings about that more than clear.
Kaeyne. He'd be along shortly, Adetsu knew. They'd made plans to go egg hunting today, as they often did. Something about the chore turned many people's stomachs, though it'd never bothered him. He did, at times, want a firelizard of his own. It'd be useful when the angry gold clutchmamas started attacking to have someone on their side to run distractions. But Adetsu was good with a sling, and could usually at least keep them busy until the job was done.
Eggs.
Firelizard eggs. Dragon eggs. Wher eggs.
Sometimes it seemed his whole life lately was eggs. Was things that were waiting to be things.
That didn't make sense.
He rolled his shoulders, then, almost absently, dropped to the sand and began to do one-handed push-ups. No use wasting the moments spent waiting. And it was a good way not to think.

Kaeyne allowed himself to be distracted that morning. Adetsu wandered off to meet up in their usual place, to hunt eggs, but Kaeyne's hunting clothes were in need of mending. Small mending only, yes, but small tears turned to larger tears, and Kaeyne did not want to use another pair of pants as his 'egg hunting' pants. There was only so many bits of clothing you wanted blood and egg ooze on, after all. He'd sewn the holes back into functional closed cloth before finally heading off after his lover.
Who somehow had driven himself to pushups. Boredom or Adetsu caught himself getting too in depth in thought. It happened, sometimes. Kaeyne found the boredom to be the most common reason behind the one armed push ups.
Dressed in newly mended black pants and a loose shirt (for his tunics were much too nice to get gooey with eggs), Kaeyne crouched down beside the bald young man. He put splayed fingers and a flat palm down against the middle of Adetsu's back and pressed down just enough to announce his presence.
"Are you very bored, 'Tsu? Or are these the sorts you do when thinking on something distasteful?" Another gentle push, a little more pressure, and Kaeyne sat back on his heels. "I did not mean to take as long as I did."
Firelizard egg hunting rarely meant thinking.

The pressure on his back was light and familiar. The slight increase, far from enough to stop his exercise. Still, Adetsu allowed his arms to relax, dropping forward into the sand before rolling, unhurried, onto his back. He yawned, stretched briefly, and sat up.
"The hatching," he said. Maybe it was an answer, maybe a change of subject. Either way, it was as close to an answer as Kaeyne was likely to get. Even with Kaeyne, Adetsu was not what one would call loquacious. But, it was alright. It was how they were. "It will be my first, 'Yne."
How exactly he felt about that fact, was apparently more than he was entirely prepared to express.
"There was no hurry. I need to keep in shape, anyway." Here, a smirk would fit on any other man, but Adetsu kept his neutral expression. "You would not like me to go soft."

The corners of Kaeyne's mouth curled upwards just enough to give that hint of a smile and remained there even as he began to brush and flick bits of sand from Adetsu's chest.
"Oh, joy. I am to participate in one of your firsts," said Kaeyne, amused. The brushing hand paused in its efforts to clean off his exercised Adetsu and chose, instead, to drum those idle fingers on his chest instead. Just over the thump of a heartbeat. The place there sharding white dragons aimed for when you tried to Impress them. "It will be my fourth. They are... interesting. We will Impress together, 'Tsu."
The fingers tapped twice, hard. Kaeyne shook his head with that brief almost-smile, and draped his arms onto his knees once more. "I have a feeling I would like you anyway. Pity. But I prefer you hard. Much more exciting."
A whiplash grin and Kaeyne on his feet, one slim hand offered to Adetsu in assistance. Fingers wriggled in what could be considered a tease, head cocked to the side.

"Mm." Yes. Mm. What, you were expecting a sonnet? He took the offered hand and pulled himself up, still moving with a relaxed ease, clearly quite content in this moment. This moment. Not the last. Most likely not the next. But this moment, could be one he asked nothing of. Thought nothing of. Adetsu was at his happiest in the times he thought the least. There was probably something unfortunate in that fact.
"I do not like that it relies so little on what I do." More than that, he didn't like the idea that this might be something that could take Kaeyne from him, that a dragon might see use in his friend, while none saw the same in him. He was not sure what he'd do, if only one of him impressed. The idea would terrify him, if he thought about it too much. So he didn't.
"We have not searched this beach in some time. I thought we would follow it to the cliffs, and then look among the rocks there." He had not yet let go of Kaeyne's hand, and now, he squeezed, brief affectionate pressure, and then let it drop. "We will have less time for this, if we do impress."
The island would be overrun. It was hard to imagine any other island residents taking to the task with as much dedication and enthusiasm as the two of them displayed.

Kaeyne spoke only when their hands fell. Then, that newly free hand snaked up to press against the back of his Adetsu's neck, fingers curled close. Kaeyne tugged with no little strength, dark eyes trained on Adetsu as he came closer.
"Unless you must chase it down to Impress," those fingers squeezed, not so subtle a warning, "It matters on nothing that you do, 'Tsu. It matters on you and you are plenty. More than enough. It is all on them. Not you."
What did that say about him, then? Him and standing each clutch from the age twelve and up. Many had Impressed. None ever chose Kaeyne. It could be that he was not enough. Kaeyne pursed his lips and slid his hand up to rub, gently, against the shiny curve of Adetsu's head. Little speeches, pretty in themselves, they came often from the young Candidate when he thought something to be amiss. One last stroke, head to ear to side of cheek until his hand fell once more and the shorter man stepped away.
"We must take care of as many as we can in the meantime, then. Or teach our future dragons to hunt them with us." A quirk of an eyebrow and Kaeyne stepped back, glanced around them to the rocky shoreline. "To the cliffs, then."

The touch was welcome, of course it was, and Adetsu leaned into it, clearly enjoying the contact. They were often affectionate with each other, in their own ways. But their affection could sometimes be a rough thing. This was softer, and somewhat rarer as a result. The words, however, were more troubling, highlighting his fears instead of calming them. When Kaeyne dropped his hand, Adetsu shifted, rolling his shoulders.
He began walking though, silently. He remained so for a number of minutes, attentively scanning the sands in front of them for any sign of firelizard eggs, his eyes occasionally jumping upward at signs of movement, as firelizards on wing sometimes indicated a clutch.
"That is the thing about whites," he said, when he finally found reason to speak again. It was not unusual for him to return to a conversation minutes, sometimes hours later. "and we have discussed this so there is no need for threats. They go to the strongest, the most capable. I can be that."
"I do not know how to be what a real dragon looks for. No one does."

Kaeyne followed suit, moving in just slightly behind and to the side of Adetsu. If the man had something to say, let him say it. In the meantime, Kaeyne would be more than happy to allow him to simply hunt for eggs and destroy them.
"I was not going to threaten," he said, perhaps a bit unconvincingly to the one who knew him so well. Kaeyne ignored his duties once again in return to attempt and comfort the large man. Fingers hooked in the hem of Adetsu's pants and the shorter man leaned in, solid against him as they walked. "But you already have yourself a bloodthirsty beast for the rest of your life, Adetsumine. There is no need to fight and be mauled, crippled, or killed for a second one."
A kiss, just one, on the shoulder, before Kaeyne looked towards what may have been a flit rising from the rock. No. He didn't let go of Adetsu for a long moment and he finally sighed, eyes hooded.
"We will see with this clutch. There are no whites or blacks and may not even be maulings. Chasing down one of them isn't something to be worried about just yet." He pressed an elbow gently into Adetsu's side. "if no one knows how to be right for a real dragon, then we are right on course, 'Tsu."

Kaeyne was not the first lover to speak to Adetsu of forever. And Adetsu, standing still to enjoy the warm pressure of Kaeyne's nearness against his bare back, could not help but think of the other. Who had promised to come for him.
Who had not come. Not in six turns.
It was not a pleasant thought and Adetsu, being himself, skirted the edge of it, refusing to allow his emotions the thought they probably deserved. There were times when the dark came to the surface, times when he could not repress and delay and choose not to think. This, however, was not one of those times. And Kaeyne, understandably, did not like to see him thinking such things.
"You are no beast. And I want a white little more than you want me to have one. This clutch--"
A flurry of motion then, and a flash of gold as a firelizard took flight nearby. Adetsu nodded in the direction he'd seen her take off from, reaching into his beltpouch to remove his sling. If it was a clutch, she'd hang around to defend it. Golds always did. It made Adetsu prefer the green clutches, harder to find but left out and undefended for anyone to discover and destroy.

Kaeyne all but smelled the sudden dark thoughts that tempted his Adetsu. Perhaps they were thoughts of the white dragon he didn't want, of the past lover who would never be present or future, or maybe even the thought of Kaeyne getting mad and threatening him again. Whatever the thoughts, they earned Adetsu a slow stroke of fingers on his lower back, silent, and a sideways glance.
Then, the gold, it caught Adetsu's attention and thus Kaeyne's. The smaller man flicked his hand to his side - a sling and an actual, y-shaped sling shot. Harder to hit something with but easier to handle. Good for flits and their eggs (which were, in fact, quite delicious). Adetsu with his sling, something to smack against the damn gold if she came near, and Kaeyne headed towards what seemed to be a clutch.
As that sharding golden wherrie-of-a-flit screamed something of claws on rock and turned back to defend what he could only assume was her clutch. He hated golds. And greens. Them and their clutches. He wanted to eat every last one of them, if only for the satisfaction of eating the thing that was trying to claw his face.
"Shoot at the sharding thing before I rip out her pretty yellow throat, 'Tsu." he said, all snark and no amusement for the by then on defense gold firelizard.

Adetsu didn't need to be told twice, and the sand near the cliffs was littered with plenty of smooth, gray rocks. Rocks perfect to load into a sling and then lob at a certain circling golden firelizard. Picking one up, he loaded the sling with a practiced motion and sent the stone whirling toward the firelizard.
And, missed. Of course he did. Firelizards were difficult to kill, flashing between any time a threat materialized. Still, if they couldn't be killed with ease, they could be distracted. And the gold certainly had her attention on Adetsu now. Her eyes whirled red and she dove down, claws out, shrieking. Well aware that he was completely unprotected from the waist up, Adetsu stepped backward, loading another rock and sending it toward the firelizard.
Who was, quite suddenly, behind him. He ducked, but the gold got in a long shallow scratch up his back.
If he were someone else he would have sworn. Adetsu hissed, a long, sharp sound. Loading, the next rock, he looked to Kaeyne. He didn't bother to tell his partner to be quick about it. Kaeyne would know. What he did say was, "Keep a few."
They'd have a meal, after.

The gold firelizard distracted entirely by ripping holes into his partner, Kaeyne wasted no time in hopping his way over to where he assumed the clutch to be. She'd risen up near there, her hissing and spitting little self. And - there - hidden, almost, not quite, but enough for him to see the clutch of them.
Oh look. A gold egg. He assumed, at any rate, it was easily near to double the size of other eggs and disappeared easily into the mans side pouch along with a few of the smaller eggs, enough for a meal at any rate. The rest?
Stone fodder.
Much more satisfying to use ones shoe (he had, as a child, before he'd attempted to grow up enough to be something almost impressive in the eyes of someone else) but he'd instead made use of those stones to slam down on the brittle-hard shells of the golds clutch. His lips peeled back when they squished under foot his boot pressed hard against the rocks in question, but not too long.
" 'Tsu." He said, once, and started away from the ruined nest. Kaeyne ducked away, head whipping to stare at his harassed lover. He was done. Over. Now - the escape.

Unlike his partner, Adetsu wasn't particularly angry at the firelizard who had left him a new scar on his back. She was just doing what she had to do. Of course, he wasn't sympathetic or guilty, either. He was just doing what he had to do. It was what everyone did, and Adetsu wasn't the sort to get riled up over it. Oh, he's still hurt someone if what they did interfered with what he did. But he'd do it without malice.
He tossed another stone at the gold as Kaeyne called his name. This one made an impact, though only on the firelizard's tail. She screamed.
And Adetsu, Adetsu ran. Not out of fear, but because the job was done and there was no point antagonizing her, or getting injured for no reason. Generally, even gold didn't chase all that long before returning to their (ruined) clutches. So Adetsu bolted. He didn't wait for Kaeyne, he didn't even look behind him, he just ran down to the shoreline and followed the water until the sound of the gold faded.
Then he stopped, breathing harder than he had been, but not heavily.

Kaeyne moved when Adetsu threw that last stone, a swift gray arc towards the gold. She shrieked and he sprinted after his mate as quickly as his feet would carry him. Several strands of hair freed themselves in the endeavor, leaving him flushed and mussed although he didn't feel that tightness that came with being out of breath. He didn't slow as he neared Adetsu but, rather, ran right towards him at full speed.
One thick arm flung out, grabbed Adetsu nearest to the shoulders as Kaeyne could reach without hitting that brand new cut. His fingers curled tight against arm muscle.
Kaeyne stumbled against him with that grab and laughed, an open mouthed and audile thing. Kaeyne, despite all thoughts otherwise, was not a sociopath - he laughed for the wind and the running, for salt-sticky air and the burn of muscles in the legs he had not stretched that morning. Kaeyne laughed for the warm body under his arm and for the meal in his bag. Most of all, because he wanted to.
Touching and Hatching aside, out of his mind, Kaeyne could laugh.
"You are hurt," he said, once they slowed, ever observant. He'd come prepared, bandage and clean water for wounds they nearly always received from the angry golds. "It is very dashing. Come."
He tugged that arm, eyes forward to a more secluded bit of beach. Dashing or no, blood always rang of misfortune. Kaeyne did not think of how Adetsu would bleed in Impressing a white. It made his skin crawl.
