Now of gods/goddesses I heard of pertaining to Japan, I am unsure of exactly where they come from, whether Buddhism, Shintoism, or wherever, but I have heard of a select few... Ebisu-sama = God of Wealth Amaterasu-sama = Goddess of the Sun Susa-no-o'o-sama = God of War (I think sweatdrop ) Ashura-sama (not sure if this one has ANYTHING to do with Japan) thats all I can think of at the moment... sweatdrop (for some reason I can only think of more DEMONS off-hand than gods, wonder why twisted ) Any more takers??? mrgreen

A few off the top of my head. ^__^ I'll try and find a site for you later. Also, Ebisu is more like, the god of wealth pertaining to the sea, and is the patron of fishermen.
Tenjin - God of Wisdom Aizen-Myoo - God of Love Benten - Goddess of Love Owatatsumi - God of the Sea Hotei - God of Happiness Emma-o - The Buddhist Hades Gama - God of Longevity Miyazu-Hime - Goddess of Royalty Hachiman - God of War Amatsu Mikaboshi - God of Evil Kishijoten - Goddess of Luck/Beauty Gekka-o - God of Marriage Ko-no-Hana - The Blossom Princess (Goddess of Spring) Tatsuta-hime - Goddess of Autumn Yuki-Onna - Snow Woman (Goddess of Winter)

I always thought that Yuki-Onna was an apparition... I thought to put Enma down but I was confused with whether it was a god or a place... ninja

Some of the gods you have listed are variants of Bodhisattvas that came to Japan after the introduction of Buddhism through Korea. For a slightly better understanding (and list) of kami of Japan, try reading through the Kojiki. Despite being a work recorded as a reaction to the cultural difficulties arising through the tension between Buddhism, etc. it's the only written work that preserves some of the mythology of the era.
There are some long lists of names as well pertaining to the genealogy of the greater gods etc.
On a side note, Susa no wo no mikoto (haya sosa no wo no mikoto, etc.) was the main kami of the Izumo people who were eclipsed by those in Yamato--- makes the interpretation of the events pertaining to the interaction between Amaterasu no oomikami (yamato's main kami) and Susa no wo no mikoto a little more telling of the politics of the time.

Yes, some are Buddhist and/or Shinto. Emma-o and Gekka-o are Buddhist. =] As for Yuki-Onna, I think she was worshipped along with Kami-kaze in some rural towns where the winters were extremely harsh.

Was the title Onmyoji? If so, you saw one of many variants created in the modern day about Abe no Seimei ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abe_no_Seimei ). It's an interesting article. I wish I could tell you something more substantial. Maybe we'll have more insight into the man when my friend finishes his thesis relating to medieval setsuwa about Abe no Seimei. ^^:

I've read lots of stories about Seimei, one was about Seimei saving a noble from certain death because some bad Taoist was hired to use his shikijin (supernatural servant) to kill the noble. Which lead to the Taoist's death.

Hey man, you're so into demons and the Japanese occult/mysticism that I just remembered a series of movies to suggest to you!
I believe the title may be Onmyoji (the movies are out in America on DVD/video but I am not sure if they have an english title) and it's based on a popular manga about a Heian-era exorcist and his adventures with demons!
The effects aren't up on American standards but it was entertaining and fun to watch. I think there are 2 movies so far..
