Applicator no, never (I think I accidentally dropped it once and it just floats anyway), but tampon...I've been flushing them since I started wearing them nearly 10 years ago and never had a problem.
I think it'd be ******** nasty to leave them in the garbage...seems like they would start to smell after a bit. gonk

flush em'. i learned its better to do that and risk having to use the plunger than have your dog attack the bathroom trash and drag the bloody tampons all the way across the house. it was embarrassing. redface

My Dad's a plumber. He says just don't flush them. Ever.
Also, sometimes when he unplugs a toilet and finds it was a tampon, the ONLY WOMAN in the house will say "It wasn't me!".

This is all pretty interesting, and I guess it varies a lot.
I always put them in the trash, and as long as they're not completely uncovered and you take the trash out regularly, they don't really smell. I don't know, I'd be afraid of flushing them in any of the places I go. D;
